🇰🇬 Bishkek & Cholpon-Ata: My Honest Review After 5 Days in Kyrgyzstan
I spent 5 days in Kyrgyzstan: 2 days in Bishkek and the rest of my trip in Cholpon-Ata on the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake. Overall, I left with very mixed feelings.
📍 Bishkek — 4/10
My first impression was quite positive. The city has a strong Soviet-era character, which is reflected in its architecture, streets, and overall atmosphere. Compared to Almaty, I personally found Bishkek less modern and less well-developed, although it definitely has its own unique charm.
The biggest advantage is the prices. You can easily find meals starting from $5, while dining at higher-end restaurants can cost up to $60. Supermarkets were also noticeably cheaper than in Almaty.
One of my favorite places was Coffee Lab—a stylish café with excellent specialty coffee. Their iced Americano was one of the best I’ve ever had. I also recommend visiting the National History Museum.
Dordoy Market is another must-see. It’s huge, incredibly affordable, and offers almost everything you can imagine—but bargaining is essential.
Transportation, however, was disappointing. Even though Bishkek is much smaller than Almaty, taxi fares were surprisingly higher. Public transportation is also less convenient, and payment is only possible with a Visa bank card or a local transport card, which isn’t easy for tourists to obtain.
There aren’t many parks, and the city doesn’t have much greenery, so the summer heat feels quite intense.
The most disappointing experience happened at Bellissimo. While we were eating, several children repeatedly approached our table asking for money. Eventually, they took our food, and the staff barely reacted. I was also surprised that some prices on the bill didn’t match the menu, and we were even charged for disposable plates. Unfortunately, experiences like this left a negative impression of the service.
Personally, I also didn’t always feel comfortable walking around at night. I often came across groups of people that made me feel uneasy, and there were quite a few children persistently asking tourists for money.
🍽️ Places I Visited
☕ Coffee Lab — 10/10
Amazing specialty coffee and a beautiful interior.
🥟 Kulikov — 6/10
Average food, but the service could be better.
🍝 Makaronnaya Lavka — 5/10
Friendly staff, but the food wasn’t memorable, and both the desserts and drinks were overly sweet.
🍕 Bellissimo — 2/10
Only the drinks were good. Everything else was disappointing due to the service and the unpleasant experience during dinner.

🌊 Cholpon-Ata — 1/10 (Issyk-Kul Lake — 10/10)
We traveled from Bishkek to Cholpon-Ata with inDrive for 3,000 KGS (three seats). The price was great, but the comfort level was very poor. The journey took almost four hours instead of the usual three.
Our biggest disappointment started the moment we arrived.
We had booked a hotel through Booking.com, but when we got there, the staff told us they no longer accepted Booking reservations and simply refused to check us in without offering any assistance. It was already 11:00 PM, which made the situation even more stressful.
We then booked another hotel through Airbnb, but encountered a similar issue. Thankfully, the second hotel eventually helped us find a solution, although it was far from the smooth arrival we had expected.
In the end, we moved to Baytur Resort, and I highly recommend it. Yes, it’s more expensive, but the difference in comfort is absolutely worth it. The resort has a private beach, excellent restaurants, a great spa, and genuinely good service.
Issyk-Kul Lake itself is absolutely stunning.
Unfortunately, Cholpon-Ata was the biggest disappointment of the trip. The town felt more like a transit stop than a resort destination. There isn’t much to do, many areas look outdated, and the public beaches were not always clean.
We also booked a mountain tour with mixtour.kg. Everything was confirmed in advance, but no one showed up, and nobody informed us that the tour had been canceled. We lost almost an entire day because of this.
We also spent some time at AIZA Beach Club.
The entrance fee was 4,000 KGS per person, including a 2,000 KGS food credit, while the remaining 2,000 KGS covered a sunbed, umbrella, and towel.
The beach itself was beautiful, but I personally found the service disappointing, and the food didn’t meet my expectations.
🍽️ Places I Visited
🏖️ AIZA Beach Club — 4/10
Beautiful location, but the food and service didn’t impress me.
🥩 French Restaurant at Baytur Resort — 10/10
Excellent food, reasonable prices, and outstanding service.
🍝 Italian Restaurant at Baytur Resort — 10/10
One of the best dining experiences of the entire trip.
For the return trip, we took a shared minibus for 600 KGS per person. We had been promised air conditioning, but it wasn’t working. Road closures caused long traffic delays, making the journey much longer than expected.
Final Thoughts
❤️ The highlight of Kyrgyzstan is undoubtedly its nature. Issyk-Kul Lake, Ala Archa National Park, and the mountains are absolutely worth visiting.
