It’s super easy to reach from Beijing! We went to China this October, and since Inner Mongolia was one of our main objectives, we decided to take the high-speed train from Beijing. Normally, it’s a 9–10 hour journey, but with China’s high-speed rail, it took us only around 2.5 hours. The ride was so smooth it felt like floating — plus, you get to enjoy the view of northern China’s rolling hills along the way. 🌾 We booked our tickets through Trip.com, and it’s honestly the most convenient way. You can even book before tickets are officially available , they helps queue for you so you can “chop” your seat before others. 🔹 Important tip: The train to Chifeng (and I think other Dongbei cities like Harbin) departs from Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station 北京朝阳, not the more famous Beijing Railway Station 北京火车站. Don’t go to the wrong station! Hongshan in Chifeng is located in the northeast corner of Hongshan District, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia. It is named Hongshan (Red Mountain) because the exposed rocks are ochre red. In Mongolian, it is called Ulan Hada, which is also the origin of the name Chifeng City. This is also the discovery site of the "Hongshan Culture" relic group. Today, Hongshan is part of Hongshan National Forest Park and is a great place for holiday outings. Guide: Enter the park through the west gate, where there is a large open area for parking. After entering, you can walk around the park along the paved concrete road. You can choose a large or small loop depending on your stamina (see the guide map in the comments). The large loop takes less than 2 hours to complete. The scenery along the way is decent; to the south, you can see suburban factories (p9), and to the north, you can see the Yingjin River and distant mountains (p10). The entire route is wide and flat concrete, making it easy to walk. P11 shows the stone monument at the farthest end of the route. The reddest and most beautiful mountain body is north of the west gate, with the viewing platform next to the "Stone Bell" facing the big mountain (p12p13). However, there is no road here, so to reach the summit, you need to hike off-trail. Known as the "Birthplace of China's First Dragon," "Hongshan Culture," and "Xinglongwa Culture," the land of Chifeng carries many labels, but what attracts me most is the Liao Dynasty culture here. During the Liao Dynasty, the Five Capitals system was established, and the Chifeng area belonged to Shangjing Linhuangfu and Zhongjing Dadingfu, serving as the political, economic, and cultural centers of the Liao Dynasty, witnessing the fusion of nomadic and agricultural civilizations. As the golden autumn grasslands were coming to an end, with the cold wind blowing, I spent three days briefly pursuing the Liao culture. If you plan to view the night sky at the White Pagoda recently, please be very careful. There is no lighting around, so travel with companions and take proper measures to keep warm.
