Highline hiking starting from Logan Pass in Glacier National Park. The shore is 100m from the Two Medicine Store parking — free, 24h within the day-use window (store closes 6 p.m., lake access open till dusk). I arrived at 7:50 p.m. in early September (sunset 7:38 — so I caught the afterglow), sat on the lodge-shore rocks facing west across the 2-mile lake. Rising Wolf Mountain caught the last vertical light — the quartzite went from bone to tangerine to indigo in 22 minutes — while the lake mirrored it, and a loon called twice. A $4 huckleberry ice cream from the store earlier. Mistake: coming in July at 6 p.m. — Going-to-the-Sun crowds spill over, the shore is a family picnic; September weekdays are the move. Another: standing at the boat dock — the rocks 50m north (toward Paradise Point trailhead) have the open west reflection. Rule: bear country — don't walk the Paradise Point trail at dusk alone (grizzly), stay on the shore; no swimming after 8 p.m. (cold shock, 12°C); pack out all trash. #easytravelpost Many Glacier is the most beautiful corner of Glacier National Park, and also the most logistically annoying. The road to Many Glacier Hotel from Babb is rough in spots, and the parking lot fills by 7 a.m. in August. I reserved the boat shuttle on Swiftcurrent and Josephine Lakes in advance. Round trip by boat plus hiking is about 7.6 miles; without the boat it is closer to 11 miles round trip. Boat fare was in the mid-twenties, card accepted, and the 8:30 boat was sold out, so I took 9:00. The trail from the upper boat dock climbs steadily through bear grass meadows, past tiny glacial tarns, and finally to the Grinnell Glacier overlook. Upper Grinnell Lake is opaque turquoise from rock flour. The glacier itself has retreated so far that the “glacier view” is now a hangover of ice on the upper cirque rather than a wall of blue at your feet. Still worth it. Swiftcurrent Lookout sits on a spur and adds elevation but gives you that classic postcard frame of the valley. Bear rule here is strict: parties of four or more recommended, spray mandatory, and rangers close the trail if a grizzly is feeding near the path. I hiked with three others and still felt small. Mistake I made: I wore low-cut shoes and twisted an ankle on the scree above the lake. Trekking poles and mid boots are the move. Also, Many Glacier has almost no cell signal; download maps offline. If the glacier keeps retreating, do you think Glacier NP should rename itself, or does the name still honor what was there a century ago?

#itinerarycheck I hiked this mid-August starting at the Many Glacier Hotel dock, not the picnic area, which is the smarter play if you want to save energy for the upper switchbacks. The Glacier Park Boat Co. shuttle crosses Swiftcurrent Lake then Lake Josephine: round-trip boat fare was $27.50 (card accepted at the kiosk, book morning of or day prior if possible – 8:30 and 9:00 sell out). Without boats it’s 17 km round trip; with them, 11.6 km and about 540 m gain. From the Josephine upper dock I walked the east shore, passed the Grinnell Lake junction (skip unless you want extra km), then started the real climb: steady switchbacks, one short ledge section above a waterfall, and finally the view over Upper Grinnell Lake with the Grinnell Glacier tongue and Salamander snowfield behind it. I left the hotel at 7:15, caught the 7:45 boat, reached the overlook at 10:40, ate for 35 min, and was back at the dock for the 1:45 return boat. Total 5h20m. Bear sign was fresh – grizzly tracks in the mud near the creek crossing – so I hiked loud, kept spray on the hip belt, and never got between a sow and cubs (none seen, but ranger at Apgar warned the Many Glacier corridor is the busiest bear zone in the park). Mistake I made: I wore trail runners, not boots – the upper switchbacks still had packed snow/ice in the shaded gully and I slipped once. Others: is the 10:00 boat too late if you want photos before haze? I’d say 8:30 or 9:00 only. Also, Many Glacier Road construction in 2025–26 means timed entry may apply – check before you drive in. Would you rather do this or the Highline-to-Garden Wall Grinnell Overlook from Logan Pass? Different pain, same glacier.

I was on the Crypt Lake Trail, which starts in Waterton Lakes National Park (Canada) and ends at a trailhead that is technically in the US, though there are no border fences on the ridge line. To complete the hike legally, you must hike back into Canada via the official trail and then present yourself at the Crandell Lake warden station to clear customs. I finished the grueling hike—involving a tunnel crawl and a chain-assisted cliff traverse—only to realize I had left my passport in my car at the Waterton Townsite trailhead. Panic set in. At the warden station, a Parks Canada conservation officer and a US Customs and Border Protection agent were waiting. I expected a fine or a long detention. Instead, the officers were incredibly understanding. Because I had a valid Alberta driver's license and a Nexus card (though not my passport), they allowed me to "report" verbally. The US agent actually produced a special "International Peace Park" commemorative stamp and stamped my small hiking notebook, essentially using it as a temporary travel document. He explained that while they are strict about documentation, they recognize the unique nature of the park. However, he strongly advised carrying a passport for future crossings. It was a fascinating insight into cross-border cooperation. If you hike the border trails here, carry your passport, even if you think you won't cross. From July 1 to July 5, starting from 🇨🇦 Vancouver, crossing 🇺🇸 Washington, Idaho, Montana, then returning to BC through Alberta, Canada. The total distance is about 2800 kilometers. Day 1 Richmond → Leavenworth → Steptoe Butte → Spokane Valley First visit the German-themed town of Leavenworth, then head to Steptoe Butte to overlook Washington State’s iconic wheat fields. Stay overnight in Spokane Valley. Day 2 Spokane Valley → Coeur d’Alene → Sandpoint → Kootenai Falls → Whitefish Cross three states in one day: Washington, Idaho, and Montana, accompanied by beautiful lakes and mountains. Stay overnight in Whitefish. Day 3 Whitefish → Glacier National Park → 🇨🇦 Alberta → Rossland Enter from the west gate early in the morning and drive along Going-to-the-Sun Road, stopping at The Loop, Weeping Wall, Big Bend, Logan Pass, Jackson Glacier Overlook, Wild Goose Island Overlook, and St. Mary. We were lucky to see deer, mountain goats, and black bears. After leaving the national park, enter Alberta, Canada via Chief Mountain Highway, then return to BC along Highway 3. Most sections are two-way single lanes with many curves, so drive cautiously and slowly. On the way to Logan Pass, there was a collision with an oncoming vehicle ahead. Fortunately, kind locals directed alternating traffic flow, so the delay was not long. ✅ We arrived at Logan Pass at noon on July 3 (National Park free admission day). There were still plenty of parking spaces available, contrary to online claims of difficulty parking. This is a self-drive loop at the US-Canada border that offers a rich experience of wheat fields, glaciers, snow-capped mountains, lakes, ferries, and wildlife.

I’ve wanted to drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road since I first watched the opening sequence of *The Shining*. There is something quite haunting and beautiful about how the road winds through the Montana mountains, and seeing it in person felt surreal. We spent a few days exploring the park. A favourite spot of mine was Lake McDonald. The colourful pebbles under the water are incredibly grounding to sit by, and it is a lovely place to just breathe and listen to the water before the crowds arrive. We did the hike up to Logan Pass. The views are stunning, but the parking situation there is quite stressful. If you aren't there before 7 am, it is nearly impossible to find a space, which I personally wouldn't recommend if you prefer a slower, more mindful morning. Taking the park shuttle is a much calmer alternative. Just a small tip if you are visiting: make sure to carry bear spray. Coming from Ireland, the idea of hiking with bear spray took some getting used to, but it is essential for peace of mind on the trails.

Starting from the Many Glacier area, we hiked to Shangri La and Iceberg! Normally there is a trail to Iceberg, but there is no trail to Shangri La, so we pushed our way through the grass and moved forward lol Because it is off-trail, Shangri La is not well known! It is a hiking spot that is only known to those in the know.
