Libya Green Mountain: Bayda to Susa Cyrene Ruins Juniper Forest Coastal Path
#arrivalguide Al-Jabal al-Akhdar (“Green Mountain”) is Libya’s Mediterranean escarpment, and I traveled it in October with a hired driver from Benghazi to Bayda (180 km, 3 hr, 50 dinar/L fuel split). From Bayda, a 25 km coastal run south via Susa reaches the Cyrene archaeological zone (entry 10 dinar, cash only—no cards anywhere in Libya). The walk I did was from Susa beach up the juniper-forest track to the Cyrene theatre: 6 km one way, 400 m climb, 2 hr. Juniperus phoenicea grows here in the only real forest in Libya, mixed with oleander and myrtle. The path is Roman-paved in sections—you walk on 2,300-year-old stones. Cyrene’s Greek theatre, agora, and Temple of Zeus are fenced but the forest approach is open. No water on the track; I carried 3 L. Bayda has one functioning ATM (sometimes), so cash in Benghazi beforehand. Mistake: I trusted Google Maps and it routed me through a wadi that floods—ask the Susa guard for the paved farm road instead. Security: post-2011 Libya needs a local fixer; I paid 200 dinar/day for a driver who doubled as buffer. Discussion: with Libya barely on the tourist map, should Cyrene stay underfunded and quiet, or get Petra-style infrastructure?
