At the village of Malga Fossetta I caught the shuttle (summer only, €2) up to Arte Sella, the open-air sculpture park in the chestnut forest above Sesto. Entry is €10 (cash or card, 2026), and the path loops 2 km through works like “Cathedra” (a 20-ton larch throne) and “Il Sentiero dei Giganti” where branches are bent into arches. I spent 90 minutes; in rain the clay path is slick, in October the chestnut leaves on the sculptures are better than the art. Mistake: I tried to walk up from Borgo Valsugana on foot—it’s 8 km and 700 m climb on a road with no shoulder; shuttle or car only. Another mistake: doing Arte Sella at 4 pm in November—closes at 17:00, and the forest goes dark by 16:30. Worth it? Passo Pordoi was another place that surprised me much more than I expected. We drove straight to the Sass Pordoi cable car station, and there is a paid parking area just across from the station, which makes it very convenient if you are coming by car. I remember paying only a few euros because we stayed for a few hours. The cable car itself was already part of the experience. It is a large cabin, not a small gondola, and it can carry many people at once. The ride only takes around four minutes, but you gain altitude very quickly, from Passo Pordoi at about 2,239 metres to Sass Pordoi at almost 3,000 metres. The round-trip ticket was around €32 per adult, and during the ride you really feel how high you are going. The day we went, the sky looked quite clear from below, so I honestly thought we had chosen the perfect time. But once we reached the top, it felt like a completely different world. Because the mountain is so high, we were actually inside the clouds. We couldn’t see the full 360-degree panorama I had hoped for, but I still felt the trip was absolutely worth it. What made the experience special was watching the clouds move so quickly around us. One minute everything was covered in white, and a few moments later parts of the mountains suddenly appeared again. The atmosphere kept changing all the time, and it felt dramatic, quiet, and almost unreal, like we had stepped into another world above the Dolomites. At the top there is also Rifugio Maria, where you can stop for food, drinks, or simply sit and wait for the clouds to open. Even without the perfect clear view, I still loved the whole experience. In the heart of the Dolomites lies a half-day magical town experience. On the third day of our in-depth Italy tour last summer, we arrived at the Dolomites and stayed in Canazei for about half a day. Although the time was short, the gems of the Fassa Valley left a deep impression on the entire team. From the town, we walked towards the cable car up to Sass Pordoi at an altitude of 2,950 meters.
