Then lieutenant governor of Van Diemen’s Land, George Arthur, established Port Arthur as a settlement for the most incorrigible, repeated offenders from Great Britain and Ireland.[i] The juvenile offenders, on the other hand, would end up in Point Puer, also within the settlement. The idea was that hard labor, psychological punishment, trading and religious education combined would reform even the worst of all convicts. Port Arthur situates on the southwestern coast of Van Diemen’s Land. The penal colony inherited natural barriers that prevented the convicts from any kind of escape. The convicts then understood that the waters surrounding the three sides of the penitentiary was infested with sharks. Visitors to the Port Arthur historic site would not miss the theme of the site’s history. We went through a very thoughtful exhibition of the life of the convicts there. The name of the place is perhaps a slight overstatement when it comes to the cave itself. Still, it's worth the 10 minute drive here if you're already visiting Port Arthur for the coastal views around the site, and there are some great walks in the area if you have an hour or two to spare.

Could have easily spent a second day at the Port Arthur Historic Site. There's so much to see and learn. The whole place is beautiful, open, and absolutely sprawling (which is not something I ever expected to say about a prison!).

Tasmania is filled with many natural landscape but do you know it is also filled with many stories and historic sites from ages ago? One is the Port Aurther Historic Site located at in the south east of horbart, where it is approx a 90mins drive around the coast to reach. This is a place that you have to visit as it was deemed under the UNESCO World Heritage Site where there are historic buildings dating back to the 18th/19th centuries along the cliffsode overlooking the coast. This place has many tales where it wad once a place for convicts in a 4 story Penitentiary. A huge Penitentiary which consists of an asylum, hospital and a church. There are also tales of ghost story here which can be quite scary to some. Located 1.5 hours drive from Hobart is the Port Arthur Historic site. Initially created as a timber gathering site in the 1830’s, Port Arthur quickly became of major importance to emerging colonies in Australia due to its highly productive ship yards. The site is large & nestled in a valley, with paths guiding your way around the site. On arrival each visitor is giving a playing card, this corresponds to a past occupant of Port Arthur & you will learn about then down stairs in the museums. Once you have visited the museum you then head onto a 40 minute introductory tour, which shows you around the sight and gives you a deeper insight into the history of the people and the building that formed Port Arthur. After that you proceed to the dock for your bay tour which is also included in the entry fee. This tour which goes out around one of the most important islands of the settlement is again guided. After that you are free to roam the grounds and explore the rest of the site. There are a wide range of extra tours on offer including the “After Dark pack” which includes a 2 course meal at their on-site restaurant and a 90 minute ghost tour. The food was incredible and we had an extremely knowledgeable guide who made the experience very enjoyable.

When people think of Tasmania, places like Cradle Mountain, Wineglass Bay, and Port Arthur usually come to mind. Maria Island, however, often flies under the radar. We almost overlooked it ourselves, but it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of our Tasmania adventure. The weather does not look good. Our adventure began with a choppy ferry ride across strong winds and rough seas, but the excitement of exploring this unique island made it worthwhile. Once ashore, we were welcomed by Cape Barren geese wandering freely around the historic Darlington settlement. Maria Island has a rich past as a convict settlement, but today it’s better known as a wildlife sanctuary. It even plays an important role in conserving Tasmanian devils, with a disease-free population established here in 2012. As we explored, it became clear who the real stars of the island were. Wombats grazed peacefully across open fields, completely unfazed by visitors, while wallabies quietly peeked out from behind the bushes. Watching them go about their day in the wild was one of the highlights of our visit. With only a day on the island, we focused on its coastal attractions. Unfortunately, the high tide and ongoing safety maintenance meant we could only admire the famous Painted Cliffs from a distance. Thankfully, the Fossil Cliffs more than made up for it. Looking closely at the limestone, we could see countless ancient marine fossils—a fascinating reminder that this landscape was once beneath the sea around 300 million years ago. The weather remained cloudy and windy throughout the day, with rain arriving just as we boarded the ferry Triabunna. A pod of dolphins appeared in the choppy sea, swimming in the opposite direction of our ferry. Maria Island may not be Tasmania’s most famous destination, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Peaceful, uncrowded, rich in history, and surrounded by incredible wildlife, it’s a hidden gem that’s well worth adding to your itinerary. Final Notes · Plan ahead if you’re visiting on a day trip—there’s more to see than you can fit into one day. · Check the tide times before visiting the Painted Cliffs, and be aware that parts of the area may occasionally be closed for safety maintenance. · The ferry can be rough on windy days, so bring motion sickness medication if needed. · Keep your camera ready for wildlife—and don’t forget to watch where you step! Seeing both the Northern Lights and the Southern Lights has always been on my travel bucket list. We were fortunate enough to witness the Northern Lights years ago, but there was still one dream left to fulfil—hunting the Southern Lights. When solar activity started making the news again, we knew it was time to plan another trip. We chose Tasmania, one of the best places in the world to see the Southern Lights. I researched the best viewing locations, learned how to read the aurora forecast, and joined local aurora enthusiast groups to pick up tips from experienced chasers. We knew there were no guarantees, but that was all part of the adventure. Chasing an aurora is never guaranteed—it takes the right combination of solar activity, clear skies, darkness, and some luck. That’s all part of the adventure. A Hopeful Beginning – Cape Bruny Lighthouse Our hunt began at Cape Bruny Lighthouse. The forecast looked promising, with strong solar activity and almost clear skies. The only challenge was a bright full moon rose over Bruny Island on that day, making it difficult to spot any aurora with the naked eye. We waited patiently, watching the southern horizon and taking long-exposure photos. To the naked eye, there was nothing unusual, and we left feeling slightly disappointed. Later, experienced aurora chasers pointed out that a faint green aurora had actually appeared in our photos. It wasn’t the colourful display we had hoped for, but it was our very first glimpse of the Aurora Australis. The Night We’d Been Waiting For – The Neck (Truganini Lookout) Two nights later, we headed out again. There was no update from the forecast app, and we had no idea what to expect. But with crystal-clear skies overhead, we decided to give it a try anyway. While we waited, we enjoyed a spectacular sunset before the Milky Way slowly emerged across the sky. Then, it finally happened. A faint white glow appeared on the southern horizon. Although it looked subtle to the naked eye, our camera captured beautiful shades of green, pink, and purple dancing across the sky. After days of waiting and watching the forecasts, we had finally witnessed the Southern Lights. It was everything we had hoped for, even if we wished the display had lasted a little longer. The Chase Continues Our adventure didn’t end there. We continued our journey around Tasmania, but we still made time to head out to Maingon Lookout point and, on our final night, Mount Nelson, hoping for one more unforgettable aurora display. Although aurora activity wasn’t as strong on either night, we were rewarded with breathtaking views of the Milky Way and Tasmania’s incredible night sky. Not every aurora chase ends with dancing lights, and that’s what makes seeing one so special. The waiting, the planning, the cold nights, the biting wind, and even the unsuccessful attempts all became part of the adventure. Looking back, hunting the Southern Lights wasn’t just about seeing the aurora—it was about the journey, the anticipation, and the memories we made along the way.
