Alexander the Great's most striking focal point is undoubtedly the 28-meter-tall equestrian statue of Alexander the Great towering in the center. Officially named "Warrior on a Horse," its purpose is self-evident. The statue depicts Alexander the Great, clad in armor and holding a spear, majestically pointed toward the sky astride his faithful steed, Bucephalus. The statue is a central component of the North Macedonian government's "Skopje 2014" initiative, which aims to reshape Skopje's cityscape and strengthen the country's national identity through a series of monuments and neoclassical architecture. While the statue and square bring a majestic spectacle to Skopje, they also sparked considerable controversy. This altar was meticulously carved by the Mijak family, renowned woodcarvers from the Debar region, over a period of nearly ten years (1819-1824). Made of walnut, it stretches 10 meters long and 6 meters high, and features intricate carvings. Standing quietly on a hill in the heart of the city, overlooking the winding Vardar River, this imposing stone fortress has witnessed the city's rise and fall over thousands of years. The history of Skopje Fortress dates back to an astonishingly ancient period. Archaeologists have discovered evidence of settlements dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages around the fortress, indicating that this strategic location on the plateau has been a center of human activity since ancient times. The earliest structures of Skopje Fortress itself date back to the 6th century AD, when it was commissioned by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Over the following centuries, the fortress passed through numerous owners, from the Byzantines to the Bulgarians, Serbs, and Ottoman Turks. Each transformation has added new architectural layers and cultural imprints to the fortress, which served as a vital military and administrative center during the Ottoman Empire. Mother Teresa was born in 1910 into an Albanian family in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire. Although she spent most of her life in Kolkata, India, Skopje was the cradle of her faith, upbringing, and her earliest dreams. The memorial is built on the site of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, where she attended school as a child. This location holds special significance for Mother Teresa, as it was this church that guided her on her path of faith and devotion. The memorial's exterior blends modern and religious styles, primarily in white, symbolizing love, purity, and service. The blue windows echo the iconic blue and white vestments worn by Mother Teresa. Honestly, the Turkish presence felt a bit overwhelming for me, especially around the Stone Bridge, where one side feels like “Little Istanbul” and the other side has a more local atmosphere. 📍 Places to Visit in Skopje: 📌 Millennium Cross Located on top of a mountain and reachable by cable car. Offers panoramic views of the city — a peaceful escape from the city noise. 📌 Church of St. Clement of Ohrid One of the most beautiful churches in the city. Its wall frescoes are stunning, and it's definitely worth a visit. 📌 Macedonia Square The heart of Skopje. Features the famous statue of Alexander the Great. The riverside buildings are quite photogenic. There’s often live music performed on the Stone Bridge nearby. 📌 Skopje Fortress (Kale) An old fortress overlooking the city. Nice for a short walk, though it didn’t impress me much personally. Apart from these, you'll come across many other statues and monuments just by walking around — Skopje is full of them. ⛔️ We didn’t have time for Matka Canyon, but it’s a popular destination for boat rides and nature lovers. Definitely worth checking out if you have a few extra hours. 🚌 Getting Around the City We used local buses and didn’t need to pay — there was no functional ticket system during our visit. It might not be official, so check in case things change. 🍽 Where to Eat in Skopje 💸 Food is surprisingly expensive compared to expectations. We tried Destan, famous for its beans (kuru fasulye) — it was okay. If you're craving cevapi, you’ll find it almost everywhere. For more affordable and filling meals, look for Teteks places. Great for budget travelers. 📱 Shopping Tip: Buying iPhones in Skopje Believe it or not, many travelers come to Skopje just to buy iPhones! We bought an iPhone 14 Pro from the Ledicom store. Prices are attractive, but if you pay by card, note there's a 5% commission fee. You can check current prices on their website before visiting.

Leaving Tetovo, it's about a 45-kilometer drive to the capital, Skopje. The roads are in good condition, and there are few cars on the road, so it only takes 35 minutes to arrive. The city architecture of the capital Skopje is very impressive, as if telling visitors about its glorious past. 💥Check-in spots: 1⃣The Old Town of Skopje: The ancient city walls are quite dilapidated, and the outer ring has mostly been newly repaired. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of the entire city. The houses in the old town are arranged in order from low to high. The Vardar River meanders through, and the ancient Turkish market Carsija, the Sveti Dimitrija Church, and the towering Mustafa Pasa Mosque all tell the story of the city's sentiments. 2⃣The Stone Bridge: Quietly lying on the Vardar River, built in the 15th century, it is a symbol of Skopje. 3⃣The central city square: The square is dominated by a bronze statue of Philip II. It was he who raised Macedonia from a small country plagued by internal strife and accumulated great potential in the economy and other aspects. They also like to build a triumphal arch to show off their success, so Skopje has its own Arch of Triumph. After lunch, we also took an external view of the Chinese 🇨🇳 Embassy, walked around to visit Skopje's modern city architecture, and experienced the local culture. Then we drove 128 kilometers on mountain roads to the Jueishevo border crossing at an altitude of about 1230 meters, entering Bulgaria. Bulgaria just joined the EU 🇪🇺 in April, and the customs clearance was very slow. They even checked our luggage, delaying us by 2 hours to cross the border. We hurried towards the overnight stay in the snowy mountain town, still 140 kilometers away.

This time in Tokyo 🗼, my main stop in Ningyocho was to make a pilgrimage to 🥩 "Sukiyaki Kappo Hiyama", which has proudly held a 🏆 Michelin one-star rating for 10 consecutive years. It’s actually a century-old establishment 👴 that started as a premium butcher shop back in 1912 🔪, and later officially opened as a sukiyaki restaurant in 1935 🥘—the history here is truly profound. Since they are originally a meat wholesaler 📦, they have guaranteed access to the highest quality Wagyu 🐂, so the quality is absolutely top-notch 💯. Approaching the entrance ⛩️, you already feel a sense of grandeur. The interior perfectly preserves the traditional Japanese wooden 🪵 architectural style from the early Showa period 🏯. You have to take off your shoes 👞 and change into slippers before heading inside, and the staff will guide you down a long wooden corridor 🚶. The best part is that the entire restaurant features private tatami rooms 🚪, offering incredible privacy and a truly amazing atmosphere 😊. This time, we ordered the premium 👑 Yonezawa beef 🐄 sukiyaki course. 🤩 Seeing the incredibly even marbling of the fat ❄️, it was so beautiful it looked just like a work of art! A dedicated kimono-clad 👘 room attendant (Nakai) handles all the cooking for you from start to finish, and their technique is incredibly skillful 👩🍳. They cook with a secret warishita sauce 🍯. "Hiyama" specializes in highly authentic 🇯🇵, almost "stubbornly" traditional Kanto-style sukiyaki. 💧 The flavor of the warishita is exceptionally deep and rich, yet it doesn’t overpower the natural umami of the 🥩 beef—that is the true brilliance 👍 of it! After the first slice of meat is cooked, you dip it into raw Japanese egg 🥚. It literally melts in your mouth 🫠, and the aroma of the beef fat explodes on your palate 🤤 without feeling heavy or greasy at all. After the first round of meat 🥩, the attendant adds the vegetable 🥬 platter—including Japanese leeks, tofu, enoki mushrooms, and konjac noodles—letting them slowly simmer and absorb the sauce 🍲. The fresh veggies soak up all the rich Wagyu essence 🐂 and the sweetness of the sauce. Paired with Japanese white rice 🍚, it's absolutely fantastic—so delicious I just couldn't stop eating 😋. For the third slice of meat 🥩, I paired it with a little bit of Hiyama's house-made 🧂 Sansho shichimi powder. It added such a wonderful depth of flavor 😍, making it truly unique! North Macedonia is actually Mother Teresa's birthplace. In its capital, Skopje, there is a museum dedicated to her called the Memorial House of Mother Teresa. Inside, you'll find a wide variety of exhibits, including her photographs and handwritten notes. They even have the bed and towels she used, which really gives you a sense of her humble and simple lifestyle. She apparently visited Japan as well, as photos of her trip were on display. It's located just about a 3-minute walk from Skanderbeg Square in Skopje. Admission is free, making it a great place to drop by casually. If you ever travel to Skopje, I highly recommend paying a visit.

In Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, you'll find a massive plaza known as Skanderbeg Square. At its center stands a towering bronze statue of Alexander the Great, surrounded by a fountain that creates a wonderfully refreshing vibe. Lined with restaurants and cafes, this area is bustling with people from noon well into the night. It's the perfect starting point for exploring the city—whether you're heading to the bazaar or checking out the museums. It truly is the hub of sightseeing in Skopje. There are benches around the fountain, making it an excellent spot to take a break. The shade shifts throughout the day, so when I visited in the summer, I'd always scout out a shady bench to sit on—one spot for the morning, and another for the afternoon.

The birdsong is the finishing touch, and the sound of the wind is the spreading ink—they are not created for anyone, yet they give the entire mountain forest a soulful resonance. Walking amidst it all, I suddenly feel as though I am also a single brushstroke, lightly dotted onto the canvas, inconspicuous yet indispensable. The world quiets down in an instant, not because the sound has vanished, but because the heart is no longer desperate to fill the void. We constantly fear the blank spaces, fear the silence, fear losing our place in the clamor, unaware that true abundance often reveals itself in the negative space. The birds don't seek an audience, and the wind doesn't ask where it's going; they simply sing, simply flow, simply exist in their own way. And here on these stone steps, I also begin to learn this composure of neither seeking to please nor needing to explain. I'm no longer in a rush to prove anything, no longer rushing to reach a destination. I just walk, just listen, just let the wind pass through the hem of my clothes and let the birdsong wash over my eardrums. It turns out that no matter how far we travel, we ultimately return to our inner selves; no matter how high we climb, it is only to gain a clearer view of the path we took to get here. From the hilltop, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Skopje's unique cityscape and take in the amazing scenery with a nice breeze. The Google Maps entrance detour If you follow Google Maps to get here, the entrance can be really confusing—I ended up taking a detour myself...!
