This “building within a building” integrates the stone ruins of a former parchment factory with a Grade 2 listed double fronted Victorian house and its accompanying cattle shed. By delicately inserting two lightweight volumes within the crumbling masonry walls, the intervention preserves and celebrates a heritage structure that was very nearly demolished. The extension was built out of up-cycled materials predominantly found on site which was both cost effective and sustainable, allowing the building to sensitively blend into its surroundings.
