The lake is a perfect oval, fed by mountain streams; the mossy fir meadow loop starts at the east shore—Abies albadrops moss on the roots, the meadow grass is thigh-high, fireflies in June. 4 km loop, free after entry. I wore trail runners, slipped on moss-logs—poles helped. Mistake: I visited Sunday 11 am—coach crowd. Go Tue–Thu, 7 am. A park guard shared his bryndza (sheep cheese) on bread and said “the moss keeps the fir seedlings alive when the snow presses, without it the meadow turns to mud.” Stay at Synevyr Eco Lodge (800 UAH/night, cash only, book by calling the gate 1 day prior—no online). We’ve been vacationing at this hotel for the second year with our kids, and we love it. The hotel is quite close to the airport, with a large, secure territory. I feel safe letting the kids travel alone to the Front Hotel on the shuttle bus, which runs every 10 minutes between Sport and Front. Room cleaning is great, with decorative towel swans and flowers that add a lovely touch. The staff at the reception are always welcoming and helpful. Special thanks to Mohamed Amer for his work—he welcomed and checked us in last year and this year, too! The food at the hotel is excellent, with nightly barbecues featuring chicken, beef, kebab, fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, and pastries. Guests staying in Sport can also enjoy breakfast and lunch at the Italian restaurant, with dinner available there on Sundays. This year, I visited the spa at the Front Hotel, and the staff were delightful, with affordable treatments. I had a full-body massage, while my kids enjoyed the jacuzzi in a cool and relaxing atmosphere. Big thanks to Donya from Alexandria for the wonderful massage! The sea is stunningly clean, as is the beach. It’s best to arrive early in the morning to claim sunbeds and swim before others stir up the water. The highlight of this vacation was spotting a huge stingray! The hotel is family-friendly, but also welcomes younger guests from countries like England, Germany, Italy, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Algeria, and local Egyptian families. Horse riding is an option, too. Last year, I rode a calm horse named Caramel along the waterfront, taking in the sunrise and enjoying the cooler morning weather—such beautiful memories and photos. Entertainment includes morning gym, aqua aerobics, volleyball, and a beach white party every two weeks. There’s also a padel court with evening lights, providing a great way to enjoy the cool evening breeze. The animation team is calm and non-intrusive. The waterslides are a hit with kids, and even adults enjoy them! They’re open for two hours before lunch and two hours after, with lifeguards stationed at both ends for safety. Once, they promptly helped my daughter with a nosebleed caused by the heat and treated her scraped knee after a minor slip. In the evenings, Soho Square is close by, with security at all entrances and exits. I felt at ease letting the kids shop for souvenirs and explore. This year, we even watched the World Cup there. We highly recommend this hotel for families with kids and hope to return next year!

The moss on the wooden viewing deck was black-green with spruce needle, ate a 120 UAH market bryndza+cornbread, watched the lake glass under cloud at 09:30. Mistake: I went Sunday in Jul — vehicle ban on the lake road, taxi dropped 2 km out, walked; weekday or bike the last 2 km. Another: UAH cash, Mizhhirya ATM limited — draw in Lviv. Would you night-bus 600 UAH + 60 UAH entry for the Synevyr spruce-fir mossy lake loop, or skip the lake crowd and hike up to Ozerna Polonya (7 hr forest climb) instead?

This is an amazing venue that everyone visiting Berlin should experience. Even though the Cold War ended over 30 years ago, you can still feel the tension that must have been present. We also visited the museum near Checkpoint Charlie. While Checkpoint Charlie is free, the museum has an entry fee. It covers the period from 1946 to the present, exploring conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, Far East, and more recently, Ukraine. The museum showcases excellent artifacts from global conflicts (post-WW2), including the Berlin Wall. I was particularly surprised by a bullet-ridden car that had recently escaped Ukraine. The stark contrast in living conditions between the US and Soviet sides of the Berlin Wall, and the lengths people went to escape Soviet control, were especially eye-opening.

Seeing the rooftops, towers and domes packed together makes you realize how beautiful the historic center really is. Lviv also has a cafe culture that makes slowing down incredibly easy. #bucketlistdestinations Not every bucket-list destination has to be beautiful. Pripyat was on mine for a completely different reason. I had read about Chernobyl for years, seen documentaries and countless photos of the abandoned city. I wanted to see what it actually felt like to stand there. And it felt surreal. Apartment blocks were slowly disappearing behind trees. Empty schools and public buildings still contained traces of everyday life. Nature had taken over streets that once belonged to almost 50,000 people. Of course, I wanted to see the famous amusement park and Ferris wheel too. But strangely, those weren't the things that stayed with me most. It was the ordinary places - apartments, streets and courtyards - that made it easier to imagine that this had once been a normal city. It was fascinating, uncomfortable and completely unlike any other trip I've taken. For me, that's enough to call something bucket-list worthy.
