#adventuretrips I'm usually the laziest person who never exercises, not even a casual hiker. But the day before yesterday, I somehow managed to do a day hike on one of North America's most epic trails, The Enchantments Traverse. Started at 5 AM and didn't finish until 1 AM the next day. We're talking 21 miles, 19 hours, and almost 70,000 steps. Looking back, I honestly think I was both crazy and badass. The views along the way were absolutely stunning. You get to see all kinds of landscapes, tons of different alpine lakes, and cute little animals. The core section was so beautiful it felt unreal, like something out of this world. Seriously, photos don't even come close to capturing how breathtaking it was. But as gorgeous as it was, there's no way to describe how desperate the whole experience felt. This day hike was insanely difficult and dangerous, like, seriously life-threatening. Aasgard Pass was definitely the toughest part of the whole route. You're talking about climbing 2,200 feet of loose scree in less than a mile. All I can say is, you really have to rely on yourself, haha, there's no clear trail! Some rocks are loose and there's tons of scree, so you have to watch out for falling rocks from people ahead of you - they hurt like hell when they hit you. A lot of people say Aasgard Pass is nothing compared to the descent, but with my balance being as wobbly as a banana and my short, skinny legs with zero muscle, I honestly thought I was gonna fall to my death on Aasgard Pass. With my mind racing and my body completely drained, that one mile took me over two hours. Now let's talk about the descent. If Aasgard Pass was tough with a high skill barrier, the way down was just pure mental torture. The trail was long and endless, like some never-ending noodle noodles. The conditions were awful, with all kinds of terrain. The granite was super hard and brutal on your knees and feet. Every single step felt like torture. There were several sections on steep cliffs that were super dangerous. Some big granite boulders were so steep that short-legged folks like me had to basically slide down on our butts. Later on, I was zigzagging back and forth for what felt like dozens of times, like I was stuck in some loop. With my mind about to explode and my legs already sore and numb, finding out it was dark and I still had over 10 kilometers to go... I was seriously about to lose it, just running on pure survival mode. Basically, those 19 hours were just torture beyond what the brain can even process. I get PTSD just looking at granite now. Café stop: The Gingerbread Factory on Front Street for a 5 USD latte and a 4 USD almond horn, or Louis Coffee (European pastries, real-melted hot choc 4.50 USD) — both card ok. I sat at Louis's curb bench at 11:40, the moss on the building's north wall still wet, accordion music leaking from Andreas Keller across the street, and ate the horn watching the Icicle Ridge snowline. Aasgard Pass starts at the lake's southeast corner: 670 m gain in <1.6 km, talus and scree, class 2–3, snow lingers to late June. I climbed it in 80 min with poles, turned at the lip (no Core Zone overnight permit—$5/person/night via Recreation.gov lottery, Feb 15–Mar 1 application window, 3–5% odds for Core, 10–15% for Colchuck). Day-hikers don't need the lottery, just the free self-issue. Mistake: I wore trail runners on Aasgard in July and slipped on the ball-bearing scree—B2 boots. The lot at the end of Icicle Road fills fast in summer, and if you do not have a Discover Pass displayed on the dash, you risk a citation on state land. From the trailhead, the walk to Colchuck Lake is about 4 miles one way with roughly 2,200 feet of gain. It is classified as moderate, but the last switchbacks before the lake are steep enough that I passed three people turning back because they wore sneakers and carried no water. The lake itself is the kind of teal that does not look real. Granite Pass sits above and beyond the lake, another 1.5 miles and 1,000 feet up, and that is where the Enchantments permit zone begins. Here is the part most day hikers miss: you do not need a Core Enchantments overnight permit to hike to Colchuck Lake or even up toward Granite Pass for a day trip, but the moment you drop below Aasgard Pass into the Core Zone or camp anywhere in the zones from May 15 to October 31, you must have the lottery permit. Day hikers commonly get turned around by rangers near the pass if they cannot explain where they are going. The advance lottery opens briefly in February or March, costs a few dollars to apply, and the daily walk-in drawing happens in Wenatchee. I did not win the Core Zone, so I treated Colchuck and Granite Pass as a long day hike instead. That was the right call. Boots with ankle support, 2 liters of water, and an early start made it enjoyable rather than punishing. One mistake I made: I underestimated how cold the wind gets at Granite Pass even in August. The granite warms in sun, but the shade bites. Carry a wind shell. If you want photos without crowds, be at the lake by 8 a.m. After 10, the day hikers and photographers pile in. Would you rather gamble on the Enchantments lottery for months or just enjoy Colchuck as a spectacular standalone day hike?

I linked it as a 17 mi / 27 km loop over two days, but the core day-hike chunk is Bridge Creek → Rainbow Lake → PCT junction → McAlester Pass → back down, about 12 mi / 19 km with ~2,800 ft gain if you skip the overnight.The first 3 miles are flat along Bridge Creek (great cold-water refill, treat it), then a steady climb to Rainbow Lake at 5,400 ft, a subalpine tarn ringed by heather. The PCT junction at 5,900 ft is where southbound thru-hikers peel off; I sat there 20 minutes and counted four of them in 2025. From the junction it's a grind up to McAlester Pass (6,150 ft) then a long switchback descent through old burn regrowth—wildflowers insane in late July, but no shade after 11 am. Permits: this is backcountry wilderness inside North Cascades NP complex, so a free self-issued wilderness permit at the trailhead register (not the parking pass—that's the $5 Northwest Forest Pass again). Bears are active; canister required, not optional. I camped at Rainbow Lake (no established sites, practice Leave No Trace, 200 ft from water) and the wind off the glacier kept mosquitoes down but dropped the temp to 4°C by midnight—I was glad for a 20°F bag. The standard stats: 7.2 mi / 11.6 km loop, ~2,200 ft / 670 m gain, 3.5–5 hours depending on photo stops.Counterclockwise means a steadier climb through silver fir and slide alder, then breaks into heather slopes above timberline where Lake Ann sits cupped in a cirque beneath the Maple Pass ridge. I hit snow patches on the north-facing switchbacks even in late July—microspikes would have been overkill but trekking poles saved my knees on the descent. The ridge walk between Heather Pass and Maple Pass is the payoff: 360° on Glacier Peak, the Mesahchie range, and a strip of azure that is Lake Ann from above. Bugs were brutal in the lower forest (no-see-ums in July), so DEET + a bug net hood were worth the luggage space. A mistake I made: I trusted cell coverage and didn't download the USGS quad offline—there is zero signal past the first mile. Water sources are seasonal; carry 2 L minimum. North Cascade really has many trails that even beginners can challenge and find stunning. The cover photo shows the view at the end of this trail at Doubtful Lake. Calling it Swiss isn’t an exaggeration, right! It’s less than a 3-hour drive away. Any Seattle local who doesn’t go here, I’ll be mad, okay? 🅿️: You can navigate directly to Cascade Pass trailhead. The parking lot is small, and there’s a lot of roadside parking, but if you arrive around noon, drive a bit further instead of parking far away with everyone else. Otherwise, you’ll be covered in dust walking back to your car. The unpaved path at the end of this trail is the longest I’ve driven on so far! When there are many cars, it’s like a sandstorm day! Remember to drive slowly and switch to recirculate air mode early. ⛰️: This trail is rated hard, but don’t be afraid. For us, the difficulty is definitely moderate: You can turn back at Sahale Arm. The first half is a fairly gentle zigzag, with some rocky climbs in the middle. Once you see the lake, it’s pure enjoyment. For laid-back hikers like us, the round trip takes about 6.5–7 hours. 📷 Photo spots: The best photo spots start at the first viewpoint, where you can capture the blooming wildflower valley and the misty snow-capped mountains. Then, after climbing some rocky paths and looking back, you can see a winding green mountain road on one side and snow mountains behind it. After you see the lake, don’t rush forward. There are some trails nearby that get you closer to the lake, allowing you to shoot panoramic views over the trees. A few tips: 1️⃣ Because the morning fog is heavy here, it’s highly recommended not to start too early. You can leave at 8 or 9 AM and start climbing around noon. By the time you reach the top, the fog will clear, and you’ll see the lake water at its clearest under the sun. 2️⃣ If you want to see mountain goats, you must hike all the way to Sahale Arm. Like us, if you get excited and stop at the lake, you’ll only see goat droppings. 3️⃣ Trekking poles are very helpful! This trail is perfect for using trekking poles! You don’t need to scramble with your hands, but there are many switchbacks and rocky paths, so definitely bring trekking poles! 📍: Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm trail

This route is near the German town of Leavenworth, east of Seattle. It’s one of Washington’s most popular top hiking trails and the starting point of the famous The Enchantments trek! Because it’s on the leeward side of the mountains, the climate is dry, and the scenery is a completely different world from the I-90 corridor. The emerald-colored lake water, paired with the towering 3,600-ft granite mountains, is truly breathtaking when standing by the lake😭 Colchuck Lake 📍 Start point: Lake Stuart Trailhead 📏 Stats: 8 miles round trip|2,200 ft elevation gain|about 5 hours 💪 Difficulty: moderate.
