#easytravelpost Mawsmai Cave in Meghalaya is the touristy one near Cherrapunjee, but the mossy limestone forest trail above the cave entrance—on the way to the Riwai Living Root Bridge—is where the real green lives. I flew to Guwahati, took a shared sumo to Shillong (3 hrs, 400 INR, cash), then a bus to Sohra/Cherrapunjee (2 hrs, 80 INR). From Sohra market, a walk of 20 min or a shared taxi (50 INR) gets you to the Mawsmai cave gate. Entry: 20 INR for the cave, 10 INR for the eco-park trail above, cash only—no card readers in the village. The Riwai root bridge is a separate 30 INR entry (village fund), 2 km further down the same road. The mossy section is the limestone cliff edge above the cave: Elaeocarpus and Ficus growing directly out of rock, Pterobryum moss on every drip-line, and a carpet of Impatiens flowers in the monsoon (Jun–Sep). I went in November (post-monsoon)—the moss was still wet from the 11,000 mm annual rainfall. I wore trail-runners; the limestone steps are slick as glass when wet—the local Khasi vendors sell jooti (rubber sandals) for 150 INR at the gate, better grip than any trail shoe. Mistake: I went at noon—sun directly overhead, the limestone reflected glare, and the moss looked grey. Go at 3 p.m. when the sun angles under the cliff lip and the green glows. Second mistake: I brought a tripod for cave shots—the cave is narrow, 2 people wide, tripod is a nuisance. Handheld with a fast lens works. Third: I didn't bring 100 INR cash for the Khasi woman selling kwai (betel nut) and oranges at the trailhead—she's the one who points you to the unmarked upper path. Buy in Sohra: a 60 INR plate of jadoh (Khasi rice with pork liver) at the market, not the 350 INR "cave view" restaurant. Gear: a 200 INR plastic poncho from the Shillong Police Bazaar—the monsoon drizzle is a daily 4 p.m. event. Local rule: no touching the stalactites (oil from skin stops growth), no loud music in the cave (bats roost), and the Riwai root bridge is on Khasi sacred land—dress modestly, no swimming under the bridge (it's a water source). The moss on the limestone is considered "the cave's breath" by the Khasi—don't pick it. Opinion: Mawsmai is the most visited cave in Meghalaya, but the mossy limestone trail above it is overlooked. Should the village charge a combined 50 INR ticket for cave + trail and use it for moss restoration, or keep them separate? I'd combine and cap daily visitors at 200. Would you crawl through a narrow limestone cave to earn a walk on a mossy cliff?

#easytravelpost Sohra (Cherrapunji) is 54 km from Shillong (sumo ₹150, 2 hrs), Nohkalikai Falls gate ₹30, the Double-Decker Root Bridge at Nongriat is 3,000 steps down from the Tyrna parking (free entry, guide ₹600–1,000/group mandatory from 2024). I slept in Sohra (1,200 INR homestay), drove to Tyrna at 07:00, descended 90 min. The moss is the whole descent: limestone stair-cut through subtropical forest, moss on the step edges and the Ficus root-bridges themselves 3 cm thick, 17°C in November, a greater racket-tailed drongo, the sound of Nohkalikai's 340 m fall behind the ridge. The double-decker bridge is two tiers of living Ficus elastica roots woven over 200 yrs — I stood on the lower deck at 08:40, the moss on the root-rail silver with spray, a Khasi kid selling 30 INR boiled eggs. Then the climb back: 2.5 hrs up, harder than down. Mistake: I did it in August — 2,500 mm/month rain, the steps a brown sludge, leeches on the ankles; Nov–Feb dry window only. Another: the ₹30 Nohkalikai ticket and the root-bridge trek are separate; many turn back at the falls viewpoint thinking that's the bridge — it isn't, you need the Tyrna steps. Would you pay 600–1,000 INR guide for the 3,000-step mossy descent to the double-decker root bridge + ₹30 Nohkalikai stop, or skip Nongriat and do the easy Mawsmai cave instead?

Meghalaya had been on my travel list for a while, and this trip turned out to be one of those journeys where every day brought a completely different landscape—from misty mountains and waterfalls to crystal-clear rivers and lush forests. Here’s my 5-day Meghalaya itinerary if you’re planning your first trip. Day 1 — Shillong I started my Meghalaya journey from Shillong, the perfect base to ease into the trip. Spend the day exploring the city, enjoying local food and taking in the beautiful hill views. Day 2 — Cherrapunji (Sohra) Next came Cherrapunji, one of the highlights of my trip. The day was all about waterfalls and breathtaking landscapes. I explored Wei Sawdong Falls, where the three-tiered waterfall surrounded by greenery was absolutely stunning. This is definitely one place I would recommend adding to your Meghalaya itinerary. Day 3 — Caves, Waterfalls & Nature Meghalaya is much more than waterfalls. I explored more of the region’s natural beauty, including caves, forest trails and scenic viewpoints. If you enjoy adventure and photography, keep this day flexible—you’ll probably want to stop every few minutes because the scenery is incredible. Day 4 — Dawki & the Crystal-Clear Umngot River One of my favourite experiences was visiting Dawki and getting onto the famous Umngot River. The water was unbelievably clear, and kayaking through the surrounding green hills made the experience even more memorable. It felt completely different from the Meghalaya I had experienced in Sohra. Day 5 — Mawlynnong & Exploring Before Departure I wrapped up the trip by exploring Mawlynnong and enjoying a slower day surrounded by Meghalaya’s greenery and peaceful villages. After five days, I realised Meghalaya isn’t really a destination you simply visit—it’s a place you experience slowly. Hidden deep near Cherrapunji, this three-tier waterfall is not just a sightseeing spot—it’s a small adventure in itself. My Experience at Wei Sawdong Falls The photos online already looked stunning, but I wasn’t prepared for how beautiful it would be in real life. The turquoise-green water, layered falls, and forest surroundings felt almost surreal. Reaching the waterfall isn’t instant—you have to descend a steep and sometimes slippery trail. But that’s exactly what makes the experience memorable. As I walked down, I could hear the waterfall before I saw it. And then suddenly, the trees opened up, and the full view of Wei Sawdong Falls appeared. It was one of those moments where you just stop and stare. What Makes Wei Sawdong Special? Wei Sawdong is a three-tier waterfall with clear water flowing into natural pools, surrounded by lush green cliffs. The view changes beautifully from different angles, making it extremely photogenic. The name comes from the Khasi language, where “Wei” means pool and “Sawdong” refers to a square-like shape, reflecting the structure of the falls. Getting There Wei Sawdong Falls is about 60 km from Shillong, near Cherrapunji. The drive is scenic but depends on road conditions. From the parking area, you need to walk down a steep trail to reach the falls. The path can be slippery, especially after rain, so proper footwear is important. Is the Trek Difficult? It’s not a hardcore trek, but it does require effort. The descent is manageable, but uneven paths and ladders in some sections can be tricky. The climb back up is more tiring, but honestly, the view at the bottom makes it worth it. Best Time to Visit The waterfall looks most powerful during the monsoon and post-monsoon season when the water flow is strong and the surroundings are lush green.
