On the high plateau of Ethiopia, the capital Addis Ababa sits at over 2,300 meters above sea level, where crisp air, strong sunlight, and cool breezes define the rhythm of daily life. The city’s spiritual and historical core is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the most important Ethiopian Orthodox churches in the country. Built during the modern imperial era, it also serves as a symbolic resting place for key national figures, blending religious devotion with modern state history. Ethiopia itself holds a unique position in African history. It is widely recognized as one of the oldest continuously existing Christian civilizations in the world, with traditions tracing back to the ancient Kingdom of Aksum. Ethiopian Orthodox belief connects its royal lineage to Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, forming a powerful narrative of sacred kingship that has shaped national identity for centuries. Unlike many regions of Africa, Ethiopia maintained a degree of political continuity and resisted full colonial occupation during the late 19th century. The conflict with Italy — including the Ethiopian victory at the Battle of Adwa in 1896 — became a defining moment in anti-colonial history. Later occupation during the 20th century was reversed after World War II, restoring national sovereignty. Beyond political history, Addis Ababa is also a cultural and academic center. Institutions such as Addis Ababa University and the National Museum of Ethiopia preserve both contemporary scholarship and deep prehistory. The museum’s most famous exhibit is “Lucy,” one of the earliest known hominin skeletons, offering a direct link to human evolutionary history. Yet perhaps the most immediate impression of the city is sensory rather than historical. The air carries the aroma of Ethiopian coffee — a product deeply embedded in both agriculture and social ritual, with Ethiopia widely regarded as the birthplace of coffee culture. I was part of a group of 18 traveling around Ethiopia for 16 days with Landscape Ethiopia Tours, and it was far more varied than I anticipated. We began in Addis Ababa, exploring key sights, local markets, and delving into Ethiopian history and culture, while enjoying our first taste of the city. From there, the journey turned into a true adventure. We experienced many sides of the country—Bahir Dar and the Blue Nile Gorge were stunning, and the scenery around the Jemma River Valley was breathtaking. The ever-changing landscapes made us stop often for photos. Wenchi Crater Lake stood out for its green, peaceful surroundings nestled in mountains—it was uniquely serene after so much variety. The Omo Valley was among the most fascinating parts of the trip. Connecting with local communities and learning about their traditions offered a deeper, more meaningful experience than simply seeing tourist attractions. We then visited historical gems like Gondar, Axum, and Lalibela. Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, seen before only in photos, were awe-inspiring in person. Lastly, the Danakil Depression felt otherworldly. Though the heat was extreme, the unforgettable landscapes made it worthwhile. Managing 18 travelers could have been challenging, but the guides and drivers handled everything brilliantly. They were organized, patient, and allowed us enough time at each stop without feeling rushed. Everyday moments were just as impactful—enjoying Ethiopian cuisine, coffee ceremonies, markets, villages, and chats with locals. Sixteen days seemed long at first, but the trip flew by due to Ethiopia’s immense diversity, making each day feel fresh and unique. I returned home with countless photos, wonderful stories, and an entirely new perspective on Ethiopia. This is a trip I’ll treasure forever.

In Senafe a guide from the National Museum office met me (Nfk 2,000/day, plus Nfk 200 site permit issued in Asmara beforehand—arrange at the National Museum on Harnet Ave before leaving the capital). The 20 km to Qohaito is a rough plateau road; I hitched on a UN vehicle (allowed, they often take travellers) and walked the last 3 km ridge from the lower village up to the pillars. Qohaito spreads over 2.5×15 km of prehistoric/Aksumite rubble: standing columns, a rock-cut tomb, traces of a temple grid, and the cliff edge overlooking the Gash–Barka plain 1,000 m below. No fences, no tickets at the gate, just Ibrahim the local guide and his donkey. Wind is constant at 2,400 m; I wore a fleece in March and still chilled at dusk. Carry 2 L water—Senafe sold me two bottles at Nfk 50 each, last supply. Best light 7–9 am before haze. Mistake: I tried to walk Senafe→Qohaito in one push (20 km); the altitude and lack of shade broke me at 14 km and a tractor rescued me. Sleep in Senafe (Senafe Hotel, Nfk 600), start 5:30 am. Eritrea requires a travel permit for Zoba Debub outside Asmara—your hotel in Asmara handles it in 24h, Nfk 50. Discussion: does Qohaito’s lack of restoration make it superior to excavated sites like Axum, or does the absence of signage leave casual travellers lost?

300 AD 🇪🇹||| Limestone Height: 20.6 meters Aksum (on site) Aksumite Culture The ancient Aksum Kingdom, located 600 kilometers north of Addis Ababa, flourished from the 1st to the 8th century AD and is an important ancient civilization that is little known. It is located along the Red Sea, with advanced technology and a vibrant trade center. The Aksum Kingdom also had its own coinage, which is very special in Africa. The most important cultural heritage of the Aksum civilization should be the more than 200 steles they built between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. There are both unprocessed natural slabs and man-made large steles. This stele in this work weighs about 160 tons and is one of a group of seven steles. It is also the tallest stele still standing on the site today. The group of steles is considered to be a landmark of the Aksumite noble cemetery. The details on this stele may reflect some real features of Aksumite architecture at that time.
