In August in Zhangye, mornings and evenings are much cooler, days are sunny but dry, and it feels far more comfortable than eastern cities at the same latitude. ⏰ The best time to enter the Danxia is 7:00 AM, when the light hits the colored hills at an angle and the red and yellow stripes look as if someone painted them stroke by stroke. Sightseeing buses stop at Viewpoint 1 first; there aren't many steps, so you can push a stroller. Viewpoint 4 is the most photogenic but also the most crowded, so see 2 and 3 first and then come back. When it heats up at noon, hide out in Zhangye Grand Buddha Temple—the interior is very cool. The reclining Buddha is 34.5 meters long, and a child standing at its feet looks tiny. ⚠️ No photos are allowed inside the Great Buddha hall. Staff watch closely, so don't take out your phone. In the afternoon, go to Mati Temple, tucked at the foot of the Qilian Mountains. The air-conditioning is strong; the museum's treasures, like the Jiahu bone flute and the lotus-and-crane spouted pot, make kids ask "can you play this?" Audio guides rent for CNY 20 and are very engaging. In the afternoon head to Xiliu Lake Park—thick shade, breezes by the lake, lay out a picnic mat and you can sit all afternoon. There are fish in the lake; kids can feed them bread and play for an hour. ⚠️ Weekends are crowded; visit on a weekday. Zhenwei Water City is a newly built ancient-style street area from the last two years—free entry, lots of snacks but prices are higher. A serving of liangpi costs CNY 15, CNY 5 more than outside. Xingkai Lake is China's largest border lake; the water is so clear you can see the bottom, the beach is gentle, and kids can safely wade barefoot. ⏰ 9:00–11:00 AM is the best time to play in the water; the temperature is just right. Don't go at noon; it's scorching, the colors look washed out, and photos will look like faded posters. At the Jiaxian section of the Yellow River, Xianglu Temple stands on a cliff by the shore, with the Yellow River surging beneath your feet. The light is best after 5:00 PM when the river surface glitters with gold. It's windy, so hold onto your phone. There's no admission fee, but parking costs CNY 10. Locals sell red dates by the roadside for CNY 10 a bag—they're genuinely sweet. After 6:00 PM, there are fewer tourists, and you can hear the wind chimes tinkling while Dai elders walk around the pagoda chanting sutras. Take off your shoes to enter; the floor is warmed by the sun and feels comfortable underfoot. Going up from the back, the forest canopy covers the sky. The steps are a bit steep, but if you have average fitness, you can reach the Zhongtai platform in two hours. The Imperial City and Leisheng Peak at the top offer wide views, where you can see the Jing River winding around the mountain. If you want to save energy, take the cable car; it's CNY 50 one-way and takes five minutes to reach the Zhongtai platform. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain, there are vendors selling Heluo noodles for CNY 10 a bowl—buckwheat noodles with sour soup, which will give you energy for the climb. ⚠️ The temples on the mountain close at 5:00 PM, so go up early if you want to see the architecture. In the evening, when the bell tolls from the temple, you'll truly understand the line "the midnight bell reaches the passenger boat." ⚠️ Don't donate incense money randomly in the temple; just give what you feel is appropriate. Admission to the Humble Administrator's Garden is CNY 80, with at least an hour-long queue in peak season. Buy two jin and take them to a local food stall to be cooked; the processing fee is CNY 15, and they are so fresh and sweet you don't even need dipping sauce. My impression of this Chengde trip is that it doesn't have the pressure of "must quickly take photos and check in" like many other cities. When kids stand under the giant Buddha in Cave 20, looking up, their mouths just stay open. I recommend entering at 8:30 AM when the light hits the Buddha’s face at an angle, making the stone-carved robes look like they’re fluttering in the wind. 🎫 Book tickets in advance on the official account. In peak season, waiting in line under the sun can be brutal. In the afternoon, visit the Hanging Temple. Don’t rush up; first, have the kids look up from the valley floor to see the whole temple. The wooden beams are embedded in the cliff like building blocks. The stairs are narrow, so hold hands with kids around 5 or 6 years old, but that’s the most exciting part for them. ⚠️ Parents afraid of heights don’t push it—wait in the pavilion below and let others take the kids up. I don’t recommend hiking Hengshan with little kids. Take the cable car up, walk halfway to enjoy the pine waves, then turn back. It’s windy, so bring a light jacket even in July. 🍜 After descending, head to the city for knife-cut noodles. Order the “second thin” noodles with a spoonful of minced meat sauce. Kids can eat two bowls. 02 Chengde | Hebei The Mountain Resort isn’t for sightseeing but for kids to run around. The lawn by the lake in the late afternoon has long shadows. Kids chase their shadows while you relax in the shade watching clouds. This is the essence of stress-free parenting. 🚣 Rent a rowboat and float on the lake for half an hour—it’s more fun than riding the electric cart. Jinshanling Great Wall is much less crowded than Badaling but has steep steps. Kids need to be carried for some parts. I suggest walking only the west section to General’s Tower, a 2-hour round trip with plenty of scenery. ⚠️ Don’t climb the wild Great Wall. The barbed wire side is a cliff. Don’t let kids get curious. 🍜 Meals in Chengde are cheap. In the old town, try “Lao San Yang Tang” flatbread with meat. Kids will get messy but love it. Stay at a guesthouse near the Mountain Resort. The window overlooks Wulie River, and the breeze keeps it cool without air conditioning. 03 Ngari Prefecture | Tibet Taking kids to Ngari sounds crazy, but the area at the foot of Mount Kailash is truly cool and breathtaking. But the starry sky that night is something city kids will never see. 04 Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan Yuanyang rice terraces aren’t seasonal. Summer is perfect—the rice is dark green and layered like matcha mille crepe. 📍 Reserve a spot at Duoyishu viewing platform by 6:30 AM. The sunrise dyes the water orange-red. Kids can crouch and catch them all afternoon, soaking wet but happy. 📍 Navigate to “Xiaoyue Bay” deep inside the park. It’s less crowded, with fine sand and gentle waves. At Yalong Bay public beach, go after 4:30 PM when the sun isn’t harsh and the sand isn’t hot. Chengbi Lake is better for boating. Rent a pedal boat for 40 minutes at 50 yuan. The lake is so quiet you only hear the paddle. ⏰ After 4 PM, the water’s reflection isn’t harsh.
