After taking the mountain cable car up the mountain, you can transfer to a four-wheel vehicle to go to the closer top of the mountain. However, the weather is changeable and clouds may suddenly appear. The mountain top is dark red with black in color. Some holes are still spewing smoke and sulfur. You can feel the heat when you touch the ground. It is very interesting and the scenery is unique.

It was raw, powerful, and unforgettable — a reminder that Etna is very much alive. From crater rims to sweeping views of the Ionian coast, this is a place where nature shows both its beauty and its force. There's a cable car that takes you from 2000m to nearly 3000m for about €50, and if you go higher than 3000m you need to arrange a guide to take you up any higher in advance. for this trip i stayed in catania and did simple day trips. easy trains, buses, and tours from one base (＾▽＾)ﾉ day 1 — catania lava-dark streets, baroque facades, and a very alive fish market. i spent the first day just in catania: museums, churches, and getting used to the rhythm of the city. • airport → catania: local bus or alibus to the center, around 20–30 min depending on traffic. • once in town you can mostly walk. the historic center is compact (｡•‿•)っ day 2 — siracusa day trip siracusa feels calmer: mix of ancient greek stones and cute island streets on ortigia. perfect for one day. • catania → siracusa: regional train from catania centrale, usually about 1 h 10–20 min. buses are similar or a bit longer. • from siracusa station you walk or take a quick local bus to ortigia and the archaeological park. i came back to catania in the evening and still had time for dinner near the duomo. day 3 — etna volcano one full day for etna. black lava, old craters, and views over the coast if the weather is kind. • easiest from catania: organized tour or bus to rifugio sapienza on the south side, around 1 h 30–2 h up the mountain it is cooler up there, so layers are important and shoes with a bit of grip help on the ash. day 4 — taormina day trip taormina is a balcony above the sea: greek theatre, narrow streets, and views to etna on clear days. very scenic and also quite busy. • catania → taormina: regional train from catania centrale to taormina-giardini, about 45–60 min. • from the station you either take a local bus or taxi up the hill to the historic center. i spent the day between the theatre, small streets, and a slow coffee with a view before returning to catania. this catania base worked well: no hotel changes, just simple day bags and return every night. in the next posts i will share more detailed ideas for what to see and do in catania, siracusa, taormina, and around etna (╹◡╹) #sicily #sicilia #catania #siracusa #ortigia #taormina #etna #volcano #eastcoast #italy #italiatravel #traintrip #daytrips #itinerary #citybase #mediterranean #history #architecture #greektheatre #baroque #travelguide #traveldiary #tripcom

In the afternoon, the sun began to become lazy, and after the hot springs we continued north to Messina. This is the gateway to Sicily and the closest point to the Italian mainland. At dusk, I watched the ferry slowly leaving the harbor. The golden sunset sprinkled on the sea, like a layer of honey. At night, we ordered local swordfish and white wine at a restaurant by the harbor. The sea breeze tasted a bit salty and a bit sweet. Day 2 — Chasing light along the North Shore! The next morning, we sailed west along the north coast to Cefalù, known as the most beautiful seaside town in Sicily. This is a town that makes you want to slow down, with narrow alleys, cobblestone roads, and colorful clothes drying on the balconies. We walked up the bell tower of Cefalù Cathedral and overlooked the blue Mediterranean Sea from above. Arrive in Palermo in the afternoon. This city is more bustling and more vibrant than I imagined. The sounds of hawking could be heard in the market. I ate some fried rice balls (Arancino) from a roadside stall and walked into the Palermo Cathedral, which was shining with golden mosaics. It was like walking into another time and space. At night, Palermo becomes mysterious and charming. Jazz music floats in the old town, and strangers talk about their dreams in the tavern. This night seemed to have merged into the soul of this city. Day 3 — Over the hills, back to the starting point of the dream. On the last day, we abandoned the coastal route and chose to cross the inland of Sicily. Driving to Enna, this ancient city standing on a high hill is like a fortress in the sky. Standing on the high walls of Castello Castle, you can see the hills of Sicily rising and falling like waves of the earth. This is a suitable place to settle down and say goodbye. In the afternoon, we drove slowly back to Catania Airport along the winding mountain road along the highway. Looking back on these three days, it is like a condensed dream, with the embrace of the sea, the tenderness of the mountains, and the passion of the city. If you're visiting Taormina, I highly recommend stopping by. ♥️ How to get there: It's easy to reach if you have a car, but I took a bus from the Taormina bus station. 💛 Perched higher than Taormina, Castelmola offers stunning views of Taormina as well as Mount Etna. 💕 In this quaint village, enjoying an Aperol Spritz at a restaurant with a great view while admiring the scenery gave me a fresh perspective on Italy. 💙 On the way back to Taormina, I walked down. Exploring the small villages along the way made for a wonderful memory. It took about 40 minutes. I also encountered people walking up, but I personally couldn't manage the uphill climb 😂. If you plan to walk up, make sure to bring trekking shoes 😉.
