🚄 From Beijing to Inner Mongolia in Just 2.5 Hours! | How to Get to Chifeng Fast and Easy Chifeng is one of the gateways to beautiful Inner Mongolia — and the best part? It’s super easy to reach from Beijing! We went to China this October, and since Inner Mongolia was one of our main objectives, we decided to take the high-speed train from Beijing. Normally, it’s a 9–10 hour journey, but with China’s high-speed rail, it took us only around 2.5 hours. The ride was so smooth it felt like floating — plus, you get to enjoy the view of northern China’s rolling hills along the way. 🌾 We booked our tickets through Trip.com, and it’s honestly the most convenient way. You can even book before tickets are officially available , they helps queue for you so you can “chop” your seat before others. 🔹 Important tip: The train to Chifeng (and I think other Dongbei cities like Harbin) departs from Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station 北京朝阳, not the more famous Beijing Railway Station 北京火车站. Don’t go to the wrong station! Other travel tips: 1️⃣ Arrive at least 30 mins early — the station is huge and you’ll need to pass security check. 2️⃣ Just hand your passport to the station staff at the check-in gate. 3️⃣ You can store your luggage overhead or grab quick bites like cup noodles from the canteen car. 4️⃣ There’s a toilet onboard too (clean and modern). 5️⃣ Listen carefully for your stop — we almost missed ours because we got too comfy 😂 Welcome to Chifeng, the wild frontier of China. Who could say no to a thatched courtyard surrounded by flowers! With its blue brick walls, thatched roof, wooden lattice windows, and rattan pendant lights, every detail exudes a rustic and gentle atmosphere. The courtyard is filled with roses and hydrangeas; when they bloom, the layers of color make every corner perfect for photos. Spend the day lounging on the terrace, surrounded by lush greenery and flowers—it's quiet and relaxing. When night falls, the string lights slowly turn on, casting flickering shadows under the trees, creating an absolutely divine atmosphere. Invite friends over to sit around and dine, enjoy local delicacies, and chat in the evening breeze. It's perfect for small gatherings with friends or family team-building, a great way to escape the city noise and enjoy a slow-paced time in the courtyard 🌷

📅 Oct 6–Oct 7, 2026 ☀️ Weather: Sunny, the weather was perfect 🚗 Route: Jilin → Chifeng → Yulong Sand Lake → Beijing I didn't have high expectations, but the whole trip exceeded them! Unedited photos + real experience + tips to avoid pitfalls. If you're planning to go, you can just copy my itinerary 👇 1️⃣ Road trip highlights The stretch from Tongliao to Chifeng had ridiculously little traffic and the road conditions were excellent—it was a blast to drive! ⚠️ Safety first, though; obey the speed limits. 2️⃣ Stay: Yulong Sand Lake Container Hotel The service was average and the AC was nice and warm, but the lake-view room was beautiful (Photo 1). Watching the starry sky from the balcony at night and waking up to the sunrise was worth it! 3️⃣ Desert: Few people, fine sand We went into the desert at 8:30 AM and saw fewer than 10 groups of tourists; it didn't get crowded until after 10:00 AM. The sand was fine. I originally wore shoe covers, but later I just ran barefoot in the sand—double the fun! 4️⃣ Honest review of activities The lake tour was a bit underwhelming; the off-road vehicle is driven by a driver, so you just sit there after buying the ticket—no sense of participation. The motorcycle ride for 2 laps isn't great value for money; the camels' noses were being pulled tight, which was heartbreaking to see. 5️⃣ Hot spring: A big plus The outdoor open-air pool is stunning amidst the yellow and green autumn colors, and the natural sulfur water is the perfect temperature. We went at 12:00 PM and had the place to ourselves! The downside is that the shower facilities are very poor. 🍽 Dining The Hulan Mongolian restaurant on the Chifeng "must-eat" list was really average; the meat was a bit dry and not really to my taste. On the other hand, a hot pot lamb place on the side of the road in Wulan Town got unanimous praise! Don't rely too much on those lists. ✅ Summary Overall, Yulong Sand Lake exceeded expectations: the lake-view room, starry sky, sunrise, hot spring, and sand sliding were the highlights. Don't set your expectations too high for the activities. It's suitable for those who want to travel off-peak, go on a road trip, soak in hot springs, and watch the stars.

Get a good night’s sleep, because tomorrow you’ll be heading into the grasslands! 🌲 DAY 2 — Saihanba Forest Farm & Ulan Butong Today, the scenery starts to change. Leave Chifeng and travel through Saihanba Forest Farm, where stretches of forest, open landscapes and fresh mountain air make the drive part of the experience. 🌲🚗 Continue to Ulan Butong, one of the region’s most scenic destinations, known for its rolling grasslands, lakes and movie-like landscapes. Here are the places I’d put on the list: 📍 Baicao Aobao — a scenic stop to enjoy the vast grasslands. 🎬 Ulan Butong Film & TV Base — a popular filming area with wide-open views and traditional-style scenery. 🌾 European Style Scenery Area — rolling hills, open fields and beautiful photo opportunities. 💙 Princess Lake — a lovely combination of water, grassland and surrounding hills. If the light is right, stay a little longer for that golden-hour glow. Ulan Butong has served as a filming location for Chinese historical productions, which helps explain why some of its landscapes feel like scenes from a period drama. 📸 Photography tip: Don’t just photograph the famous viewpoints. Sometimes the best pictures come from an ordinary road, a few grazing horses or a quiet corner of the grassland. 🏡 Overnight in Ulan Butong. 🐎 DAY 3 — Dada Line, Gongger Grassland & Re’A Line This is probably my favourite day of the entire trip. If the weather cooperates, wake up early and catch the morning mist over the grasslands. 🌤️ Horses grazing through the haze? That’s a pretty good reason to get out of bed. Then hit the road! 🚗 Dada Line The Dada Line is famous for its open-road scenery, with grasslands stretching towards the horizon and cattle and sheep grazing beside the road. This is the kind of drive where you don’t need a complicated plan. Put on your favourite playlist, enjoy the views and stop safely whenever you find a beautiful viewpoint. 🌾 Gongger Grassland Next, explore Gongger Grassland, known for its expansive meadows, open skies and peaceful atmosphere. Take a walk, enjoy the scenery and give yourself time to appreciate just how vast Inner Mongolia feels. 🌲 Re’A Line & Huanggangliang Continue along the Re’A Line, where the landscape gradually changes from grassland to forests and mountain meadows. Around the Huanggangliang area, expect winding roads, changing elevations and beautiful views. The drive can be curvy, so take it slowly and let the driver concentrate on the road. By evening, arrive at Reshui Town. ♨️ If time and your accommodation allow, finish the day with a relaxing hot spring soak. After hours on the road, your body will thank you! 🏨 Overnight in Reshui Town. 🏜️ DAY 4 — Yulong Sand Lake & Return to Chifeng Ready for a completely different landscape? Today, trade the grasslands and forests for sand dunes and desert scenery. Welcome to Yulong Sand Lake, where sandy landscapes meet a lake and patches of greenery. The contrast makes this destination feel completely different from the previous few days. Things you can try: 🚂 Take a desert sightseeing train. 🐪 Go camel riding if available. 🏂 Try sand sliding, depending on the season and operating conditions. 📸 Walk around the lake and dunes for photos that look nothing like your grassland pictures. The best part of this trip is the variety. One day you’re surrounded by golden forests and horses; the next, you’re looking at sand dunes beside a lake. After exploring, return to Chifeng for the night. 🏨 Overnight in Chifeng. ☕ DAY 5 — Chifeng City Walk & Departure All good trips eventually come to an end, but there’s no need to make the last day stressful. Depending on your flight or train schedule, enjoy a slow breakfast and explore Chifeng at your own pace. If you didn’t visit Chifeng Museum on Day 1, this is a good opportunity to fit it in. Otherwise, spend some time exploring local streets, buying a few souvenirs and enjoying one last local meal. 🥙 One more Chifeng Dui Jia? Absolutely. Looking out from the heights, the rolling mountains unfold before your eyes, offering a wide view and a refreshing autumn breeze. A trip wouldn't be complete without authentic Mongolian cuisine. The local herdsman leads the horse, walking slowly, and you don't have to think about anything—just sway along. In the evening, go to Jiangjun Paozi to watch the sunset. The water reflects the afterglow, with pink and orange hues blending together. A herd of horses trots by the water's edge, splashing as they go. I can't describe this scene in words; you have to see it for yourself. Why come here? Perhaps because there are always moments in life when you feel like you can't catch your breath. But standing on this vast land, under the expansive sky, those worries suddenly seem smaller. As the wind blows, it feels like you can let go of everything. Autumn in Bashang is very short, only about 20 days or so. The golden leaves fall as quickly as they appear.
