2026 Bakio Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

There are probably few people like me who haven’t watched Game of Thrones, and even fewer who haven’t watched it but still go to Gaztelugatxe No ticket is required to enter the island itself, but a reservation is needed. Since I hadn’t planned to go before, I checked the official website on a whim and found no available slots. However, the guide said you can enter without a reservation after 7:00 PM, so I decided to try my luck I arrived at 7:30 PM. The parking lot is very large, so you can imagine how many visitors there must be during the day. The signs are very clear. Not far from the parking lot, you can see the gate in photo 2. Just go straight in. There are signs inside. One path leads to the viewing platform for a panoramic view, photo 4, and the other leads to the island. The path itself is easy to walk. My four-year-old daughter walked the entire way by herself, but some parts have loose gravel, so it’s best to wear sneakers. Flip-flops or similar shoes won’t work and will definitely be slippery Putting Game of Thrones aside, the island itself is very beautiful and unique. Climbing the winding, dragon-like path to the mountaintop chapel, combined with the ever-changing weather, the strong wind that almost blew me away, and the occasional lightning over the sea, was amazing! If the weather is clear, I’m sure it will be a different kind of beauty! When we left after 9:00 PM, there were still people going in. You hike up this insanely scenic stone bridge that twists and climbs like a dragon’s tail toward this tiny chapel perched dramatically on a rocky islet. The stairs? All 241 of them. My legs were crying but in the best way possible. The ocean was wild and moody the day I went, waves crashing below like nature’s soundtrack. It felt super mystical. Once at the top, I rang the bell three times like they say, it’s supposed to bring good luck. Even if it doesn’t, the view alone is worth the climb. Definitely wear good shoes, bring water, and maybe snacks because the path isn’t short. Totally recommend going early or later in the day for fewer people. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a coastal gem that’s 100% worth the effort.

#summervacay When the sun is out, Gaztelugatxe in Spain's northern Basque Country is absolutely stunning! It truly feels like a hidden gem. Entry & Booking: Admission: It's FREE! Getting There & Parking: By Car: We rented a car, and it took us less than 40 minutes to drive there from Bilbao Airport. Parking: Just navigate directly to the parking lot (as seen in the last picture). An attendant at the entrance will collect a parking fee of 3.5 Euros. Dining Options: Right outside the parking lot, you'll find a couple of restaurants: Left-hand side restaurant: This one boasts an incredibly beautiful view, with a vast green lawn and blooming hydrangeas. It's the perfect spot to sit back, relax, and enjoy a coffee. Right-hand side restaurant: This restaurant has a very picturesque glass window, ideal for taking beautiful photos. We actually ate here. The waitstaff didn't speak English, so we just pointed to what other people were eating to order our food. The taste was decent, but the hygiene was just so-so. I went to Bakio from Manila Airport. It's in the mountains, so it wasn't as hot as Manila and was very comfortable. Also, the local people were very kind and I had a very enjoyable time.
