🏰 The Emblematic Plaza Mayor of Chinchón
The Plaza Mayor of Chinchón, located in the Community of Madrid, is regarded as one of the most beautiful and unique medieval squares in Spain, and is declared a Historic-Artistic Site.
Architecture and Unique Features:
* Origin: Its first houses with arcades and balconies date back to the 15th century, becoming fully enclosed in the 17th century.
* Design: It features an irregular shape and is an outstanding example of popular Castilian architecture.
* The "Claros": Its most distinctive feature is its 234 wooden balconies (known as "claros") painted a characteristic green color. They span three levels and are supported by lintels and posts.
Historical and Current Uses:
Since its construction, the square has been the central hub of local life, serving as the stage for:
* Bullfights (the first documented was in 1502). The balconies function as impromptu viewing boxes.
* Corral de Comedias (theater), religious acts, and royal festivities.
* Markets, fairs, and royal proclamations.
Today, the square remains the heart of Chinchón, housing numerous traditional restaurants (like Mesón de la Virreina, Café de La Iberia, and La Columna), terraces, and shops, offering visitors a unique gastronomic experience with unbeatable views of the historic enclosure.
Interesting Fact: In 1974, the town of Chinchón was declared a Historic-Artistic Site.

🏛️ Café de La Iberia: A Historic Gem on the Plaza Mayor
#europetrip
The prominent Café de La Iberia is a historic restaurant in Chinchón, Madrid, located at Plaza Mayor, 17.
History: Founded in 1879, the establishment has a rich past, having functioned as an old cafe, a casino, and a posada (inn). Legend says it was a spot where bullfighters would put on their traje de luces (suits of light) before entering the famous Plaza Mayor bullring.
Cuisine: Today, it is a well-regarded restaurant specializing in traditional Castilian cuisine. The menu is known for its:
* Grilled Meats (including churrasco and other cuts).
* Roast Lamb Sweetbreads (mollejas de cordero).
* Traditional dishes and a variety of fresh fish.
Like its neighbor, the greatest draw is the seating on its balcony-terrace, which offers unparalleled, iconic views of Chinchón's unique circular plaza.
Historical Context: Note that a different, earlier establishment called "Café de la Iberia" was a famous 19th-century political and literary meeting place (tertulia café) in Madrid city proper, which closed in 1910. The Chinchón location is the modern-day, highly-rated establishment.
Location: Plaza Mayor, 17, 28370 Chinchón, Spain.

Exploring the Architectural History of Chinchón Church
Central Spain Tour ~ Madrid (Region)
Located in the upper part of Chinchón, next to the Lope de Vega Theater (formerly the Conde Palace), is the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. This modest 16th-century structure was built by master architects Juan Gutiérrez and Diego Gutiérrez. The construction process was undoubtedly challenging, as it took nearly 100 years to complete, finally finishing in 1626.
The church lacks a bell tower because the tower is situated on the other side of the square. This tower is a remnant of the old monastery, which was burned down and razed by the French in 1808. Hence, there is a saying: "Chinchón has a church without a tower and a tower without a church."
The interior of the church is simple yet beautiful, featuring various statues of saints and virgins, as well as the "Passion Steps" that appear in the famous Chinchón Holy Saturday Passion Procession. This procession has been held since 1963 and has been declared a National Tourist Attraction. However, the most striking feature is the altarpiece at the center of the altar, which showcases Goya's painting "The Assumption of the Virgin." This stunning artwork faced significant criticism at the time because Goya achieved something seemingly impossible in his composition: from a close distance, the Virgin appears to be wearing transparent clothing, and he also depicted the figure of a woman.

Medieval Plaza Stroll Experience
Central Spain Tour ~ Madrid (Region)
A plaza full of charm. The Mayor's Plaza in Chinchón retains a medieval atmosphere that makes it truly unique. Its green-painted wooden balconies, arcades, and irregular shape set it apart from other typical plazas. This is one of those places where you’ll want to sit on a terrace and soak in the ambiance.
During the day, the plaza is lively but not overwhelming: people stroll around, sip drinks, and the surrounding architecture serves as a constant reminder that you’re in a historically rich location. Occasionally, markets or traditional celebrations are held here, bringing a different kind of vibrancy to the plaza. It’s highly recommended to try the local Chinchón anise or dine at one of the restaurants overlooking the square.

Humanistic and Culinary Experience at Chinchón's Medieval Plaza
Central Spain Tour ~ Madrid (Region)
Chinchón's beautiful medieval plaza is the town's most iconic feature. The plaza has an irregular layout and is surrounded by two- or three-story houses with balconies. Historically, it has been a venue for various events and performances, a tradition that continues to this day.
Located 45 kilometers from Madrid, Chinchón is easily recognizable from afar due to its hillside houses. In addition to its signature main square, Plaza Mayor, with its wooden balconies and beam-lined galleries, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption (1534-1626) is also worth a visit. This church was looted and burned by Napoleon's troops in 1808. The current structure, built in 1828, combines Gothic, Plateresque, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Inside, it houses Goya's masterpiece, "The Assumption of the Virgin."
Other notable landmarks include the 17th-century Convent of St. Clare; the bell tower of the old parish church, restored in 1856; and the ruins of a 15th-century castle, rebuilt by the third Count of Chinchón between 1590 and 1598, but burned by Napoleon's troops in 1808. In the town center, you'll find noble houses adorned with coats of arms, as well as stately homes featuring beautiful courtyards and arcades supported by Doric, Ionic, or Tuscan columns, or straight columns with stone bases and pedestals.
