Hey everyone! I'm back with another guide! ✍️ Want to see "Jiuzhaigou-like" emerald waters, colorful forests, and canyon waterfalls, but can't get tickets to Jiuzhaigou or can't stand the crowds? I've found a real hidden gem for you—Guan'egou in Longnan, Gansu! Honestly, the first time I came here, I doubted, "Can this really be as beautiful as Jiuzhaigou?" But ten minutes into the valley, I was proven wrong: the water here is an unreal blue-green, waterfalls crash down directly from the cliffs, and the colorful forests burn layer by layer up the valley. 😎 The most incredible part is that there are hardly any people in the entire valley! You can enjoy many photo spots all to yourself for half an hour. It's also a national forest park and geopark, with an altitude of over 2,000 meters (lower than Jiuzhaigou, so you're less likely to get altitude sickness). The ticket plus sightseeing bus costs just over CNY 100 (compared to nearly CNY 300 for Jiuzhaigou), and accommodation is half the price. I've clearly written out how to handle the shuttle buses, tickets, and how to split your time between the two valleys. Follow this, and you won't go wrong. Tag your travel buddy and let's go! 👇 🔄 [Alternative comparison: Guan'egou vs. Jiuzhaigou] · Landscape: Guan'egou is canyon + lakes + waterfalls + colorful forests (wilder and more primitive) vs. Jiuzhaigou is a plateau lake cluster (more refined) · Ticket booking: Guan'egou tickets can be bought on-site, enter whenever you arrive vs. Jiuzhaigou has limited capacity and requires booking, tickets are hard to get in peak season · Crowds: Guan'egou has less than 1/10th the tourists of Jiuzhaigou, and many photo spots can be enjoyed exclusively · Cost: Guan'egou averages CNY 700–1,200 per person vs. Jiuzhaigou CNY 2,000–3,500 · Altitude: Guan'egou is about 2,000–3,000 meters (relatively friendly) vs. Jiuzhaigou 2,000–3,100 meters · Cons: Guan'egou has average facilities, less fame, and some sections are quite primitive Conclusion: If you're afraid of fighting for tickets, hate crowds, or have a limited budget, choose Guan'egou; if you want the ultimate refined lake cluster, choose Jiuzhaigou. 💧 [Four major areas: A deep dive into how to play] Guan'egou is divided into two valleys, "Guanzhu Valley" and "Eman Valley"—one for water and one for mountains! ✨ Guanzhu Valley (Main valley, for water): The star attraction! Walking along the canyon, you'll find emerald pools, cascading waterfalls, and colorful forests all the way. Core attractions: Guan'e Heavenly Lake, Tongtian Gate, Wupu Gorge, Baizhang Waterfall, and Panlong Gorge. The water color changes from light green to deep emerald in the sunlight, paired with autumn's red and yellow leaves—it's unreal. The valley is about 10 kilometers long, with a mix of wooden boardwalks and sightseeing buses. ✨ Eman Valley (For mountains): More primitive and quiet! Mainly canyons, forests, and streams, with Jiupu Gorge, Crocodile Pool, and distant views of Leigu Snow Mountain. Fewer people, perfect for hiking and zoning out, with plenty of negative oxygen ions. 🌲 ✨ Leigu Mountain area: The highest peak in the valley (altitude 4,154 meters), with snow-capped mountains and rhododendron forests. Those with good stamina can challenge the climb to overlook the entire Guan'egou (requires a guide, know your limits). ⛰️ ✨ Tibetan culture area: There are Tibetan villages at the valley entrance (Luren Village, Yinping Village) where you can experience Tibetan homestays, eat Tibetan food, and watch Guozhuang dances. The villagers are very simple and honest, and prices are reasonable. 🚗 [My 3-day, 2-night, two-valley itinerary] Day 1: Arrive in Dangchang County (about 4 hours by car from Lanzhou, or take a bus/train to Hadapu Station and transfer) → Check in near the valley entrance or in Dangchang County → Afternoon in Guanzhu Valley (Tongtian Gate → Wupu Gorge → Baizhang Waterfall) → Evening at a Tibetan homestay near the valley entrance. Tips: Guanzhu Valley is the highlight, leave at least one full day for it! ⏰ Day 2: Full day deep dive into Guanzhu Valley (Guan'e Heavenly Lake → Panlong Gorge → Colorful forest hiking section) → Afternoon in Eman Valley (Jiupu Gorge, Crocodile Pool) → Return to accommodation. Day 3: Morning in Luren Village/Yinping Village (Tibetan village + Tibetan food) → Afternoon departure. Take it slow and head home satisfied! 🏠 (Those with more time can connect: Guan'egou + Lazikou + Zhagana, the Gannan loop, but this trip focuses on Guan'egou.) 🍜 [Carb lovers rejoice: Food recommendations] ✅ Tibetan-style free-range chicken/cured pork hot pot: A specialty of Dangchang! Free-range chicken or cured pork stewed with wild mushrooms (morels, matsutake), CNY 70–90 per person, warming your heart on the plateau! 🔥 ✅ Potato mash: A Longnan signature! Steamed potatoes are pounded into a dough (pounded on-site with a "thump, thump, thump" sound), served with pickled vegetable soup or chili oil + minced garlic. Chewy and delicious, CNY 15 per person, a must-eat! ✅ Dangchang Codonopsis chicken soup: The area is a "thousand-year medicine town" (Angelica, Codonopsis, and Astragalus are all produced here). Medicinal herbs are used in cooking, making it nourishing and fresh, CNY 80 per person, with a golden broth. ✅ Fern root rice/Tsampa: Fern root (ginseng fruit) is sweet and sticky, sprinkled on rice or served with butter tea, CNY 25 per person, a Tibetan specialty dessert. ✅ Whole roasted lamb/hand-grabbed lamb (for groups): Gannan sheep eat cordyceps and drink mountain spring water, so the meat is tender and completely free of gamey flavor, CNY 70–90 per person, dip in spiced salt to eat. 📸 [Photography guide: Get those social media shots] 1. Guan'e Heavenly Lake: The lake water is as green as jade, surrounded by colorful forests. Have your travel buddy stand on the lakeside boardwalk for a symmetrical reflection shot—it's ethereal! The reflection is most complete in the early morning when there's no wind. 2. Baizhang Waterfall: The waterfall drops directly from the cliff (a drop of several dozen meters). Have your buddy stand on the waterfall viewing platform for a shot from behind, with water mist hitting you—the momentum is stunning (bring a waterproof bag). 3. Wupu Gorge: A series of waterfalls paired with colorful forests. Crouch low to capture the silky texture of the water (slow shutter speed around 1/4 second), you'll need a tripod or stabilizer. 4. Tibetan villages: The colorful prayer flags and Tibetan houses in Luren Village, paired with distant mountains and barley racks. Wear plain or ethnic-style clothing for great cultural shots. 🏨 [Accommodation advice] I recommend staying in Dangchang County (full facilities, standard rooms CNY 150–300, about a 20-minute drive from the valley entrance) or a guesthouse near the valley entrance (CNY 200–350, convenient for early entry into the valley). ⚠️ Prices will rise around National Day for the colorful forest season, so book a week in advance. Don't expect high-end luxury hotels; this place is all about the original ecology. 💡 [Practical tips & ⚠️ pitfall avoidance guide] 1. Season: Late September to mid-October is the colorful forest season (highly recommended, the forests are ablaze with color). Summer is also good for escaping the heat, but some sections are closed in winter. ⏰ 2. Transportation: The closest airport is Longnan Chengxian Airport or Hadapu Railway Station (Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway), then transfer to Dangchang. Driving is most convenient (about 4 hours from Lanzhou, all highways + provincial roads). 3. Tickets: Tickets + sightseeing bus cost just over CNY 100. You must take the sightseeing bus (the valley is very long). Remember to keep your ticket stub (valid for two days)! 4. Gear: The boardwalks in the valley are slippery (lots of waterfall mist), so wear non-slip shoes. The plateau has strong UV rays, so bring sunscreen + warm clothing. Temperature difference between morning and evening is large, a windbreaker is a must. 5. Cash: Some villages and stalls have weak signals and only accept cash, so carry some change (for buying local goods, eating Tibetan food). 6. Anti-cliché: People online say "Guan'egou is a fake Jiuzhaigou," but its beauty is different—Jiuzhaigou wins on its refined lake clusters, while Guan'egou wins on the wildness of its canyon waterfalls and the "private tour" feeling. With the same water color and colorful forests, you can watch quietly for half an hour without being disturbed—a feeling Jiuzhaigou can't give you. ✨ The most unforgettable moment: At 3:00 PM by Guan'e Heavenly Lake, there wasn't a single person around. The lake was as calm as a piece of green glass, perfectly replicating the colorful forests on both banks and the sky—deep green, light green, golden yellow, orange red, all in the water, with layers as distinct as if they were fake. I crouched on the boardwalk, hearing the waterfall roaring in the distance, the wind blowing through the canyon, carrying the scent of water and pine needles, cooling my face. A red leaf swirled and fell into the lake, ripples spreading out in circles, shattering the colorful forest in the water, then slowly piecing it back together. I sat there, thinking of nothing, just watching for 20 minutes—suddenly I felt that the meaning of travel might just be this: no queuing, no fighting for photo spots, just you and the water, staying quiet. 💬 For emerald waters and colorful forests, do you choose the famous Jiuzhaigou or the quiet Guan'egou? "Longtan Yingyue" (Dragon Pool Reflecting the Moon) is one of the eight scenic spots of Cheng County. But what truly makes it legendary is the Eastern Han cliff carving deep in the canyon—"Xixia Song," also known as the Huanglong Stele or "Hui'an Xibiao." Carved in 171 AD (4th year of Jianning, Eastern Han), it is nearly 2,000 years old and is the best-preserved of the three Han odes. The stele is 220cm high and 340cm wide. The leaves across the mountains are dyed red, orange, and golden by the autumn breeze, interwoven with evergreen pines and cypresses, creating a new view with every step. If you are lucky enough to go up the mountain in the early morning, you can encounter a rolling sea of clouds, with peaks floating above the mist like a fairyland. Don't miss the famous "Eighteen Scenes": Cloud-Lying Immortal Bed, Clear Spring Dragon Mouth, and Cliff Stone Rooster. The cliffs and strange rocks paired with colorful forests make every photo a masterpiece 📸. 📜 Local Culture | Millennium-old temples hidden in the mountains This mountain has a very long cultural history, with stone carvings dating back to the Han Dynasty, and temples flourished on the mountain during the Tang and Song Dynasties. In ancient times, scholars often came here to climb and write poetry. "Jifeng Soaring Green" has been the top of the ten most beautiful scenes in Cheng Prefecture since ancient times. Climbing the mountain is not just about seeing the scenery, but also touching a thousand years of time. 🎑 Local Customs | Lively autumn hiking events Every autumn, Jifeng Mountain kicks off its hiking season. It is incredibly popular on weekends and holidays, with hiking enthusiasts gathering to check in and collect stamps; collecting all the check-in points can even earn you a commemorative medal. In the past, whenever there was a temple fair, surrounding villagers would go up the mountain to pray for blessings, and the incense would be burning brightly. Locals love to go up the mountain to forage for mountain goods in the autumn, and the mountains are filled with the atmosphere of a bountiful harvest. 🥘 Local Delicacies | Authentic Longnan farmhouse flavors If you are tired from climbing, don't miss the farmhouses at the foot of the mountain. Potato "jiaotuan" (mashed potato paste) is soft and chewy, and paired with a sour and spicy sauce, it is addictive. The firewood-cooked free-range chicken is raised in the forest, with a rich, meaty flavor. There are also "jiangshui yuyu" (sour fermented vegetable noodles) and stir-fried bacon with mountain bamboo shoots, with ingredients sourced entirely from the mountains. You can eat your fill for 40–50 yuan per person. It is all simple, rustic farmhouse food, and one bite tastes like the local flavor of Longnan. 🥾 Itinerary & Practical Tips Recommended one-day itinerary: Scenic Area Entrance > Emerald Bamboo Corridor > Jifeng Songcui Gate > Yaowang Palace > Observation Deck > Meiluo Peak Main Peak. I spent three days in Longnan, and it was truly breathtaking. Who would have thought that Gansu hides such a secret Jiangnan-style paradise! It shatters the stereotype of the Northwest desert. Surrounded by green mountains and babbling brooks, the landscape is filled with healing greenery, and the air is so fresh it feels like a natural oxygen bar. Without the hustle and bustle of commercialization, it is quiet and peaceful, with gentle, healing scenery. After three days of slow travel, I was completely captivated by the tenderness of this "Jiangnan of Longnan." I have put together a lazy, zero-fatigue 3-day itinerary. The route is smooth and efficient, the pace is relaxed, and the timing fits the actual conditions of the attractions. Beginners can just follow it without overthinking! Travel and accommodation tips For accommodation, prioritize the Wudu District center. Transportation is super convenient, making it easy to take taxis or shared rides to various attractions. There is a food night market right downstairs, so you can handle your travel and dining needs in one stop. Longnan focuses on natural landscapes. The roads are flat throughout, so there is no need for high-intensity hiking. It is easy for both the elderly and children to enjoy, making it perfect for a relaxing vacation. I recommend entering the park around 8:00 AM to avoid the afternoon crowds. Reserving 3 hours for the visit is just right. The entire scenic area has flat trails, so there is no need to struggle with climbing. Along the way, there are over 20 clear blue pools scattered among the mountains, with groups of waterfalls and crystal-clear streams. The forests are lush, and there is pristine scenery everywhere. Be sure to check out Wupu Gorge and Guan'e Heavenly Waterfall. The cascading waterfalls paired with the mountain breeze are refreshing and healing. Every photo you take will look like a landscape masterpiece. Noon: Qiang Village Farmhouse Lunch The area around the scenic spot is full of long-established local farmhouses. The ingredients are fresh and authentic, and the prices are affordable. Try the local home-style mountain dishes; they are light and refreshing, perfect for recharging. Afternoon: E'mangou A niche secret spot connected to Guan'egou. It is less crowded and the scenery is more tranquil. A 2.5-hour visit is just right. The lakes here are stunning. The clear and bright Zedang Lake is nestled among the mountains, with the lake surface reflecting the green hills and clouds, creating a perfect atmosphere. The forest is quiet and secluded, far from the city's noise. A slow walk to enjoy the scenery is extremely relaxing and healing. Evening: Wudu Jiezhou Night Market Return to the city in the evening and head straight to the local hub of life. Try the viral sweet fermented milk tea, Longnan barbecue, and local snacks to experience the authentic street life, perfectly ending a fulfilling day. Day 2: Karst Cave and Grassland Scenery Route | Half Wilderness, Half Romance The style shifts on the second day, unlocking Longnan's diverse scenery. Karst caves + alpine grasslands make for a full experience, with a relaxed pace that doesn't feel rushed. Morning: Wanxiang Cave A large, natural karst cave, rare in the Northwest, known as the "First Wonder of Longnan." A 1.5-hour visit is just right. The cave maintains a cool temperature. The diverse stalactites, combined with light and shadow effects, create fantastic and stunning shapes. The stalagmites and stone curtains have various forms, making you feel like you have stumbled into a mysterious underground dragon palace. The landscape is unique and breathtaking. Noon: Local Specialty Light Meal After visiting the cave, grab a bite nearby. Try local specialties like Longnan cold noodles (mianpi) and potato stir-fry (yangyu jiaotuan). They are affordable, authentic, and great for a quick energy boost. Afternoon: Qianba Pasture A free, niche alpine grassland that is perfect for relaxing and strolling. I recommend going after 3:00 PM when the light is soft and great for photos. The altitude is comfortable, and the grassland is open and flat. You can see green grass everywhere, with sheep and cattle grazing leisurely. The evening breeze is gentle, and the view is excellent. No need to rush to check in; just sit on the grass, daydream, walk around, and take photos to immerse yourself in the romance of the wilderness. Evening: Riverside Walk Take a walk along the river in the evening breeze, watching the sunset glow cover the river surface. It is gentle and cozy, washing away the fatigue of the whole day. The landscape scenery and human history are perfectly integrated, allowing you to see healing landscapes while feeling the ancient cultural charm. Afternoon: Bikou Ancient Town A gentle water town at the junction of Shaanxi, Gansu, and Sichuan. It is not very commercialized and retains the most simple and rustic appearance of an ancient town. The bluestone streets are simple and quiet, with white walls and black tiles built along the water. Stroll slowly through the alleys, watch the flowing water, and feel the gentle atmosphere of this niche water town. After a simple walk, eat, and take photos, you can easily head back. Summary of Must-Eat Foods in Longnan Local specialties that you absolutely won't regret trying—a carb lover's dream! Sweet fermented milk tea, potato stir-fry (yangyu jiaotuan), Longnan cold noodles (mianpi), cured meat, firewood chicken, and oil cakes with vegetables. The ingredients are all local mountain flavors, affordable and generous in portion. Any old shop you walk into will be delicious. I was truly touched by the gentleness of Longnan! It has both the vastness of the Northwest and the tenderness of Jiangnan. The green mountains and clear waters heal the heart, and the local life is gentle and soothing. The pace is relaxed, the scenery is beautiful, the crowds are few, and the cost is affordable. If you want to find a place to clear your mind and relax, choosing Longnan is definitely the right decision!

Longnan is beautiful, but I really don't recommend visiting in September–October. Take my advice and don't force it!! Don't be fooled by the 9-grid collages of "Guangegou, the mini-Jiuzhaigou," "the impossibly blue Wenxian Tianchi," "Kangxian Yangba tea gardens," "sipping tea in Bikou Ancient Town," "the Han Dynasty cliff carvings at Xixiasong," and "Dangchang's colorful forests meeting snow-capped peaks." Longnan is a patchwork of "Wudu Karst Caves + Dangchang Guangegou + Kangxian Yangba + Wenxian Tianchi/Bikou + Chengxian Xixiasong + Huixian Liangdang Red Qinling southern slopes." Visiting in September–October is a hardcore challenge: "September autumn rain lottery + lingering geological disaster risks," "October National Day crowds in mountain valleys," "a narrow window for autumn colors," and "discouraging mountain roads between counties." 🚫 Why I advise you not to force a trip in September–October 1️⃣ September isn't crisp and clear; it's "West China autumn rain season" Longnan's September forecast is a rotation of light rain, overcast skies, and showers: mid-to-late September highs of 21–27°C and lows of 12–18°C, with 70–80% humidity. Sunny mornings, afternoon fog, and evening drizzle are the norm. If you plan to "take photos at Guangegou in the morning, visit Wenxian Tianchi at noon, and go to Yangba Meiyuangou in the afternoon," and hit an autumn rain: the boardwalks in the valley will be slippery, Tianchi will turn into milky soup, and fog will smother the tea mountains in Yangba, cutting your photo opportunities in half. Guangegou itself states "late September to late October is for viewing autumn colors," but visiting in early September means the leaves aren't green, aren't yellow, and the rain is already here. 2️⃣ May–October is peak season for geological disasters; mountain areas are no joke Official sources in Longnan list the "May–October main flood season" as a high-risk period for geological disasters. The areas along the Bailong River, Baishui River, and Xihan River, as well as G212, the Dangchang–Wudu road, the Kangxian–Yangba road, and the riverside roads in Wenxian are key areas to watch. Guangegou, Leigu Mountain, E'man Valley, the Jiupanshan section of G212, and the Maoyushan ridge on the Bailin Road are prone to collapses, landslides, flash floods, and mudslides after rain. You might think "there are no more rainstorms in autumn," but while autumn rain isn't heavy, it softens the mountains. Small rocks falling near boardwalks, muddy river water, and temporary scenic area closures are scarier than "not getting photos of colorful forests." 3️⃣ During National Day: Guangegou has capacity limits, Dangchang homestay prices spike, and the Gansu-Sichuan-Qinghai route is packed Guangegou has a maximum capacity of 30,000 people. During National Day, it operates on a "reservation + capacity limit + diversion" system. If you don't book tickets 7 days in advance, you might be turned away at the gate. Longnan is usually a niche destination, but with the "Gannan + Longnan + Jiuzhaigou" self-driving groups all converging during National Day, the Hadapu—Dangchang—Guangegou—Wenxian—Jiuzhaigou route gets traffic jams on mountain roads that are more frustrating than city highways. You pay peak-season prices for accommodation, but while staying in Dangchang/Wudu/Wenxian, you're stuck with Golden Week traffic, and if it rains in the mountains, you can't even leave. 4️⃣ Attractions are too scattered; no car = wasting your vacation on county roads and mountain highways Wudu (Wanxiang Cave) → Dangchang (Guangegou) is 2+ hours, → Kangxian Yangba is 3+ hours, → Wenxian Tianchi/Bikou is another 2–3 hours, → Chengxian Xixiasong, → Liangdang Yunping is another day. County buses are infrequent and stop early. Exploring Longnan purely by public transport means leaving in the morning, arriving at noon, taking photos for 30 minutes, and heading back to the city after dark. Novice drivers on G212, the Bailin Road, and the Kangxian Daqing Road: there are many curves, oncoming traffic, rain and fog, and spotty signals. If you don't have motion sickness medicine, you're halfway to being incapacitated. 5️⃣ The window for autumn colors is narrow; coming too early or too late is awkward · Guangegou colorful forests at their peak: mid-to-late October, with the best views of autumn snow on Leigu Mountain. · Wenxian Tianchi blue water + colorful forests: late September to mid-October. · Kangxian Yangba: In autumn, the tea gardens turn deep green, not a "sea of flowers." You need to visit in April–May to see mountain flowers. · Xixiasong red leaves: only at their best in late October. Visiting in early September: The colorful forests haven't changed color, but the autumn rain has already started. Visiting Oct 1–7: The crowds arrive first, but the autumn colors aren't full. Visiting in late October: It's beautiful, but a little later, high altitudes will have frost, and some mountain village homestays will start closing for the season. 6️⃣ The temperature difference is extreme; your outfit is the easiest thing to get wrong The temperature difference in the mountains of Guangegou can exceed 15°C. It's sunny at noon and cool in the morning and evening. Taking the cable car up to the alpine meadows on Leigu Mountain is like changing seasons. Wearing a camisole to take photos of "Longnan's mini-Jiuzhaigou" means you'll look like a fairy at noon, be shivering by evening, and be too frozen to press the shutter on the mountain. Wanxiang Cave has a constant temperature of around 14°C. It feels like air conditioning in the summer, but you'll be shivering if you don't wear a light jacket in the autumn. 7️⃣ The food is good, but don't get scammed by "mountain delicacies" Longnan has very authentic food: Wudu potato mash, Hadapu Red Army jelly noodles, Chengxian noodle soup, Kangxian jar tea, Wenxian Bikou green tea, Dangchang Red Army flatbread, and Liangdang wolfberry honey. However, the "wild mushroom hot pot," "mountain delicacy feasts," and "gastrodia and panax soup" at the entrances to scenic areas are overpriced. Roadside "fresh-caught Tianchi fish" often doesn't list weight or price. If it's your first time here, it's easy to get ripped off because of the "mountain filter." 📅 When is the right time? ✅ Sept 25–Oct 12: The golden period for autumn scenery in Longnan. Temperatures are 11–19°C, the colorful forests are just starting to spread, and the water in Tianchi is clear, but you must keep an eye on weather warnings. ✅ April–May: Kangxian tea gardens are green, Bikou has rapeseed flowers, Yangba isn't stuffy, and Guangegou has plenty of water that isn't frozen. This is the most reliable time for a first visit. ✅ June: Guangegou waterfalls are full, and there are fewer people than during summer vacation. Choose this if you like water scenery. ❌ Early to mid-September: Lots of autumn rain, colorful forests aren't full, and geological disaster warnings may still be yellow. ❌ Oct 1–7: Guangegou has capacity limits, the Gansu-Sichuan route is crowded, and you might get stuck in the mountains if it rains. ❌ After Oct 25: High altitudes have frost, some homestays close, and any later, you're looking at winter scenery. 🚨 How to save yourself if you insist on going in September–October · If it's your first time, don't plan a big loop of "Wudu + Dangchang + Kangxian + Wenxian + Chengxian + Liangdang." Choose either "Guangegou + Wudu Wanxiang Cave (2 days)" or "Wenxian Tianchi + Bikou + Kangxian Yangba (2 days)." · If visiting in September: Enter the mountains in the morning, don't plan outdoor canyon activities after 2:00 PM, set aside a full day for Leigu Mountain, and don't schedule Tianchi for a rainy day. · Check "Longnan Weather + Gansu Geological Disaster Warning + Guangegou Mini-program" every day before you leave. If there is a yellow warning or higher, don't enter the mountains, don't go to river beaches, and don't stay in wild homestays at the valley entrance. · Book Guangegou 7 days in advance. Buy the ticket + sightseeing bus package. The Leigu Mountain cable car is 120 one-way. Don't trust anyone at the entrance claiming "no reservation needed, fast entry." · Drive on the main G75/G212 roads. Don't drive at night, don't take shortcuts, and don't park on the side of the Bailong River or Xihan River to take photos. · Clothing: Quick-dry long sleeves + fleece + light down jacket + windbreaker + non-slip shoes. A raincoat is more useful than an umbrella. Don't wear a long Hanfu skirt to climb the Guanzhugou boardwalk. · Food: Eat on Jianshe Road/Old City back alleys in Wudu, Hadapu Red Army Street, Chengxian county town, or Wangba/Changba farmhouses in Kangxian. Don't order the "deluxe mountain delicacy hot pot." It's not that Longnan isn't good; it's that visiting in September–October means gambling on autumn rain, geological disaster warnings, fog-free views at Guangegou, clear water at Tianchi, no capacity limits during National Day, and no rockfalls on mountain roads. Wait for the cold front at the end of September to hit, for the colorful forests to spread from the foot of the mountain to the waist, and for the first snow to fall on the top of Leigu Mountain before you come—that's when "Longnan is willing to slowly hand you the wildest autumn."🍁🏔️

Who says Gansu is just loess plateaus? In September, the mountains of Longnan are covered in red leaves, looking like an overturned palette 🎨. You have to see it to believe it—the title "Jiangnan of the Long region" is no exaggeration! Budget reference About 1,200–1,500 yuan per person for a 3-day, 2-night trip 💰. Admission for Guan'egou is 150 yuan (includes sightseeing bus + insurance), Wanxiang Cave is about 100 yuan, Xixiasong is about 40 yuan, and Wanxia Lake is free. Accommodation in Dangchang County is 150–250 yuan/night, and chain hotels in Wudu District are 120–200 yuan/night. Food, accommodation, and transportation are all affordable, offering great value. Transportation High-speed rail goes directly to Longnan Station or Hadapu Station 🚄. Attractions are far apart, so chartering a car for 3–4 people is the most convenient option, averaging 300–400 yuan per day. Self-driving is also an option; it takes about 4.5 hours via the Lanhai Expressway to Dangchang, but there are many winding mountain roads, so beginners should be cautious. Must-visit attractions 🍂 Guan'egou A 5A scenic area and the crown jewel of Longnan! The colorful forest season from September to October is breathtaking. The 180-meter-high Guan'e Waterfall cascades down through the red leaves, and 13 emerald lakes are nestled in the valley—every photo looks like a wallpaper. It is recommended to set aside a full day; explore Guanzhu Valley for waterfalls and E'man Valley for alpine lakes separately. 🕳️ Wanxiang Cave It is not called the "No. 1 Cave in Northern China" for nothing. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 14°C, and the stalactites look like an underground galaxy under the lights ✨. It is still hot outside in September, so you will cool down instantly upon entering—bring a light jacket. 📜 Xixiasong Scenic Area Featuring Eastern Han Dynasty cliff inscriptions with 1,800 years of history. The canyon has babbling streams, and in late October, the red leaves cover the hillsides. With ancient stone tablets set against the autumn colors, every photo looks like an ink wash painting. 🌅 Wanxia Lake Free! Go in the evening to see the sky's orange-red sunset reflected on the lake, with overlapping silhouettes of mountains. It is so quiet you can only hear the wind. Cycling around the lake or just sitting and daydreaming is incredibly healing. Itinerary Day 1: High-speed rail to Longnan → Wanxiang Cave (2–3h) → Explore Wudu Night Market for food Day 2: Charter a car to Dangchang → Full-day deep tour of Guan'egou → Stay in Dangchang County Day 3: Chengxian Xixiasong (half day) → Xihe Wanxia Lake for sunset → Return Food You must try potato jiaotuan! Potatoes are pounded hundreds of times and drizzled with a sour and spicy sauce—it is incredibly chewy and delicious 🤤. Start your morning with a bowl of "can tea" to warm your stomach, paired with a Xihe guokui (flatbread) that is crispy enough to crumble. In the evening, have a Longnan hot pot—lamb shabu-shabu in a copper pot over charcoal—it will warm you up completely in autumn. Don't miss the Li County hot noodles either; they are fragrant, spicy, soft, and chewy, and you can get full for 10 yuan.

I get it! I visited four counties in three days and changed hotels every night. The scenery was top-tier. Looking back at my photos, I want to go again, but I definitely won't be going back anytime soon. ✨ Trip highlights (it really is beautiful) Guan'egou—Longnan's only 5A scenic area, known as the "Little Jiuzhaigou of Longnan." The first section features 15 lakes scattered like emeralds, while the latter section has primeval forests and waterfalls. The gentle mist of the Guan'e Heavenly Waterfall over the lens is something you have to experience to believe. Admission is 150, including the sightseeing bus, and is valid for two days. Wanxiang Cave—an "underground palace" formed 250 million years ago. The temperature inside is a constant 16–18°C, making it incredibly refreshing in summer. The stalactites are diverse, and lighting up the "Pillar of Heaven" with your phone looks amazing. Admission is 80. Wenxian Tianchi—one of China's four great heavenly lakes, with water as green as emerald. It's known as a "heavenly lake on earth." Admission is 50 + 30 for the shuttle. Xixia Song—a quiet canyon with babbling brooks, home to the cliff inscriptions of the "Three Eulogies," one of the masterpieces of Han clerical script. After the rain, the mist swirls around, creating a perfect atmosphere. 🗺️ Three days and two nights (don't follow my rushed itinerary) Day 1: High-speed train to Longnan Station > Taxi to Wanxiang Cave (15 mins from the city center) > Evening at Jiezhou Night Market, try the potato jiaotuan and barbecue Day 2: Early morning chartered car to Guan'egou (120 yuan/day) > Hike in Guanzhugou to see the waterfalls > Take photos of the reflection at Zedang Lake in E'mangou > Stay in Dangchang County Day 3: Wenxian Tianchi > Return trip in the afternoon 🍜 Food recommendations Potato jiaotuan (5–8 yuan, a must-try, chewy and delicious), the "dream combo" of cold noodles + tofu pudding, tianpeizi (a sweet drink that's great for cutting through grease), and Mou Laosan Barbecue at Jiezhou Night Market. Prices in Longnan are amazing; you can eat your fill for 50 yuan per person. ⚠️ Travel tips The attractions are very spread out. Guan'egou is in Dangchang, Wanxiang Cave is in Wudu, and Tianchi is in Wenxian, so traveling between counties is the norm. If you aren't driving, charter a car; local drivers charge 300–500 yuan/day. Guan'egou has a high altitude and large temperature differences, so bring a light jacket. It's 18°C inside Wanxiang Cave, so bring a jacket to stay warm. There are many mountain roads, so motion sickness medicine is a must. The total cost for three days is around 1,500 per person

Transportation 🚗 If you're traveling to Longnan from out of town, you can arrive at Longnan Station first, then rent a car or drive based on your itinerary. The four attractions are located in different counties, so driving is more convenient if you want to visit them all in one trip. You'll see canyons, forests, waterfalls, and lakes along the way. From September–October, you can even see the mountains turning colorful. If you have the energy, set aside at least half a day to explore slowly. 2. Wanxiang Cave 🪨 This natural karst cave is fascinating. It's cool year-round, and the stalactites come in various shapes. Day 3: Guan'egou > Xixia Song > Return Continue enjoying the autumn colors in the morning, head to Xixia Song in the afternoon, and then return. Food 🍜 When you get to Longnan, don't just focus on taking photos of the scenery. Try the potato paste (yangyu jiaotuan), Longnan cured meat, stir-fried bracken with cured meat, and jar wine. The potato paste is especially soft, chewy, and delicious when paired with sour and spicy seasonings—it's quite addictive 😋 September–October is recommended, as the weather gets significantly colder in November. Bring a jacket and try to wear comfortable, non-slip shoes. The most comfortable way to enjoy this trip is: don't rush, take your time looking at the mountains, and enjoy your meals slowly 🍂

Who gets it! Gansu actually hides a "Little Jiangnan" 🌿 Longnan, located south of the Qinling Mountains at the junction of Gansu, Shaanxi, and Sichuan, is full of green waters and blue mountains. The average temperature in summer is just over 20°C (68°F), making air conditioning unnecessary. Trip highlights (key points) Guan'egou | A national 5A-level scenic area, known as the "Little Jiuzhaigou of Longnan." It is divided into two main areas: Guanzhu Valley and E'man Valley. You can see canyon waterfalls, emerald lakes, and primeval forests all at once. Take the Leigu Mountain cable car for a panoramic view, and you can even drink coffee and eat hot pot at the summit. Wanxiang Cave | The "No. 1 Cave in China," a karst cave formed over hundreds of millions of years. The temperature inside remains a constant 14–16°C (57–61°F) year-round, making it instantly refreshing in summer. The stalactites are diverse in shape, and the walking paths are flat and easy. Wenxian Tianchi | An alpine barrier lake with water as blue as a gemstone. Whether you hike the lakeside boardwalk or take a boat tour, the scenery is stunning. Xixia Song | One of the "Three Han Eulogies" of cliff carvings from the Eastern Han Dynasty. The canyon streams paired with thousand-year-old clerical script create a perfect ancient atmosphere. Itinerary (3-day relaxed version) Day 1: Arrive in Wudu → Wanxiang Cave (remember to bring a light jacket) → Explore the Jiezhou Night Market in the evening, try the cold noodles and mashed potato paste (yangyu jiaotuan). Day 2: Full day at Guan'egou (Guanzhu Valley for waterfalls + E'man Valley for lakes; sightseeing buses + cable cars save a lot of energy). Day 3: Xixia Song in Chengxian → If you have time, you can go to Jifeng Mountain for a hike and a view from the top. Food quick guide Mashed potato paste (yangyu jiaotuan) (a dense texture made by pounding, perfect with sour and spicy sauce), tofu pudding noodles (tender tofu + chewy noodles), Wudu rice noodles/cold noodles (tossed in chili oil, fragrant but not dry), Huixian fried cakes (crispy outside, soft inside). Just walk into any street-side shop; the flavors are all authentic. Travel tips Transportation: High-speed rail goes directly to Longnan Station (Wudu). Attractions are scattered, so self-driving is highly recommended. Clothing: There is a large temperature difference between day and night, so a light jacket is a must. It's around 10-something degrees inside Wanxiang Cave, so definitely bring a jacket. Non-slip: The paths in the cave and canyon are damp, so wear non-slip flat shoes. Rain gear: The weather in the mountains is changeable, so carry a folding umbrella. Offline maps: Signal is weak in some mountainous areas, so download them in advance. "If I had known about Longnan, why would I need to go to Jiangnan?" Save this guide and set off 🚗

Reflections after visiting Longnan: The scenery is stunning, but the travel experience is truly discouraging. To be honest: Longnan's landscapes are truly top-tier. Guan'egou, the "Little Jiuzhaigou," features clear waters, deep pools, and colorful forests in the canyons that create an incredible atmosphere. Wanxiang Cave is a stunning karst wonder, Hadapu holds deep historical roots, and the small towns along the Jialing River are full of local life and authentic Longnan snacks. With its lush green mountains and gentle waters, it lacks the desolation of the Northwest deserts and enjoys a mild, comfortable climate. In terms of scenery alone, it is absolutely worth seeing. However, after completing the trip, I've decided not to return anytime soon. Here are the exhausting drawbacks. 🌿 Popular attractions: Guan'egou The scenery is impeccable, with cascading streams and waterfalls, high forest coverage, and a great place to escape the heat. But the downsides are glaring. The scenic area shuttle bus is split into segments, requiring transfers back and forth, with queues at every stop. It's very deep, requiring walking the entire way, with boardwalks stretching for kilometers—it's physically demanding for the elderly and children. During holidays, parking requires driving far away to find a spot, and the entrance is severely congested. Homestays are clustered around, with prices doubling during holidays, yet the supporting facilities can't keep up. Wanxiang Cave The cave is massive with diverse stalactite formations and a constant temperature that's warm in winter and cool in summer. The downside is the fixed, one-way tour route; you must follow the crowd the entire time and cannot turn back. During peak season, tour groups come one after another, making it crowded and difficult to take quiet photos. The vendors around the cave entrance are disorganized, and it's easy to fall into traps with overpriced local specialties. Yangba Meiyuangou The pristine atmosphere is incredible, with quiet streams and dense vegetation. The biggest problem: it's very far away. Driving from the city takes most of the day, and the route is full of mountain curves and winding roads, which can easily cause motion sickness. Public transportation is extremely inconvenient; there are no direct buses, so you have to charter a car or drive yourself. The scenic area is underdeveloped, with few supply points and very limited food and drink options. 📍 Major transportation pain points This is the most discouraging aspect. Longnan is mountainous, and attractions across the counties are extremely scattered. Guan'egou, Wanxiang Cave, Meiyuangou, and Xixiasong are far apart, and there are no convenient direct shuttles between them. Traveling from the city to each scenic area involves long-distance buses with few departures and long travel times, wasting most of your time on the road. It's impossible to get around without a car, and driving requires long hours on winding mountain roads with many curves and frequent heavy truck traffic, which is very tiring. For out-of-town tourists, the combined costs of car rental, fuel, and tolls cause travel expenses to skyrocket. 🏨 Accommodation and town facilities Facilities in the Wudu urban area are decent, but once you head to the surrounding scenic towns, there's a huge drop-off. During peak season, homestays and hotels have outrageous price hikes, and the hygiene of small inns is inconsistent. Many scenic towns have few food delivery options, small supermarkets, and less complete supplies than the city. There is almost no evening entertainment, so you have to return to your accommodation early after visiting the attractions. In some mountain sections, the signal is spotty at night, and navigation occasionally fails. 🍜 Food summary Mianpi (cold noodles), jiaotuan (starchy paste), potato jiaotuan, cured pork ribs, and wild mountain vegetables are very authentic and offer good value. The limitation is that the food is concentrated in the Wudu urban area; dining options around the scenic areas are limited, mostly consisting of homogeneous farm-style restaurants with average taste and serious price gouging. ⚠️ Sincere travel tips & summary of reasons to reconsider 1. Travel time far outweighs the joy of sightseeing. Most of the trip is wasted on driving through mountains; visiting one attraction a day is exhausting, and the itinerary is extremely tight. 2. Public transportation is weak. It's hard to get around without being able to drive yourself, and chartering a car makes you prone to being overcharged with little room for negotiation. 3. Scenic area facilities are polarized. Large scenic areas have complicated transfers and queues, while niche, pristine spots lack food, drink, and rest facilities. 4. Serious price gouging during peak season; accommodation, farm-style restaurants, and parking fees all increase, significantly lowering the value for money. 5. Mountain weather is changeable; sudden rain showers are common, some forest boardwalks become slippery, and driving on mountain roads in the rain increases risks. Longnan is a landscape paradise for driving enthusiasts, suitable only for those with plenty of time, who are skilled at mountain driving, and enjoy slow-paced travel. If you are on a short trip, don't want to drive long distances, or prefer convenient and relaxing travel, I honestly don't recommend making a special trip. The scenery is great, but the exhaustion from the travel makes me not want to come a second time.

It's full of authentic Jiangnan charm and perfect for a slow-paced few days. 7️⃣ Zhongwei Experience the vast desert and a romantic galaxy all in one place. The cool early autumn breeze is perfect for stargazing, and you won't want to miss the campfire barbecue. 8️⃣ Chenzhou A summer retreat near the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The alpine grasslands at Yangtian Lake stay at a constant 19°C—perfect for photos in a white dress. The mist over Little Dongjiang at Dongjiang Lake is like a fairyland, and the red Danxia rocks and green waters of Gaoyiling are breathtaking. Wake up at 6:00 AM to catch the fisherman casting his net, then enjoy a hot bowl of fresh pork rice noodles. It's an easy 1.5-hour high-speed train ride for a weekend trip, and traveling off-peak makes the experience even better.

It is the best-preserved among the three. The full text has 385 characters in Han clerical script, each about 9–10 cm tall, with square structure and flowing strokes, recognized as a treasure in the calligraphy world. Before taking my kids to Longnan this time, I read a lot of guides. After actually going, I felt some of them weren't quite right, so I'm sharing my real experience! Moms who want to take their kids to Longnan should definitely check out this post. If you plan ahead, you can avoid a lot of pitfalls!! · 📍 Must-visit attractions in Longnan: 🏔️ Xixia Song: Eastern Han Dynasty clerical script cliff carvings + Yuqiao Gorge stream trekking + Dongyan Coffee. It's 10°C cooler in the canyon than in the city, and kids can take off their shoes and play in the water. 🌄 Jifeng Mountain: The "Little Zhangjiajie" of Longnan, featuring Danxia landforms, sea of clouds, sunrise, and ancient temples. But take note‼️ It's a full hike with no cable cars or ropeways. You have to leave at 3:00–4:00 AM to catch the sunrise, so it's really not recommended if you're bringing small children!! 🌊 Wenxian Tianchi: The "Jiuzhaigou of Gansu," with 7 alpine lakes strung together. Free admission for 2026 summer middle and high school graduates + half-price for 2 parents. Very family-friendly. 🌿 Qianba Pasture: Alpine meadows accessible by car. Kids can run wild and roll around on the grass. 🏛️ Dugong Temple: A free attraction, a shrine dedicated to the poet Du Fu who lived in Chengxian. There's a huge field of yellow, purple, and pink flowers at the entrance. 🕳️ Wudu Wanxiang Cave: Stalactites + a constant temperature of 18°C. It feels like air conditioning inside during the summer, and kids will be mesmerized by the stalactites in the cave. · 🚗 My 5-day Longnan itinerary Day 1 🚄 High-speed train to Longnan Station — Taxi to Chengxian — Walk along the Qingni River — Eat cold noodles and Guanguan tea (pot tea) on the Old Street Day 2 🚗 Xixia Song — Yuqiao Gorge stream trekking — Dongyan Coffee — Dugong Temple flower fields Day 3 🚗 Self-drive to Qianba Pasture — Return to Chengxian Old Street for a night tour Day 4 🚗 Chengxian → Wenxian Tianchi — Tielou Tibetan Village — Watch the Chigezhou Tibetan Nuo dance Day 5 🚗 Dangchang Guan'egou "Little Jiuzhaigou of Longnan" — Return trip · Some honest, heartfelt advice 1️⃣ Although Longnan has Chengzhou Airport ✈️, flights are limited. I recommend taking the high-speed train to Longnan Station first (direct from Lanzhou 2 hours/Tianshui 2 hours/Chongqing 4 hours/Chengdu 5 hours), then taking a taxi to Chengxian (about 1 hour). You can also drive from Lanzhou; the road conditions are good and the scenery along the way is beautiful. 2️⃣ Be sure to check the official announcement for Wenxian Tianchi's free admission policy in advance so you don't get caught off guard at the entrance for forgetting your documents. 3️⃣ For Xixia Song, I recommend buying a package ticket (admission + stream trekking experience) so the kids can have a blast. The boardwalks can be mossy, so wear non-slip shoes. 4️⃣ The temperature difference between day and night in the Longnan mountains is significant. Use the "onion layering" method for kids: base layer + sweatshirt + windbreaker, so you can add or remove layers easily to keep them from catching a cold. 5️⃣ Attractions in Chengxian are spread out, so I recommend renting a car for a self-drive trip; taxis are hard to find in the city. For food, I highly recommend the handmade cold noodles on the Old Street, potato mash (yangyu jiaotuan), grilled potato skewers, and Guanguan tea with walnut cakes.
