It has been an opportunity for me to visit the birthplace of St. Rita of Cascia at Roccaporena in Italy. Went up to the hill where she used to pray and meditate. Stepping into this quaint traditional shaved ice shop, the abundance of vintage decor instantly takes you back to childhood summers. The soft hum of the ice machine mixes with a rich milky aroma as the owner skillfully shaves delicate ice, drenching it in generous amounts of syrup and toppings. The bowl arrives overflowing. It's icy cold but not harsh, and the fine texture slowly melts in your mouth. The creamy flavor blended with the fresh sweetness of fruit is exactly the taste you miss most from childhood. An old TV in the shop plays classic movies on loop, and the cool wooden chairs are incredibly comfortable to sit on. The customers coming and going range from white-haired elders to young couples; everyone holds a small spoon, slowly scooping up their ice with relaxed smiles on their faces. The owner remembers the preferences of many regulars, knowing exactly what toppings they want the moment they walk in. Even the syrup is homemade by the owner, free from the cloying sweetness of artificial syrups, offering only a natural, rich aroma. Long after finishing, a faint, pleasant aftertaste lingers in your mouth, leaving you feeling completely cool and refreshed. This little trip to the shaved ice shop brings childhood summers right back before your eyes, with every bite filled with precious memories. Whenever the summer heat gets unbearable in the future, I'll definitely come back here to sit for a while and enjoy the refreshing taste I've loved since I was a kid.
