The alps offer uncountable breathtaking spots to visit, this one is in the Italian alps, more precisely in Piedmont, in the north west of the country. Lago di Ceresole (Ceresole Lake) is a scenic artificial alpine reservoir at 1,582 meters above sea level in the Orco Valley, Piedmont, Italy. It's set within the Gran Paradiso National Park, and the best part is that it features a flat 7.5 to 9 km walking trail around the water, accessible even to people that are not confident when it comes to hiking, not only the trail is flat but there are also picnic tables all along the loop to sit and take a break if needed! The water has an incredible colour and stunning mountain backdrops, and nearby access to the Nivolet Pass (buses to reach the pass need to be reserved at least a day in advance before 6pm). The fortresses were built by different people over the centuries, like the Romans, the Savoy, and even Napoleon. Some of them are on top of mountains, like Fort Bard, which is an amazing sight. Other fortresses are in the valleys, like the ones in Saint-Vincent and Châtillon. They have beautiful gardens and spas, and you can relax and enjoy the view of the Alps. Look back at the French valley, and ahead lies the majestic Italian glacier. Afterward, you will pass the La Casermetta Environmental Museum, converted from an old border guard post. · Overnight stay: Rifugio Elisabetta is built on a cliff platform facing the Glacier de la Lée Blanche. It is recognized as an eagle's nest viewpoint, offering stunning views of the alpenglow at sunset. · D2: Take the high route to the town of Courmayeur (Rifugio Elisabetta to Courmayeur), approx. 15–18 km, significant descent (approx. 1400–1600m), 5–6 hours of hiking. . High route hiking: Walk the Grand Balcon Sud, climb to the Mont Favre ridge (2430m), and enjoy excellent views overlooking the entire Val Veny and the south face of Mont Blanc. · Overnight stay: Arrive in Courmayeur. This is the most bustling supply station on the Italian side with complete facilities. Many people take a rest day here, ride the Skyway cable car to the observation deck, or visit the hot springs (QC Terme) at the foot of the mountain to relieve fatigue. · D3: Walk the Mont Blanc Balcony (Courmayeur to Rifugio Bonatti) · Hiking: Approx. 12–14 km, 800–900m ascent, takes 4.5–5.5 hours. · Highlight section: After leaving the town, climb continuously to reach Rifugio Bertone (1989m), followed by a gentle traverse along the mountainside. The entire route is accompanied on the left by the north face of the Grandes Jorasses and hanging glaciers. It is known as the balcony section of the TMB and is extremely photogenic. · Overnight stay: Rifugio Bonatti, known as the most beautiful mountain hut on the entire trail. Facing the Grandes Jorasses, it is an excellent spot for photographing the starry sky and sunset. If you only stay in one mountain hut on the TMB, many people choose this one. 💡 Key Tips · Scenic highlight: The valley traverse from Bertone to Bonatti is widely considered the climax of the trail; don't miss it just to rush. · Booking: During the peak summer season, Rifugio Elisabetta and Bonatti are in high demand; book at least 3–4 months in advance. · Hiking season: The best time is from late June to mid-September. August is the busiest, while early September offers beautiful autumn scenery and fewer crowds.

If you are struggling, consider camping at the lakeside campsite along the way (near Lago del Miage) to rest. · Watch out for cattle: There is a cattle farm on the main road approaching Rifugio Maison Vieille, and many cows may block the path. It is recommended to wait and pass with others, or keep a safe distance and walk around them. · Weather and trail conditions: This section is at a high altitude. If hiking in June or September, you are likely to encounter snow, so be sure to wear waterproof, non-slip hiking boots and bring trekking poles. 💡 Practical tips If you still have energy, you can try to descend directly to Courmayeur to rest, but this will significantly increase the distance and elevation gain. It is recommended to arrange a shuttle to Courmayeur in advance. After finishing this exhausting day, Courmayeur has shops and restaurants, making it a great place for supplies and rest.

The ultimate battle of white and black (Les Grands Montets flank) When you gasp climbing the scree slope and look up, the massive white granite of Mont Blanc looms like a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier suddenly pressing down before your eyes. That overwhelming feeling instantly explains why this place is called the “white hell.” 2. Color overload (Italian side at Fenetre d'Arpette or Col de la Seigne) Crossing the pass into Italy, the blue sky is an unreal cobalt blue. Below your feet is a caramel-colored scree slope, and in the distance, a dark green conifer forest belt. 3. The “3D surround sound” of cowbells (Swiss Trient valley) The most unforgettable part of the Swiss section isn’t the scenery but the sound. As you walk through the meadows, cowbells from all directions create a natural Doppler effect due to their different sound sources. The auditory feast is so rich that you hesitate to cover it up with the sound of your footsteps. 4. The “ghost pine forest” in the morning mist Approaching Courmayeur, you pass through oddly shaped five-needle pines, touch larches with soft needles, see the sharp peaks reflected in the water, and witness the confluence of two streams of snowmelt—one muddy, one clear. 5. A perfect finish at the magnificent Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix Back in Chamonix, the next morning I took the cable car up to the famous Aiguille du Midi viewing platform at 3,842 meters. The cold air was biting. Across from me, Mont Blanc stood covered in snow and ice, with rugged black rock faces. This grandeur is the best reward for the last day of a long trek. Wow! My partner surprised me with a stay here because it was one of the first hotels we visited together back when it was still Nobu. Aethos has done an amazing job; the staff were so friendly, the spaces maintained their high-end charm yet felt a bit brighter compared to when it was Nobu. That said, I did miss the warm scented towels we used to get on arrival at Nobu. They did offer a pillow menu, which was a fun touch—I requested a chamomile pillow but couldn't really notice a difference in scent. Regardless, I had a fantastic night's sleep! We chose to dine at Mitsu on our first night, and it was truly exceptional. The food and service actually surpassed what we remembered from Nobu. Our server Kevin was incredibly personable, and the entire staff went out of their way to make us feel relaxed and welcome. The prices for food were also much more reasonable than Nobu, and the cocktails were both inventive and delicious. Breakfast was another highlight of our stay. I absolutely loved starting each morning with fresh honeycomb on my Greek yogurt, and the continental selection was excellent. On top of that, we could choose a dish from the menu—I went for the mushrooms, while my partner had the eggs Benedict. My only note would be that both dishes felt a touch more like lunch plates than traditional breakfast options due to the seasoning and veggies. The only downside was that after we got home, I noticed our invoice included a charge for mini bar sweets we didn’t consume, which was a bit disappointing. (Side note, the rhubarb Paloma cans in the mini bar are divine!) Overall, it was a fantastic and memorable stay. We were so impressed and can’t wait to come back!

In the italian alps you can find this 32-meter high waterfall, it's located in the Orco Valley within the Gran Paradiso National Park area in Piedmont. It is famous for a unique rock path that lets visitors walk directly behind the rushing water, allowing you to enjoy incredible views and take stunning and unique pictures! The waterfall is located in Noasca, Province of Turin and the trail to reach is short but a bit steep, the starting point is near the parish church or the main road in Noasca center and the duration is 10 to 15 minutes walking each way. The trail is about 0.6 km total with a 41-meter elevation change. !!Wear sturdy hiking shoes or trainers with good grip, as the rocks behind the drop can be wet and slippery!! Despite wearing a wide-brimmed hat and SPF 50 sunscreen, the heat exhaustion was creeping in. I sat down on a rock to rest, feeling lightheaded. A group of Italian hikers passed by, and one woman paused. She didn't offer water—I had plenty—but instead, she reached into her pack and pulled out an individually wrapped, refrigerated wet wipe. She pressed it firmly against the back of my neck and then onto my wrists. The instant cooling effect was miraculous, dropping my skin temperature and clearing the fog in my brain almost immediately. It was a gesture of "cool kindness" that required no words. On alpine trails, the sun is your silent enemy. Standard advice says drink water, but managing heat absorption is just as critical. Pack cooling towels or, failing that, a bandana you can dip in every stream. Keep a few of those expensive, individually wrapped alcohol wipes in a ziplock bag; they weigh nothing but provide incredible evaporative cooling when applied to pulse points (neck, wrists, temples). Also, wear UV-blocking arm sleeves even if it feels hot; they protect your skin and actually keep you cooler than bare arms. When we realized we didn't have milk for coffee, it was brought up to us so quickly. The staff were attentive and kind, making my partner's birthday truly special! Yesterday, I revisited Casa Laugier, albeit only from the outside. Built in 1905 by architect Tagliaferri for a wealthy Aosta Valley family, it is a significant example of the Liberty style. The building stands out for the contrast between the red exposed bricks, the decorative use of cement, the painted ceramic floral motifs, the wrought iron balconies, and the cement lion heads on the main floor. Notably, since its construction, the building has housed the Santa Teresa Pharmacy (see reviews), whose wooden interior furnishings, also in the Liberty style and contemporary to the house, are still in use. A beautiful building well worth a visit!

You don't expect to share a mountainside with a herd of wild ibex, but in Gran Paradiso it happens 🐐. These were grazing in the open, completely unbothered by us, the big males with those huge curved horns moving slowly across the grass. The alpine ibex is the symbol of this park for a reason: they were almost hunted to extinction, and Gran Paradiso became Italy's first national park in 1922 largely to save them. Higher up the snow was still lying in deep patches, and you could read the whole morning in the animal tracks crossing it. We even stopped to build a tiny snowman on a rock while the peaks watched over us ⛄. If you want to see the ibex, go early, they come down to feed in the first hours after sunrise and again near dusk, and the meadows around Valnontey above Cogne are one of the most reliable spots. Bring binoculars and don't approach, just sit still and let them pass. The park is free to enter and easy to reach from Aosta. Save this for your trip. We came up into Gran Paradiso expecting spring and walked straight back into winter. It was the third week of May, the valleys below already green, but the moment the trail climbed, the snow took over and the big peaks were still completely white ❄️. Gran Paradiso is the oldest national park in Italy, and standing under that wall of snow and rock you understand why they protected it. I climbed a boulder just to take in the scale, the summits rise over 4,000 metres and from the valley you feel tiny. Lower down, a fast glacial river cuts through the stones, ice-cold and clear straight off the snowfields. If you go in late spring: the lower valley walks from Cogne or Valsavarenche are easy and clear, but anything higher still needs proper boots and layers, the snow stays soft and deep into the afternoon 🥾. Entry is free, and you reach the park from Aosta in under an hour by car. Go early, the light on the peaks is best before midday. Save this for your own Gran Paradiso hike.
