#winterescape Cassis is a place not known by many but to the people that have been and know it is a place that is the perfect to wander along the beach and town. To get to this hidden gem is a short train ride from marseille station which is the closest main station. Once you arrive at Cassis station I recommend that you take the bus but if you prefer you can walk to town. Don’t worry about the bus only taking cash as you can pay with your card as well as with a contactless card . Once you get off the bus turn right and walk straight down and you will see the port as well as the beach wander around and enjoy Cassis. If you walk further from the main beach you will stumble across a beach called Plage du bestouan this beach is the only beach where I saw people swim so I assume this is best beach in cassis if you up too swimming. If you are not there is a restaurant across the road which is perfect for lunch with the view of the glistening Mediterranean Sea. Once you finish wandering and exploring cassis just catch the bus back or walk back to the station. If you looking for the perfect place to escape during this winter coldness then the South of France is the place to be. If you live in cold country like I do or if you’ve always wanted to visit the South of France then the winter season is one of the best and most underrated times to go. There are less tourists meaning hotel prices are cheaper and lines shorter to must see attractions ,whilst you can still enjoy sunshine on most days which makes it truly the perfect winter escape. Places to go 🇫🇷: Marseille The vibrant port city and the second largest city in France has so much to offer from exploring the many restaurants near Le Vieux port and seeing the sunset near the stunning Cathédrale de la major. You can also take a day trip to the nearby island of île de ratonneau where you can explore the nature and see the historical ruins whilst walking along a scenic path or if relaxing is more your style than you can take a day trip to the small beach town of Cassis which is just a short 30 minutes away from Marseille by train and wander around the charming town and enjoy a tasty lunch with an ocean view. Nice The beautiful coastal city that is closest to Monaco is Nice. Where you can enjoy costal walks along the beach and eat at restaurants with a view of the beach. Eventually you will reach Colline du Château the best place to see panoramic views over nice, the Old Town and the Mediterranean sea. Usually the wait in summer the lift to the top has long queues but in the winter season the wait is much shorter, on the way down it is best to walk as there are several scenic paths to take whilst the best being the one that you leds back down to the old town. Once you have explored the old town and other highlights in Nice there are so many nearby places that you can easily visit and get to with just a short train ride or bus to. Destinations like Monaco, Antibes and even the French Alps are all places easily reachable. As I have already visited Monaco , I decided to go Antibes which took under 30 minutes by train and explored the old town near the port and enjoyed lunch after an amazing scenic walk along the cost. For something completely different and unexpected experience I decided to go to the French alps by taking the bus 91 to Auroun a ski resort town. I rented Ski equipment and skied on the beginner slope in light layers and wished I rented ski goggles because the sunshine was so bright. Relaxed and grabbed a quick bite in one of the restaurants on the alps which was delicious whilst taking in the stunning views of the Alps then took the late afternoon bus to Nice making it the perfect winter day trip. Between Marseille and Cassis, the coastline is carved by long, winding, narrow inlets (calanques), flanked by towering limestone cliffs adorned with green pines. This natural beauty, both on land and sea, is part of the Calanques National Park. Entry to the park is free. You can enjoy the views of the calanques from the water by taking a boat tour from Marseille or Cassis, or embark on a hike along one of the many trails. 💭 In my opinion, the most stunning views are from the heights of the limestone cliffs, where you can also savor the aroma of sun, sea, and pines! ‼️⚠️ Trekking shoes are essential for hiking in the park. Some sections of the trail have stones polished smooth by the soles of countless visitors, and narrow paths run along cliff edges. A visit to the park can be combined with exploring the charming town of Cassis. Stroll through its picturesque streets and enjoy seafood at one of the cozy restaurants. 🗺️ You can get a free map of the park and comprehensive information at the tourist office located in the center of Cassis port. This is probably the first tourist office in my life that I found truly helpful: informative, with useful tips and recommendations for all attractions. 📌 If you're visiting Cassis for just one day, be mindful of the time. Some hiking routes take several hours and involve significant ascents and descents. Plan your energy accordingly. 📌 Bring water and snacks if needed. 📌 Trekking shoes are a must. 📌 If possible, plan to spend a few days in Cassis for a deeper exploration of the park. Ranked as the number one southern vacation spot by the French, this destination may not be widely known internationally, but it is truly beloved by the locals 🥰. Accessible only through trekking, it’s not the easiest place to reach, but once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by hidden emerald beaches and breathtaking sapphire-colored landscapes. Highly recommended! Additionally, as it’s near the last stretch of the Alps, there are many scenic viewpoints perfect for a drive 🔭. 📍Calanque de Port Pin A hidden emerald beach where you can swim. 📍Belvédère de Port Miou A spot with sapphire-like waters. The view of yachts docked here is stunning, and you can even watch people diving! 📍Rte des Crêtes Driving along this route offers access to numerous scenic viewpoints. However, the road is quite dangerous, so it’s not recommended for beginner drivers.

To get to 'Port-Miou', the starting point of the trekking, you have to pass by the residential areas and hotels of Cassis. When you wonder if this is the right path, a small and pretty beach unfolds. If you trust the map and keep going, you will see several yachts moored in the beautiful turquoise water port, and a magnificent limestone cliff appears as if it has been waiting for you. Upon arriving at Cassis Beach, the first thing that caught my eye was the crystal-clear blue sea and the colorful boats docked at the small harbor. The sunlight reflecting off the gentle waves sparkled like diamonds, and the promenade along the beach was filled with people enjoying the sea breeze and leisure. The pebble beach wasn’t very large, but the water was so clear that you could see the stones at the bottom as soon as you dipped your feet in. Children were playing and laughing in the water, while adults read books or lounged on the beach, taking naps. I sat by the water, gazing at the sea, and spent a long time lost in thought. Time seemed to flow effortlessly, and it felt far from wasted. The highlight of Cassis is undoubtedly the Calanques. This natural park, where rocky cliffs meet deep blue waters, can be explored by boat or accessed through trekking. I opted for a short boat tour to visit several points in the Calanques National Park. The emerald waters nestled between the towering cliffs were breathtakingly beautiful. On the way back, I ended the day perfectly with a dinner of seafood pasta paired with local white wine at a small restaurant near the harbor. Cassis is a gem that harmoniously blends the unique charm, leisure, and natural beauty of Southern France. Its understated elegance made it even more special, and its quietness left a lasting impression. I don’t know when, but I hope to walk along its beach again someday.
