Located by Lake Thun, the St. Beatus Caves are a stunning karst cave formation and a relatively lesser-known attraction. At the foot of the mountain, there's a bus stop where visitors are greeted by the Beatus Museum and a spectacular waterfall cascading down with a thunderous roar, resembling a stampede of wild horses. As you ascend, you'll first encounter a scenic viewpoint offering a panoramic view of Lake Thun's breathtaking beauty. After soaking in the scenery, it's time to head to the caves and purchase tickets for the tour. The St. Beatus Caves extend deep into the mountain for about a kilometer and feature rushing streams and waterfalls illuminated by strategically placed lights, highlighting the unique rock formations. Legend has it that the inspiration for the dragon's lair in "The Lord of the Rings" came from these caves. The caves are named after Saint Beatus, who is said to have lived and meditated here. One of the most surprising features of the St. Beatus Caves is the endpoint, which leads to a cave restaurant. This unique dining spot offers stunning views and an incredible atmosphere. You can choose a seat with a view of the lake, enjoy a cup of coffee, and take a relaxing break.

If you're searching for the ultimate scenic hotel in Canton of Bern, look no further than Beatenberg Resort & Spa in Beatenberg Interlaken. My recent stay has earned it a perfect 5/5 rating for its breathtaking views—the reason it tops the Trip.com "Top 20 Scenic Hotels" list is spot-on! From my room, the unforgettable lake and mountain vistas left me in awe. If you crave that stunning view, be sure to book a room with both lake and mountain views—they are absolutely worth it. The experience was unique and memorable, making me eager to recommend this hotel to friends.✨ Some practical tips for your stay: · Since the hotel sits atop a mountain, phone signal is sometimes lost and the WiFi isn't always strong—plan accordingly! · The bathroom is on the small side, but manageable. · Food prices are surprisingly reasonable compared to Interlaken. · Perfect photo spots everywhere! Don't forget your camera. Hotel ranking reasons are comprehensive and accurate, and my trust in the Trip.com list remains unchanged after this amazing experience. It was 31 December, I was thinking what a better way to end the year? I decided to end the year with a little adventure—paragliding over Interlaken! When I arrived in Interlaken the day before, I was actually a little disappointed. I had imagined a snowy winter wonderland, but the town was surprisingly green. Little did I know that the lack of snow wouldn’t matter at all once we took to the skies! Our meeting and landing point was at Höhematte Park, where a van picked us up along with a few other passengers. We were then driven up towards Beatenberg, where our pilots checked the wind and weather conditions before deciding when and where we could take off. Even after we arrived, there was still a little waiting around. The pilots were constantly checking the conditions, and we eventually walked a little further up the hill to find a better spot with the right wind for take-off. Then came the exciting part—getting ready to fly! We put on our safety gear and the pilots prepared the paraglider. We took turns getting into position. When it was my turn, the instructions were simple: run, keep running, and when we reached the edge, lift my legs and sit back. Sounds easy enough, right? So I ran… and ran… and suddenly, there was no ground underneath me! And off we went! Once we were up in the air, the nerves disappeared surprisingly quickly. My pilot pointed out the sights below and explained the different areas and attractions around Interlaken. With the mountains, lakes and town spread out beneath us, the view was absolutely amazing. And the best part? I wasn’t the one doing the manoeuvring! I could simply sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. It was actually much more peaceful than I expected—and so enjoyable that the flight seemed to be over far too quickly. But just when I thought it was all about relaxing and sightseeing, my pilot asked, “Are you up for a thrill ride?” Woohoo! Of course I said yes! He then added a few fun stunts and turns, turning our peaceful flight into a mini roller coaster in the sky. It was such a fun surprise and definitely gave the experience an extra dose of excitement. As we came back down towards Höhematte Park, my pilot reminded me to keep running when we landed until he told me to stop. The landing was actually much easier than I expected, and within seconds, I was back on the ground! Ending the year high above Interlaken, with a few spins and plenty of excitement, was certainly one way to make 31 December memorable!

📅 Itinerary Day 1: Drive to Mount Pilatus to ride Switzerland's longest summer slide (Fräkigaudi Toboggan Run). Cars cannot drive directly to the slide's starting point. First, drive to the cable car station at the foot of Kriens, park, and then take the panoramic cable car to the Fräkmüntegg station halfway up the mountain to reach the slide. Day 2: Book paragliding online early in the morning. Paragliding meeting point: Höheweg 56 Day 3: Ascend the Jungfraujoch. How to reach the summit: After parking, take the Eiger Express 3S cable car directly from the Terminal to Eigergletscher station, then transfer to the cogwheel train to the Jungfraujoch summit. The entire journey takes only about 45 minutes, making it the fastest and most convenient option. 🏨 Accommodation Recommendation: Dorint Blüemlisalp 🍴 Dining Recommendation: The hotel's Swiss restaurant 📌 Useful Tips: Summer is peak season; it's advisable to book all activities well in advance.

Experiencing tandem paragliding in Interlaken is one of the most popular outdoor activities when visiting the Bernese Oberland. Guided by a professional pilot throughout the entire journey, you need absolutely no flying experience to enjoy breathtaking bird's-eye views of Lake Thun, Lake Brienz, as well as the spectacular scenery of the Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch peaks. Basic Information · Meeting Point: Usually includes hotel pickup in downtown Interlaken, Interlaken Ost/West railway stations, or meeting directly at the Paragliding Interlaken shop / Höhematte. · Typical Flight Route: A dedicated shuttle takes you from downtown Interlaken to the mid-mountain takeoff point at Amisbühl / Beatenberg (approx. 1,350 meters above sea level). With an elevation drop of about 800 meters, you will eventually land safely at the Höhematte in the city center. Key Features & Highlights · Zero Experience Required & Professional Guidance You will be securely harnessed to a certified professional pilot. To take off, you simply run a few steps forward on a grassy slope to smoothly catch the air—no cliff jumping or complicated maneuvers required. · 360-Degree Panoramic Views of "Two Lakes and Three Peaks" Once airborne, you'll glide for about 10 to 20 minutes (depending on the day's wind and thermal conditions), soaking in the spectacular vistas of the Tiffany-blue Lake Brienz, the deep-blue Lake Thun, and the iconic alpine peaks. · Optional Acrobatics If you're a thrill-seeker, you can ask your pilot during the flight to perform aerial acrobatics like steep spirals or rapid dives. If you prefer a calm, scenic ride, the pilot will maintain a smooth, gentle glide. · In-Flight Media Services (Photos & Videos) Your pilot will use a GoPro to capture videos and photos of your entire flight. After landing, you can preview the media on the spot and decide whether to purchase it (usually around 40 CHF, transferred directly to your phone). Practical Tips & Reminders · What to Wear: It gets windy and chilly at high altitudes, so we highly recommend wearing a windproof jacket, long pants, and closed-toe sports or hiking shoes (strictly no flip-flops or sandals). · Weight & Age Restrictions: The general weight limit is typically under 80 kg. Children who meet the minimum weight requirement (usually around 25-30 kg or more) are also welcome to fly. · Year-Round Availability: Paragliding operates in all four seasons (including stunning winter snow flights), but it is highly weather-dependent. Flights may be canceled or rescheduled in the event of heavy rain, thick fog, or strong winds. It is recommended to book your flight for the first few days of your trip to allow for flexible adjustments.

#kindnessontheroad Thun Lake’s turquoise waters looked inviting on a warm July morning, so I rented gear from a dive shop in Spiez and headed to the St. Beatus Caves dive site. Ten minutes into my descent, my mask started fogging—typical rookie mistake. I surfaced, frustrated, only to see a diver in a yellow wetsuit approaching. “Need a hand?” he asked, his voice muffled by his regulator. His name was Lukas, a local dive instructor. He took my mask, rubbed a dab of saliva on the inside (an old trick!), rinsed it with lake water, and handed it back. “Spit works better than commercial defoggers,” he grinned. As we descended together, he pointed out underwater rock formations and schools of whitefish, but also warned about hidden hazards: “Watch for submerged logs—they can snag fins. And avoid the cave’s narrow passages unless you’re certified for cavern diving; tourists get trapped there yearly.” Practical tips for diving/snorkeling in Thun Lake: Rent gear from reputable shops (expect CHF 50-70/~$55-$77 USD for a full set); cheap rentals often have leaky masks. Visibility peaks in early morning (8-10 AM)—afternoons bring boat traffic and stirred-up sediment. Lukas also recommended the Oberhofen Castle dive site for beginners (shallow, with clear views of the castle’s underwater foundations) and cautioned against diving after heavy rain, which washes debris into the lake. After the dive, Lukas invited me for a beer at a lakeside beizli(small restaurant). We talked about Switzerland’s strict diving regulations: All divers must carry a buoy, and night diving requires a permit. “Safety first,” he said, clinking his glass. His kindness turned a frustrating dive into a memorable one. Have you had a fellow traveler save your day? Share your underwater mishaps (and fixes!) below.

Lauterbrunnen Valley is a glacial valley in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, famous for its towering cliffs, numerous waterfalls, and typical Alpine village scenery. This valley is often considered one of Switzerland's most iconic natural landscapes and serves as a vital gateway for hiking, mountaineering, skiing, and traveling to the Jungfrau region. Major Attractions The most representative sights in the valley include the Staubbach Falls, which cascade down a nearly 297-meter vertical cliff, and the Trümmelbach Falls, which flow through multiple cave layers inside the mountain. Surrounded by typical Alpine pastures, wooden chalet clusters, and magnificent peaks, they collectively form a highly recognizable Swiss mountain landscape. Key Surrounding Attractions The following locations together form the most popular tourist routes in the Jungfrau region: Topography and Natural Features The Lauterbrunnen Valley is a quintessential U-shaped glacial valley formed by ancient glacier erosion, with rock walls reaching hundreds of meters in height. The valley is renowned for its roughly 72 waterfalls, many of which originate from high mountain snowmelt and underground water systems, creating distinct water volumes and landscapes across different seasons. Travel Experience The valley itself is an important transport hub for exploring the Jungfrau region, providing access to high-altitude villages like Wengen, Mürren, and Kleine Scheidegg via mountain railways, cable cars, or hiking trails. Summer is ideal for hiking, rock climbing, paragliding, and photography; while winter connects to nearby large ski resorts, offering views of the snow-covered valley and the Alps. Its convenient transportation and dense natural scenery make it one of Switzerland's most popular mountain tourist destinations. July 15 Grindelwald First Half-Day + Head to Montreux Morning: Grindelwald First Cliff Walk If energy permits, you can hike to Bachalpsee Afternoon: Head to the next stop: If Montreux, it takes about 2.5–3 hours. Optimal Priority (Weather dependent) Super Important: Save the sunniest day for: Jungfraujoch Second sunniest day for: Grindelwald First Cloudy day is fine for: Lauterbrunnen Valley July 15 Arrival + Classic Lake Geneva Shore Walk. July 17 Lake View Wrap-up + Head to Zermatt in the morning (Relaxed wrap-up) Morning walk by the lake Sip coffee while watching the Jet d’Eau Take some final city shots Depart in the morning Route: Geneva → Visp → Zermatt takes about 3.5–4 hours July 17 Arrival + Slow Town Tour (Half-day) After check-in, stroll through the Old Town Explore Bahnhofstrasse Check out the traditional wooden chalets Find a nice view restaurant for dinner Snap the Matterhorn at dusk Pro tip: Don't schedule high-altitude activities today, save your energy. July 18 Most Important: Gornergrat Full Scenic Day. Start early: Take the Gornergrat Railway up the mountain Gornergrat Riffelsee Riffelberg Hike This is the most classic day in Zermatt. Recommended time: 6–8 hours. The Gornergrat Railway is a high-altitude cogwheel railway in Switzerland, connecting Zermatt with Gornergrat. It is renowned for its spectacular Alpine views, up-close perspectives of the Matterhorn, and year-round mountain sightseeing experiences, making it one of Switzerland's most iconic mountain railways. Route and Experience Spanning about 9 kilometers, the railway uses **rack railway** technology to conquer steep gradients, climbing from Zermatt at around 1,600 meters above sea level to over 3,000 meters at Gornergrat. Along the way, you can admire forests, alpine meadows, glaciers, and perennially snow-capped peaks. The terminal features an observation deck offering sweeping views of several 4,000-meter peaks and the famous Matterhorn. History and Features Officially opened in 1898, the Gornergrat Railway is one of the world's first fully electrified cog railways. Because general combustion-engine cars are banned in Zermatt, this railway has long been a crucial transport mode for tourists heading to alpine attractions, also symbolizing the development of Swiss mountain railway engineering and sustainable tourism. Four-Season Activities Different seasons bring completely different experiences. Summer is great for hiking, photography, and observing alpine flora; winter links up with ski areas, offering snowy landscapes and glacier views. Dawn and dusk are especially popular with photographers, as clear weather perfectly mirrors the Matterhorn and highlights the vast Alpine scenery. July 19 Glacier World + High-Altitude Cable Car Main goals: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise Ice Palace observation deck snow experience Afternoon: Can connect to Schwarzsee This is the most mind-blowing day, but expect strong winds and low temperatures. July 20 Before flying home: Sunnegga Easy Half-Day. If your flight leaves Zurich Airport at 18:45 on July 20 and you are still in Zermatt the night before, you actually have plenty of time, but it's not recommended to plan high-risk mountain activities that day. 🏘️ This time in Interlaken, I didn’t stay in the town center but in the hillside village of Beatenberg · 🏔 Facing the Jungfrau, on clear days you can see the snowy mountains just by opening the window. It was here that I found a very local hiking trail — Niederhorn · 🗺️ Route ❶ Going up: Taking the cable car is the easiest way up From Beatenberg station halfway up the mountain (the terminus of bus line 101), take the cable car up in two segments: 🔹 Beatenberg → Vorsass 🔹 Vorsass → Niederhorn · The summit is about 1960m above sea level, with a wide-open view where you can see the entire Lake Thun and the mountain range including Jungfrau and Eiger. The summit platform alone is worth spending a long time at · ❷ Hiking: Niederhorn → Vorsass → Beatenberg 🔹 The most recommended section is Niederhorn → Vorsass, which follows a ridge meadow route, mostly a gentle downhill with continuously expansive scenery 🚶 Distance: 3 km ⏳ Duration: 1.5 hours Vorsass has a restaurant with a fantastic view where you can grab a bite and rest. A local couple sharing our table told us that most visitors here are locals, and it’s rare to see East Asian faces like ours · 🔹 There are two options to descend from Vorsass: ① Take the cable car down to Beatenberg ② Continue hiking from Vorsass to Beatenberg, which passes through different vegetation, mostly forest trails 🚶 Distance: 6 km ⏳ Time: 2 hours · 🛷 Hidden Winter Fun In winter, there is a long sledding run. Many locals take the cable car to the summit, rent a sled, and slide all the way down to Vorsass · 💡 Tips 🔹 This route is always on the sunny side of the mountain, so it’s very sunny in both winter and summer. Be sure to wear sunglasses in winter 🔹 In winter, wear shoes with good grip; crampons are also helpful for easier walking 🔹 If you want to take the cable car down from Vorsass, consider buying a 3-zone ticket ·
