Mixed Feelings About a Familiar Resort
Honestly, after my glowing review of a January 2025 trip stayed as the hotel’s "favorite review" for over a year and a half, it feels awkward to write anything less than praise. But I'll gather my thoughts and share them nonetheless ;) This was my third visit to JA. The hotel has changed. It’s still good, yet there are some nuances I’d like to point out.
The management and most of the staff have changed, and the vibe feels different. Unfortunately, it comes off as less warm and personal. The all-inclusive menu is also less extensive now, particularly the wine and cocktail options. Even some standard cocktails aren’t included anymore. The Andiamo restaurant no longer serves dinner, operating only until 5 PM as a poolside bar and lunch spot. Breakfast now offers only non-alcoholic Prosecco—no more alcoholic Prosecco, Bellinis, or Bloody Marys like before.
During our stay on a short water villa branch, we noticed the villas are showing signs of wear. We even got splinters from the porch wood. There wasn’t a sewing kit provided either, so we couldn’t remove them easily. Our experience with the housekeeping staff wasn’t ideal, even though we left tips and asked the butler to intervene. Eventually, we arranged for cleaning during breakfast time and to have extra beach towels. Still, other small touches were overlooked: no foot towels, cotton pads, or shower caps. Despite being three people, we consistently received only two bottles of sparkling water. Thankfully, we got two large and two medium bottles of still water, or things might’ve turned competitive! Shower gel refills and a shaving kit had to be requested through the butler, as did a third pair of slippers.
To be fair, other guests on beach villas were pleased with their housekeeping, so it seems we were just unlucky. What remains great is the hotel’s responsiveness—they hear you and act quickly. That said, it’s not ideal to spend your vacation requesting umbrella repairs, minibar refills, curtain adjustments, or fresh towels. These should be handled proactively. Still, their team is prompt—engineers came to fix an umbrella just 10 minutes after our butler reported it.
Our butler, Nargiz, was amazing! Also, in the restaurants, two wonderful ladies from Bhutan, Priyata (sorry if I got her name slightly wrong) and her friend, offered excellent service.
However, the final leg left me disappointed:
1. They mistakenly added $98 to our bill, and I had to request its removal. I rarely check bills, but this caught my eye.
2. We were sent off from the resort at noon, yet our Male flight wasn’t until 9:25 PM. Despite asking to be transferred to a domestic flight, we were told there were no options. So, we spent 4.5 hours in the Coral Lounge at Male airport, another waiting area from where you depart to the resort. It felt unnecessary to leave so early as neither departing family was rushed—it really soured the ending.
3. At the start of our trip, we also faced a long wait for the seaplane to the resort (arrived in Male at 5:15 AM, flew out at 2 PM). This was likely due to off-season timing and low occupancy. It’s bearable for adults, but I wouldn’t risk it with kids.
To be fair, the hotel showed understanding and waived some charges for Bellinis we had been ordering out of habit, not realizing their new policy charged for them. Thanks to Nargiz’s help, everything was resolved, and we were told “Enjoy!”
We were also lucky with the weather—only one day of rain—and as the resort was under-booked, it felt peaceful and relaxing. Overall, the trip was a success!
P.S. Dear management, my son asked me to point out that a billiard ball is missing. It doesn’t affect gameplay too much, but it’s still a letdown! :)
