Chiba is a super cute city just 30 minutes outside of Tokyo, you can reach it via the Narita airport express or on the Tokyo metro. It is famous for Disney and the airport but it has so much more than that! As an avid transport fan I went there to see the worlds longest suspended monorail system, the train hangs from the track and zooms between skyscrapers like a roller coaster ride. The city also has the famous Chiba port tower with an observation deck that allows you to see out over the city and the port, one of the busiest in Japan. Just down the road from the port tower is the local art gallery which was surprisingly big - with four main rooms of art along with sculptures outside in the gardens. The city also has amazing shopping options with huge malls and department stores, full of all the leading brands - a lot quieter than Tokyo! I found this was a nice city to spend a day out of Tokyo as it still has big city vibes but it is a lot more relaxed than Tokyo! Sept 2024 - A trip to two museums and the Koura Coast. To catch the breathtaking views of the Koura Coast, you have to hike through some dense bushes. Since I visited in the summer, the overgrowth was pretty wild. I actually bumped into a snake and a muntjac deer on the way there! I got quite a scare when the bushes rustled and the deer suddenly leaped out. Getting there was a bit tough since the path wasn't very clear, but the scenery was so gorgeous that it was totally worth the trek. The first one is a cozy little museum. It seems like swimming at the nearby beach is the main draw around here. Instead of fossils, this museum features living marine creatures. I saw a smooth box crab (Calappa lophos), which was super cute! It's a crab, but it tucks its claws close to its body. Admission: Adults 200 yen, High School/College Students 100 yen Although it's in a slightly different area, I stopped by the Natural History Museum and Institute, Chiba on my way back. While the Coastal Branch Museum only takes up one floor, the main Central Museum is huge and impressive. There are tons of spectacular exhibits to check out. For our first dinner after arriving in Chiba, we found so many different types of dining options nearby. Chiikawa Yaki, located on the second floor of Ekimae Mall at AEON MALL Makuhari New City, in front of Makuhari Toyosuna Station. These popular chiikawa-shaped taiyaki-like treats are sold by Kurikoan, a taiyaki seller in the Tokyo metropolitan area, so you can be sure they taste great. Currently, reservations are required in advance, with lottery entries accepted between 14 and 7 days before your visit. For dates and times when slots aren't filled by lottery, reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis. However, since it had been a while since the store opened, same-day reservations were possible on weekdays. On this day, it looked like we could get a reservation for as little as an hour later. At the time of our reservation, the staff explained to us that each person could purchase only one merchandise item and a maximum of six chiikawayaki. This time, we purchased Set A (anko, chocolate, and cream). The crust was sweet and fluffy, and the inside was filled with plenty of cream and bean paste. The taste is similar to regular taiyaki, but the chiikawa shape gives it a special feel. This shop is recommended for chiikawa lovers!
