Changbaishan is one of China's premier ski destinations, offering world-class skiing experiences amidst breathtaking natural surroundings. During our recent trip to Changbaishan, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency, which offered an excellent base for our skiing adventure. Located at the foot of the Changbai Mountains, the Hyatt Regency boasts a prime location in the heart of Changbaishan International Resort. The hotel features luxurious accommodations, with spacious rooms and suites offering stunning views of the mountains. The hotel's facilities are top-notch, including a spa, fitness center, and several excellent dining options. Of course, the main attraction during our trip was the skiing, and Changbaishan did not disappoint. The resort boasts over 43 kilometers of ski runs, with something for skiers of all levels, from beginners to experts. The snow quality was excellent, and we were able to enjoy the slopes in relative peace, as the resort is still somewhat undiscovered by international tourists. One of the highlights of our trip was skiing down the Changbai Grand Canyon, a breathtaking run that took us through a narrow canyon flanked by towering cliffs. Another highlight was the chance to ski on Changbai Mountain itself, one of the most majestic peaks in China. Overall, our ski trip to Changbaishan was an unforgettable experience, and the Hyatt Regency provided the perfect base for our adventure. It’s almost winter time so it’s time to plan your ski trip! 🤩 If you’re planning to go to Changbai mountain, then Sheraton can be your consideration. It is one of the more affordable option with decent facilities and not far from the ski resort itself. Room was good, all ski resort tickets are included (except clothes rental) and they have big gym, too, that is bigger than The Westin’s. The only drawback is that you’d need to walk outside to go to the swimming pool which is located inside The Westin building, and that it is one of the father away hotel location from the Hannasan hotspring resort (Hyatt is the nearest). Tips: Check the weather forecast before you go. It would probably nicer to have bright and sunny days during your stay. Address: HYATT REGENCY CHANGBAISHAN Atmosphere/Facilities: Calm interior and many facilities and programs to enjoy Key Points: Average price per person: USD 200 Rating: 3.8 I requested airport pickup when making the reservation, and was told to wait for a staff member holding a card with the hotel name on it when I arrived at the airport on the day. I couldn't see the hotel name (there were other hotels) I thought the staff went to the bathroom for a while, so I kept waiting but they didn't come I called the hotel and they told me to go to the parking lot and look for a bus... Only taxi drivers were honking and the buses had all left I called the hotel again and they told me to wait while they talked to the staff 15 minutes later they called and said the bus had already left so they would send another staff member... There was no sign that said Hyatt Regency Changbaishan in the first place and the pick-up bus wasn't even a Hyatt-only vehicle. The first stop was at the COVID-19 testing station, which costs 10 yuan. 🧳Attractions - Indoor and outdoor Hotsprings🧖🏻‍♀️ are included in the package and there is a 🚌 that makes rounds around the resort. There are multiple skiing and snowboarding slopes grouped according to proficiency levels. 🏨Hotels - The resort has several hotels to choose from. Hotels in town are affordable, with standard rooms around 200 yuan, offering great value. 05 Hechi | Guangxi Hechi’s mountains and waters are for slow travel, not rushing to check off sights. Xiangbei Paradise requires a bamboo raft ride into the village, surrounded by mountains and water. Kids get excited watching water buffalo cross the river. 📍 The bamboo raft dock is at the village entrance. The round trip takes about 40 minutes. The boatman is steady, suitable for elders and kids. The riverbank at Sanliyangdu is gentle, shallow, and clear. In summer afternoons, kids can wade and catch snails, more natural than any water park. ⏰ After 4 PM, the sun shifts west, and the water temperature is just right, no risk of sunburn. ⚠️ The current looks slow but rises after rain. Check the weather forecast before going. Avoid entering the mountains on rainy days. Donglan’s karst peaks are undeveloped and perfect for self-driving tours. There are scenic spots along the road. Stop for photos but no need to climb. 🍜 Hechi’s roasted fragrant pork is a specialty. The skin is crispy, and the meat is tender. Kids love it, but choose cuts with less fat. Stay in county guesthouses, which cost just over 100 yuan per night and are clean. 06 Changsha | Hunan Changsha is hot in summer, but with many indoor exhibits, it’s still possible to beat the heat with kids. In hot weather, kids tire quickly in the sun. 08 Baishan | Jilin Changbai Mountain is the ultimate summer cooler. The highest temperature on the mountain is around 20 degrees Celsius, so bring a light down jacket. 📍 The North Slope is the classic route. Take the eco-bus from the gate to the foot of Tianchi Lake, then climb a short set of steps to see the lake. ⏰ Whether you see the whole lake depends on luck. The best chance is before 9 AM when the fog clears quickly. Hiking the North Slope with kids isn’t tiring. The eco-bus reaches most spots. These 8️⃣ underrated cities have beautiful scenery and fewer people. If you’ve been to 3, you’re impressive 01 Tangshan | Hebei The Qing East Tombs are often underestimated. Most people head straight to Empress Dowager Cixi’s underground palace, but I find the tranquility of Emperor Kangxi’s Jingling Tomb even more rare. ⏰ Arrive before 9 AM. Visitors haven’t flooded in yet, and you can hear the wind passing through the stone archway. The underground palace is cool, so bring a light jacket in summer. Nanhu and Kailuan have a completely different vibe. This park, transformed from an old mining area, has a wide lake surface perfect for an evening stroll. It’s about a 40-minute taxi ride from Qing East Tombs back to the city. You can catch the sunset at Nanhu on the way. Honestly, dining in Tangshan city is affordable. You can buy a big bag of chess piece sesame flatbreads for 10 yuan and snack on them while walking. 02 Tianshui | Gansu The plank road at Maijishan Grottoes is so narrow it only fits one person. If you’re afraid of heights, stay closer to the inside. 🚄 It’s about a 40-minute taxi ride from Tianshui South Station to the scenic area. Carpooling is more cost-effective. Wushan’s Water Curtain Cave is far from the city, but the cliff carvings at Lashao Temple are worth a special trip. The Buddha statues are half embedded in the mountain and half exposed, with textures weathered by wind and rain. Fuxi Temple is in the city and best visited in the afternoon. Afterward, you can stroll right into Fuxi City pedestrian street and try a bowl of Tianshui guagua noodles. The spicy, numbing flavor hits your nose, and it’s best enjoyed with apricot tea. ⚠️ Maijishan has many stairs. If elderly visitors have knee issues, it’s recommended to only walk the lower plank road. 03 Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang In June, the Ili Valley is as green as freshly painted. The three-dimensional grasslands of Kalajun look unreal from above, with layers of curves stacked like waves. Tulugen Apricot Blossom Valley only opens briefly in April. The bloom period is short, so if you miss it, you’ll have to wait until next year. Gongnaisi Grassland is wilder, with fewer human traces, perfect for slow horseback riding. 🍜 The yogurt curds at herders’ homes are so sour they make you frown, but paired with a pot of milk tea, they become more flavorful the more you chew. If you only visit one place, I recommend Kalajun. ⚠️ The grasslands have big temperature swings. Wear short sleeves during the day, but put on a fleece as soon as the sun sets. 04 Xuancheng | Anhui Chaji Ancient Village is much quieter than Hongcun. With the same Hui-style architecture, the alleys here are narrower and more full of life. In the evening, you can see elders washing vegetables by the creek. The Hu family ancestral hall in Jixi Longchuan has wood carvings so intricate you can’t look away. ⏰ It’s best to stay overnight in Chaji. At 6 AM, the morning mist hasn’t lifted yet, and the shadows of horse-head walls are faint—that’s the real ancient village experience. 🚄 Huangshan North Station is closer to the village than Xuancheng city center, so don’t take a detour. The village’s farmhouse dishes are generous. One serving of stinky mandarin fish with two vegetable dishes is more than enough for two people. 05 Baishan | Jilin The Tianchi Lake at Changbai Mountain isn’t always visible. The west slope requires climbing 1,442 steps, which is exhausting, but the view is the most expansive. ⏰ Start hiking right when the scenic area opens at 7 AM. The clouds and mist haven’t gathered yet, so your chances of seeing the lake are highest. ⚠️ It’s windy at the summit. Even in July, wear a windbreaker. Renting a cotton jacket isn’t necessary; just bring a thick jacket. In Erdaobaihe town below, there’s a Korean small eatery with cold noodles in a sweet, sour, and icy broth. After the climb, a bowl will revive you. 06 Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan Menghuan Great Golden Pagoda is in Mangshi city. Evening is the best time to visit when the sunset turns the pagoda golden, completely different from daytime. ⚠️ You must take off your shoes to enter the pagoda, so sandals are most convenient. Right below is the Silver Pagoda. Visiting both takes about an hour. 🍜 Nearby Dai snack stalls sell puluda, sweet but not greasy, paired with a bowl of sour and spicy rice noodles. You can have a meal for 10 yuan. Mangshi has few people and a slow pace, perfect for a two-night stay to relax. 🚄 It’s about a two-hour car ride from Tengchong. The road conditions are average, so bring motion sickness medicine if needed. 07 Kaifeng | Henan Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is heavily commercialized, but the evening performance of “Dream of the Eastern Capital” is worth the ticket. Sitting by the lake watching the lights come on, you can feel the prosperity of Northern Song’s Bianjing. Iron Pagoda Park is where locals often go. The iron-colored glazed brick pagoda has stood for a thousand years. It’s best to visit at dusk when the slanting light highlights its contours beautifully. Daxiangguo Temple and Bao Gong Temple are close by, about a 10-minute walk. ⚠️ Bao Gong Temple is closed Monday mornings, so don’t make a wasted trip. Kaifeng snacks are concentrated at Xisi Night Market. Soup dumplings with braised fish are a must. Two people can eat until full for 50 yuan. 08 Baoting County | Hainan You can only choose one between Betel Nut Valley and Yanoda. Betel Nut Valley showcases Li and Miao cultures, with Li grandmas weaving brocade live. Their craftsmanship is exquisite, but the scenic area has many traps. Don’t buy from the silverware shop the guides take you to. Yanoda is a tropical rainforest. Walking the plank road, the air is humid, and above you are strangler figs and epiphytic ferns. It’s great for kids to learn about plants. ⏰ Visit Betel Nut Valley in the morning when there are many performances. By afternoon, only a few visitors remain. 🍜 The coconut rice at the scenic entrance mixes glutinous rice with coconut aroma. It costs 10 yuan per serving, half the price of inside. Baoting is close to Sanya but much cheaper for lodging. The money saved can cover two seafood meals. Among these eight places, my personal favorites are Maijishan in Tianshui and Kalajun in Ili. Before the crowds arrive, you can hear the wind passing through the stone corridors. 📍 It’s best to enter from the east gate, see caves 1–4 first, then slowly walk west to avoid the main tour groups. I recommend visiting the Hanging Temple after 4 PM when the lines are shorter. Standing on the plank road and looking down, the breeze from the Hunyuan River Valley refreshes you. If you’re short on time at Mount Hengshan (North Peak), you can skip the summit. Walk the half-hour trail outside the mountain gate through pine forests, which is much cooler than inside the scenic area. 🍜 For lunch in Hunyuan County, try a bowl of Xiaoxifu cold noodles with a sour and spicy flavor, paired with fried oil cakes. It costs less than 20 per person. 02 Yangjiang | Guangdong Dajiao Bay on Hailing Island is not worth visiting during the day—you’ll get sunburned and regret it. ⏰ Buy a night ticket after 5:30 PM. The sea turns golden orange under the sunset, and the waves are still warm as they lap your ankles. The Water Silk Road tourist area’s beach is divided into two parts: the east side has more rocks, great for photos; the west side has fine sand, perfect for wading. ⚠️ Don’t rent swim rings at the scenic area entrance—they’re expensive. Buy one at a town convenience store for only 15 yuan. At night, head toward Zha Po Town outside the scenic area for a street full of seafood stalls. Seafood is sold by weight, so ask about processing fees first. Last time I ordered flower crab and mantis shrimp, including processing fees it was 120 yuan, enough for two people to eat until full. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Yangjiang Station. Carpooling is more cost-effective. 03 Dongying | Shandong The Yellow River Estuary Ecotourism Area is perfect in September. The reeds start turning white, and the wind makes them ripple like waves. 📍 The core of the scenic area is the distant viewing tower. From the top, you can see the yellow-blue dividing line where the Yellow River meets the sea, but only if the weather is clear. Nothing is visible on rainy days. There are electric carts inside the area—don’t skip this expense. Walking between stops is exhausting because the distances are long. ⚠️ After 2 PM, the wind picks up and drones are not allowed to fly. If you want aerial shots, go in the morning. 🦀 On the way out toward Kenli, roadside small restaurants sell Yellow River hairy crabs weighing about 4 ounces each for only 30 yuan. They’re full of roe and meat, half the price of city crab. 04 Baishan | Jilin Late August to early September is the most reliable window for Changbai Mountain. Whether you see the Heavenly Lake depends on luck, but the chance of clear skies is higher than in July or August. 📍 The west slope requires climbing over 1,400 steps. If you take breaks, you can reach the top in 40 minutes. The view is wider than the north slope, and there are fewer people. The north slope has shuttle buses that go directly to the lake, which is easier for seniors and kids. The autumn colors are already showing in Erdaobaihe Town at the foot of the mountain. The birch leaves are turning yellow. Rent a bike and ride around Meiren Pine Road—the air is cool. 🍜 In town, try Korean cold noodles with Guobao pork. The cold noodle soup has ice chips and a sour-spicy flavor that cuts through the richness. ⚠️ It’s windy on the mountain, short sleeves at the base, but you must bring a fleece jacket at the summit. Don’t tough it out. 05 Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan In September at Puzhehei, the lotus flowers haven’t fully wilted, but the seed pods are ready to pick. 📍 The top of Qinglong Mountain offers panoramic views. It’s a 400-step climb that takes about 20 minutes. Karst peaks surround the water like a plate of green snails. If you don’t want to climb, rent a willow-leaf boat. The boatman will row into the reed marshes, and water birds will fly up beside you. 🍜 Village stalls sell freshly grilled lotus fish for 10 yuan each, with a crispy skin. ⚠️ Don’t buy silver jewelry at the scenic area entrance—it’s overpriced. For authentic silver, go to the silver shops in Xianren Cave Village, where you can watch the craftsmen work. 🚄 It’s about a 20-minute taxi ride from Puzhehei High-Speed Rail Station. Ride-hailing apps are cheaper than taxis. 06 Longnan | Gansu I strongly recommend seeing Tianchi Lake before Guan’egou. Tianchi is a high mountain dam lake with water so green it looks blue. The lakeside boardwalk takes two hours to circle with almost no incline, so seniors can easily walk it. Guan’egou is most colorful in September, with leaves layering in light yellow, orange-red, and deep green. 📍 There is a sightseeing bus from the valley entrance to the waterfall group, but the last 2 kilometers must be hiked. The creek water is icy cold, splashing as you step on the stones. 🍜 In the county seat, try Yangyu Jiaotuan, a sticky potato dish drizzled with chili oil that’s so fragrant you’ll want to lick the bowl. ⚠️ Longnan is rainy. Bring a waterproof jacket because it can rain suddenly in the mountains. 07 Taizhou | Zhejiang Tiantai Mountain and Shenxianju are perfect in September to avoid the late summer heat. The Shiliang Waterfall on Tiantai Mountain is hidden in a valley. When you reach the waterfall, the mist feels like air conditioning. 📍 Guoqing Temple has no admission fee. The rice fields in front of the temple start turning yellow at the end of September. The Sui Dynasty pagoda stands in the dusk, creating a great atmosphere. Shenxianju’s Ruyi Bridge is very photogenic, but it gets crowded quickly. ⏰ Arrive right at 8 AM when it opens to avoid lines. The cable car has no queue, and you can take photos freely on the bridge. I like to visit Ziyang Street in Taizhou’s old city at dusk. The bluestone pavement heats up under the sunset, and freshly baked seaweed cakes crumble with every bite. ⚠️ If you’re afraid of heights, don’t force yourself to walk on Shenxianju’s glass plank road. There is a mountain path nearby to bypass it. 08 Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang The Diaoshuilou Waterfall at Jingpo Lake has a large water flow in August and clearer water in September. 📍 The waterfall diving show is held daily at 10 AM and 2 PM. Arrive 20 minutes early to get a front-row spot—you might get splashed. I recommend taking the boat tour halfway. The full trip is two hours, and the scenery repeats in the second half. From the waterfall, walk 20 minutes north to a volcanic crater underground forest. The boardwalk winds through the primeval forest, where the air is cool and moist—a natural oxygen bar. 🍜 In Mudanjiang city, try Korean soybean paste soup with rice. The soup has tofu and braised pork belly cooked until tender. You can eat two bowls of rice soaked in the soup. 🚄 It takes about 1.5 hours by high-speed train from Harbin. A same-day round trip is tight; staying overnight is more relaxed. Each of these eight places has its own character in August, September, and October. The black volcanic rocks against the blue sea make for great shots, but it’s very sunny, so apply sunscreen generously. 📍 It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Zhangzhou city center. The roads are good, but the section entering the park can get congested on holidays, so leave early. 02 Ma’anshan | Anhui Caishiji is more enjoyable than I expected. Don’t just check in at Taibai Tower and leave. Walk further along the riverside boardwalk—that’s the highlight. The river flows beneath your feet, cliffs tower above, and when it’s windy, the sound of waves hitting the rocks is very atmospheric. ⏰ Morning visits are best—fewer people and mist still lingers over the river, giving a watercolor painting vibe. The whole walk takes about 2–3 hours with many steps, so elderly people with knee issues should be cautious. 🍜 After descending, head straight to the old noodle shop in Caishi town. Dry tofu noodles with a side of marinated dried tofu cost about 12–13 yuan and are very satisfying. ⚠️ Drinks are expensive inside the park, so bring your own water. The riverbank by the town offers free spots with the best light around 6 PM. 03 Changde | Hunan I thought Taohuayuan was purely artificial before visiting, but it exceeded expectations. The core area is small but rich in detail. Old houses in Qin Valley, rice fields, waterwheels, and misty green mountains around really create a hidden paradise feel. ⏰ Enter before 10 AM for clear light and fewer tourists, so you won’t have to dodge people in photos. 🚄 It’s about an hour by taxi from Changde station, costing around 150–160 yuan round trip.
