We had an amazing two days with Rob as our tour guide. On the first day, we went on a Moke Lake hike, and the second day was a full day of wine tours. Rob was incredible—very knowledgeable about the whole region, with great energy and a wonderful personality! We can't recommend him highly enough!

We spent 3 nights in a large camper van and had a wonderful experience. The location is excellent—just a 5-minute walk into town, yet it's quiet and tucked away. Although the pitches are relatively small, it wasn't an issue for us. I especially appreciated the cozy kitchen/lounge area, and the reception staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The showers and bathrooms were excellent as well.

I rented a car in Queenstown (70 NZD/day), left 08:00, and pulled over at the Bennetts Bluff lay-by first (no moss, but the lake mirror is the reason), then again at the Moke Lake turnoff (free, 4 km dirt in) where the tussock meets the lake and moss grows on the lakeside schist 1 cm thick, 3°C at 08:40 in August. Glenorchy township (pop. 200) has two cafés: Mrs Woollys General Store (salmon pie 9 NZD, flat white 5.50 NZD, open 08:00, card ok) and The Trading Post (closed Mondays). I parked at Mrs Woollys at 09:20, the moss on the store's north timber wall still wet from the lake fog, a paradise duck on the inlet, and ate the salmon pie looking at the Earl Mountains. The 2 km Glenorchy lagoon boardwalk behind the store is the mossy walk — swamp cypress, moss on the planks' edges, sandflies in Jan–Feb so carry repellent. Mistake: I drove the road in a July frost at 07:00 — black ice at the Moke Lake turnoff; 08:00 sun is safer. Another: Glenorchy has no fuel; fill in Queenstown. Would you drive the 45 km Glenorchy Road at 08:00 for the Moke Lake mossy schist stop + 9 NZD salmon pie at Mrs Woollys, or skip Glenorchy and do the Queenstown Skyline gondola café instead?
