Out of my five-day Switzerland itinerary, I spent three days staying in Interlaken. The places I visited were Spiez, Lungern, Brienz, and Rigi. If you stay too close to Grindelwald, getting around can actually feel less flexible. From Interlaken West, you can catch a boat to Spiez; from Interlaken Ost, you can take a train to Lungern or a boat onto Lake Brienz. Everything branches out conveniently from the center. Even Lucerne is only about two hours away. It also lets you get the most out of the Swiss Travel Pass, and when the weather around Jungfrau is bad, it’s the perfect base for switching plans and heading to nearby towns instead. · -- 📅 A flexible 3-day itinerary Day 1 Zermatt → Interlaken Ost Interlaken West → Spiez (boat) Spiez → Interlaken West (train) After arriving and dropping off my luggage, I took a boat to Spiez. It’s a small town, so even with a relaxed walk, two hours is plenty. I saw a wedding taking place at the castle, and I couldn’t help feeling envious of that kind of peaceful, laid-back wedding. · -- Day 2 Interlaken Ost → Lungern Lungern → Brienz Brienz → Interlaken Ost (boat) I headed out early in the morning to see Lungern, since everyone says the weather there is especially beautiful. ❣️ On the train to Lungern, the seats on the right side are the best! At the beginning of the ride from Interlaken, you get views of Lake Brienz, and later on, Lungern’s famous S-shaped curve unfolds before you. From Lungern, I went on to Brienz and had lunch by the lake, then took a boat back to Interlaken around 3 p.m. · -- Day 3 Interlaken Ost → Lucerne → Rigi Kulm Maybe because the snow-capped mountain scenery I had seen earlier was so overwhelming, Mount Rigi didn’t leave as strong an impression on me as I expected. The travel time was fairly long too, and honestly, hiking around the Jungfrau region felt more rewarding overall. · -- ✨ My personal ranking Lungern > Spiez > Brienz > Rigi I fell for Lungern at first sight, Spiez stood out for its relaxed atmosphere, and Brienz was lovely for the quiet calm of the lakeside. · -- The real magic of traveling in Switzerland is how one base in Interlaken lets you enjoy so many towns with so much flexibility. Even when the weather shifts, your route doesn’t have to. It was easily one of the best decisions I made on this trip 🌿

You’ll need to climb a flight of stairs from the town, so make sure to get there before sunset to catch that fleeting blue hour (the blue lighting only lasts a moment, so be quick if you want the perfect shot!). Viewpoint location: Matterhorn Viewpoint—just head straight east along Bahnhofstrasse until you reach the foot of the mountain. 🐑 Black-Nose Sheep Encounter: According to travel guides, you can spot the famous black-nose sheep near the Denner Partner supermarket. It's only about a 5-minute walk from the Zermatt train station. Just stroll along the hillside next to the supermarket; the best time to catch the shepherd herding them home is usually around the 4 or 5 PM rush hour.
