Cornwall travel guide and discussion

I think St Ives is one of those places that is almost impossible to describe properly in a photo. You can take a picture of the beach. You can take one of the harbour. You can photograph the little streets and colourful boats, but somehow none of them quite capture what it actually feels like to be there. The first thing that struck me about St Ives was the colour of the water. On a sunny day, it is ridiculously blue. For a moment, you could genuinely convince yourself that you’ve travelled somewhere much further away than Cornwall. Then you turn around and you’re standing in a narrow little Cornish street with a pasty in your hand. That’s St Ives. Porthminster Beach I started by heading towards Porthminster Beach, which is only a short walk from the centre of St Ives. It is a beautiful stretch of golden sand, backed by the town and surrounded by the hills and coastline of St Ives Bay. When the weather is good, it is hard to believe you’re looking at a beach in England. I could have happily stayed there for hours. There is something very relaxing about just sitting by the sea and watching the boats move around the bay. No schedule, no rushing around, just enjoying where you are. Of course, Cornwall doesn’t always provide perfect weather. But even with clouds rolling in, the coastline still has a completely different character. In some ways, I actually prefer it like that. Wandering around St Ives The best way to see St Ives is probably to forget about having a strict plan. Just walk. The streets around the harbour are full of little shops, cafés, galleries and places selling all the things you would expect from a Cornish seaside town. Some streets are surprisingly narrow, and you can easily find yourself turning down one just because it looks interesting. That’s what I enjoyed most. There isn’t necessarily a particular destination you’re trying to reach. You’re just taking everything in as you go. And obviously, you can’t visit Cornwall without having a Cornish pasty. There are plenty of places to choose from, although I quickly realised that trying to eat one while walking around without making a complete mess of yourself is harder than it sounds. The harbour The harbour is probably the part of St Ives that I kept coming back to. Small fishing boats sit in the water, surrounded by the old buildings and winding streets of the town. It feels incredibly picturesque without actually feeling like it was designed to look picturesque. People sit outside cafés, tourists wander along the waterfront and, depending on the weather, you can spend ages just watching the sea. I found myself stopping more often than I expected. Sometimes you don’t realise how much you need to slow down until you’re somewhere that makes it easy to do so. A town shaped by art St Ives is also famous for its connection with the arts, and that becomes obvious as you explore. There are galleries everywhere, and the Tate St Ives sits overlooking Porthmeor Beach. Even if you’re not someone who would normally spend your holiday visiting art galleries, the setting alone makes it worth a look. The light here is incredible, particularly around the coastline, so it isn’t difficult to understand why artists have been drawn to the area for so long. Don’t just stay in the town If you have the time, I’d really recommend exploring beyond St Ives. The surrounding coastline is where you start to see a completely different side of Cornwall. The South West Coast Path takes you away from the busy streets and towards dramatic cliffs, beaches and huge stretches of open coastline. One route I particularly wanted to do was from St Just towards Land’s End. It is a very different experience from spending the morning around St Ives. Instead of cafés and shops, you’re walking along the edge of Cornwall with the Atlantic stretching out in front of you. And this is where I think Cornwall really gets you. You can be somewhere busy and touristy one minute, then half an hour later you’re standing somewhere incredibly quiet, with nothing but the sea and cliffs around you. A few things I’d recommend If you’re visiting St Ives, I’d definitely try to arrive earlier in the day, particularly during the summer. It can get busy, and the town is much more enjoyable when you’re not constantly trying to navigate through crowds. I’d also leave some time to simply wander. Don’t fill every hour with attractions. And if you’re planning on exploring the wider area using public transport, check the timetables beforehand. Services can be limited, particularly once you get further along the coast. Most importantly, give yourself time to actually enjoy St Ives. Don’t just arrive, take a few photographs and leave. Sit by the harbour. Walk along the beach. Get something to eat. Wander down a street because it looks nice. Those ended up being some of my favourite parts. Would I go back? Definitely. St Ives has that rare combination of beautiful scenery and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than you planned. I went expecting a pretty Cornish seaside town. I came away feeling like I’d experienced somewhere with a lot more character than that. Maybe that’s why St Ives stays with you. It’s not just one particular attraction or viewpoint. It’s the whole experience of being there, walking around with the sea beside you, stopping whenever you feel like it and realising that, for once, you don’t really need to be anywhere else. #StIves #StIvesCornwall #Cornwall #CornwallUK #VisitCornwall #CornishCoast #CornwallCoast #SouthWestEngland #UKTravel #UKStaycation #BritishSeaside #SeasideTown #CoastalWalks #SouthWestCoastPath

Cornwall Newquay Tolcarne beach 🏖️ From beautiful sandy beaches to exploring hidden coves, Newquay has so much to offer. It almost feels as if you've traveled abroad with the milder climate you don't always have to travel abroad for a holiday. 🙂

#worthitornot The Lost Gardens of Heligan is one of the United Kingdom's most enchanting attractions, offering a peaceful escape into beautifully restored historic gardens. From colorful flower displays and ancient woodlands to mysterious jungle paths and iconic living sculptures, every corner feels like stepping into a storybook. What impressed me most was the variety of landscapes. One moment I was walking through elegant Victorian gardens, and the next I was exploring lush tropical plants in the Jungle section. The famous Mud Maid and Giant's Head sculptures are must-see highlights and make the gardens even more magical. Allow at least half a day to explore at a relaxed pace, as there are plenty of walking trails, hidden viewpoints, and quiet places to enjoy nature. Whether you're a garden lover, photographer, or simply looking for a peaceful day out, The Lost Gardens of Heligan is a destination that's truly worth visiting. #WorthItOrNot #TheLostGardensOfHeli gan #Cornwall #England #UKTravel

#closetonature #100waysoftravel #england #englandtravel #Portcurno #penzance #cornwall During our visit to Cornwall, we embarked on the gentle circular walk along the Cornish coast, known as the Portcurno circular walk. Though considered an easy trail, some sections can be steep and uneven, adding a bit of excitement to the journey. The expansive sea views are stunning, with the rugged cliffs and turquoise waters creating a breathtaking backdrop. As we walked, we were greeted by the soothing sounds of the waves crashing below. When we reached Portcurno Beach, the fine, soft sand made it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, truly connecting us with nature.

The south coast of England has some of the best scenery can you think of. Cornwall and Dorest have lots of little beachside towns that have bed and breakfast hotels which are small but have great customer service. For those that are quite active, you can take plenty of country walks through national parks that are uninterrupted. The best time of year to go would be during the British summer (May - September) #natureshot #mountainview #awesomepic #summervacation #englandtravel

Imagine a place that is tucked in between numerous beaches - some that won Awards for cleanliness and surfing conditions - and mighty cliffs with mysterious doorways; freshly made mussels in creamy white wine sauce, art and the scent of baked goodies luring you in the nearest bakery down the street... That is how I felt about my visit to St Ives in Cornwall. 🌊🐚🐟🦀 St Ives is a town in Cornwall, England, known for its surf beaches, like Porthmeor, and its art scene. It can be considered the dazzling jewel in Cornwall’s crown. A picturesque fishing harbour and seaside town. Voted best family holiday destination by Coast magazine and one of TripAdvisor’s top 10 European beaches. ⭐ THINGS TO DO ⭐ · Go for a hike – 1) the shorter and easier route is through The Island, passing through St Ives Head with stunning views of the town, and finishing up the hill at St Nicholas Chapel; 2) the longer more intermediate level is down the south west path – start from Man’s Head, then go up to Clodgy Point and Hellsveor Cliff for stunning sunset views; the path is quite long and you can continue all the way down to Zennor. · Go surfing or for a swim in one (or all!) of your favourite beaches – Porthgwidden, Porthmeor, Bamaluz, Harbour Sand or Porthminster beach. · Shop down pebbled streets, choosing from a variety of quality goods in independent shops down Fore Street (known as the shopping street in town). · Browse fantastic ocean-inspired art at West Coast Studios. · Venture out to Carbis Bay for an amazing ‘hidden’ beach and clam-covered cliffs and cave-like rocks. #tripblazers #mytripvlog #cornwall

Found many unique artitechture building here at tingagel. Most of it made of stones. The pathway towards tintagel castle is quite rough and rocky. We had to be careful with our steps. We enjoyed the view from unique houses and my imagination runs wild. What if the people who live here don't have cars? Where does the food source come from? But majority of people here have their own transport or someone will deliver food supplies for them. Living in this area seems fun, surrounded with nature in mountain side. #createwithtrip #unitedkingdom #uk #discoveruk #exploreuk #europe #urbanexplorer #tintagel #cornwall #exploreeurope

This place is famous with its wave that is great for surfer due to its fistral. The location is kind of resort but open for public. Surrounded with beautiful houses as well. I found the icon of this place is like the 2 island connected with one another by the bridge. It feel so strange when in the middle of sea there's one lone house on top of like an island. When I get closer then I saw the bridge. Imagine if you were there alone without the bridge. How can you survive? and what happen when the bridge is broken? I really love the waves here. So nice and calming to see it moving. #createwithtrip #exploreuk #discovereurope #unitedkingdom #cornwall #urbanexplorer

The thick cream we put on our scones is called clotted cream in England! The origin of this cream is Cornwall! That's why I saw clotted cream being sold as a souvenir in stores all over Newquay, a small town where I went surfing! It was delicious to see it packaged nicely, but I went into a small tea shop and ate homemade cream and freshly baked scones... It was the best👍 As expected, it's different when you go to the birthplace of scones. Also, when you think of England, fish and chips are famous, and in Newquay, there's a shop called Flounder's, so I waited in line to get my food and sat on a bench on a hill overlooking the sea.❤️ #SummerCapture#RestaurantExploration#Cafe

Cliffs that just end. Water that looks too blue for England. Tiny villages where you keep stopping every five minutes for another photo. The spots that stayed with me: · St Michael’s Mount — time it with low tide and walk across the causeway. Feels like stepping into a storybook. · Porthcurno — white sand, absurdly blue water, and the kind of view that makes you forget you’re in the UK. · Minack Theatre — a theatre carved into the cliffs. Even without a show, the setting is unreal. · Land’s End — windy, wild, and worth it. · St Ives — beaches, galleries, pastel houses, and golden light everywhere. · Kynance Cove / Lizard Peninsula — for the coastal walks and proper postcard views. When to go: May, June, or September. Good weather, fewer crowds, and you can actually enjoy the roads. Summer is lovely but busy. Go early for empty beaches, stay late for the sunsets. Cornwall rewards both. #cornwall #uktravel #coastalescape #traveldiaries #travel2026 #travel #uk #uktrip #beachlife

On our roadtrip through Cornwall we spent an afternoon around Kynance Cove and Lizard Point and counting believe our eyes: The sheer beauty of the beaches, the crystal turquoise water and the cliffs finding their ways into it were simply amazing! 😍 How to spend the afternoon: Park at Kynance Cove and enjoy a coffee at the cute little cafe. ☀️ then take a walk up to Lizard Point 🥾 it takes around an hour to get there, and another hour to head back. Plan enough time to enjoy the views and beaches along the way 😍 Have you ever been there? What's your favourite beach around Cornwall? Land’s End, what a legendary spot to explore! Spending a day at the westernmost tip of mainland Cornwall is an absolute bucket-list experience. 🙂 I started my visit wandering through the charming visitor complex, passing cute shops like the "First & Last Refreshment House in England" and checking out the fascinating timeline board that dives into the local history. It’s such a neat place to grab a bite or a souvenir before heading out toward the open ocean! From there, I took off along the dramatic South West Coast Path. Walking along the rugged granite cliffs with the brilliant blue Atlantic stretching out as far as the eye can see was pure magic. Seeing the Cornish flag fluttering proudly against that endless blue sky really made the coastal breeze feel extra special. 🇬🇧 One of the most remarkable surprises along the hike was spotting the rusted remains of a shipwreck nestled tightly in a rocky gulley below the cliffs. 🛳️ Looking down at the roaring white waves crashing around the old iron hull gives you a real appreciation for the raw power of the sea here. It was a day full of dramatic landscapes, fresh sea air, and incredible views! Check out my photos and see for yourself! 🙂 Have you ever walked the cliff paths around Land’s End? Did you manage to spot the RMS Mungiron shipwreck down in the cove? Share your favourite Cornish coastal memories and tips in the comments below! 👇🏼 If you’re planning your trip down to Cornwall, feel free to ask me any questions—I’d love to help you plan your itinerary! #landsend #cornwall #uktrip #coastalviews #england #travel2026 #hiking

Why Wales, and why NOW? Wales just became the UK’s hottest “coolcation” destination. Trip.com data reveals searches for Welsh hotels are up 65% year-on-year for summer 2026, while rail bookings have surged 37% — outperforming Scotland, Cornwall, and the Lake District combined . Spanish travelers are searching for flights to Cardiff 20% more than last year , and Cardiff Airport expects 46,000 passengers this Easter alone — an 18% increase . But here’s what the algorithm won’t tell you: most visitors rush through Cardiff and Snowdon, and never see the collapsed sea caves, the petrified forests, or the £3.50 cawl where Wales actually breathes. This guide is built for the traveler who wants real value. Save it. You’ll use it. 🚆 TRANSPORT: The £16.40 Ticket That Beats Every Rental Car The mistake starts at Cardiff Airport. Taxis quote £35–50 to the city center. The T9 express bus costs a fraction of that, and once you’re in Wales, the Transport for Wales network is your best friend. Fares on all TfW services are frozen for a year from March 2026 . The combined ticket rule. TfW now sells single tickets that cover both train and TrawsCymru bus — no separate bookings, no fuss. Swansea to Aberystwyth costs £16.40 on one ticket. Cardiff to Brecon runs £18.60. Holyhead to Machynlleth is £15.60 . The Explore Wales Pass. For serious explorers, the Explore Wales Pass gives you unlimited train travel for four days in an eight-day period — plus unlimited bus travel for the full eight days. Adult pass: £169. Child: £84.50 . It covers Arriva Wales, Cardiff Bus, Stagecoach South Wales, and all TrawsCymru services . 🍲 FOOD: The £3.50 Cawl That Beats Every Restaurant Welsh food is not fancy. It’s cawl — a hearty lamb and root vegetable stew, the national dish. It’s Welsh rarebit — melted cheese on toast with ale and mustard. And it’s bara brith — a speckled fruit loaf, best eaten warm with butter. The pub rule. The best value in Wales is at a local pub. A bowl of cawl with bread costs £5–8. A Sunday roast — Welsh lamb, roast potatoes, and trimmings — runs £13.75–17 . A burger and a drink deal at a Greeneking pub is £9.95 . Two mains for £15.45 . Look for the pub with locals at the bar. That’s the one. Must-try, ranked: · Cawl — the national stew. £5–8 at a local pub. · Welsh rarebit — cheese on toast, done properly. £6–9. · Bara brith — the speckled fruit loaf. £2–4 a slice. · Welsh cakes — griddle-baked, eaten warm with sugar. £3–5 for six. · Sunday roast — Welsh lamb with all the trimmings. £13.75–17. The beer rule. Wales has a thriving craft beer scene. A pint at a local pub costs £4–5.50. At a Cardiff bar, expect £5.50–7. Look for Brains — Cardiff’s legendary brewery — or any of the smaller craft breweries that have sprung up across the valleys. 🗺️ HIDDEN WALES: 3 Places Tourists Miss 1. Witches’ Cauldron (Moylegrove, Pembrokeshire) — A collapsed sea cave where you can swim in water that glows magical emerald green in the sun. You can swim straight from the cave out to sea, or access it by kayak through tunnels. It’s a scramble down from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, but that’s exactly why it remains empty. Check accessibility first — it sometimes closes to protect local seals . 2. Castell y Bere (near Tywyn, Gwynedd) — While tourists queue for Conwy and Caernarfon, locals know that Castell y Bere is Eryri’s most enchanting castle. Built by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century, it stands on a windswept crag surrounded by flat, fertile pastures. The atmosphere of history is pervasive, almost crushing. Tread lightly. Don’t stay too long . 3. Machynlleth (Powys) — Named by Time Out as one of Europe’s most underrated destinations for 2026, this market town sits at the edge of the UNESCO-protected Dyfi Biosphere — a rich tapestry of marshes, woodlands, waters, and wildlife. It’s also where Owain Glyndŵr set up Parliament in 1404 as the last true Prince of Wales. The town hosts an annual comedy festival and has a modern art museum housed in a chapel . And for the foodies: it’s home to Ynyshir, Wales’ only two-Michelin-star restaurant . Honorable mention: The submerged forest at Ynyslas and Borth — tree stumps up to 5,000 years old, preserved in peat and visible at low tide. Walk down the beach and touch them. Imagine the world as it was . 💰 BUDGET REALITY CHECK Wales is moderate for the UK — cheaper than London, similar to northern England, and far more affordable than Cornwall in peak season. · Budget traveler: £50–75 per day — hostel dorms, pub meals, TfW trains and buses. · Mid-range traveler: £100–160 per day — private rooms or B&Bs, restaurant meals, occasional taxis. · Luxury traveler: £250+ per day — boutique hotels, fine dining, private transfers. · Cawl (local pub): £5–8. · Sunday roast: £13.75–17. · Welsh cakes: £3–5 for six. · Pint (local pub): £4–5.50. · TfW combined ticket (Swansea–Aberystwyth): £16.40. · Explore Wales Pass (adult): £169. These aren’t tourist rules — they’re how the country works. 1. Say “Bore da” or “Prynhawn da.” Welsh is a living language, and even a basic attempt is appreciated. “Bore da” means good morning. “Diolch” means thank you. “Os gwelwch yn dda” means please. In North Wales especially, Welsh is the first language for many — using it opens doors. 2. Don’t call it “England.” Wales is not England. It’s a country with its own language, its own parliament, and its own identity. Calling a Welsh person English is a genuine insult — even if unintentional. 3. Respect the hills. Snowdon is Yr Wyddfa in Welsh. The national park is Eryri. Use the Welsh names when you can — locals notice, and they appreciate it. And follow the Countryside Code: close gates, take your litter home, don’t disturb livestock. 4. The pub is a community hub. Don’t just drink and leave. Talk to people. Ask about the local area. Welsh pubs are where stories are told, songs are sung, and strangers become friends. If someone offers to buy you a pint, accept it — and return the favour. 5. Tipping is appreciated, not mandatory. Around 10% for good service in restaurants. Leave it in cash on the table. For taxis, round up. For tour guides, £5–10 per person per day. 💾 SAVE THIS POST IF: · You’re planning Wales in 2026 — it’s the UK’s hottest “coolcation” destination, with hotel searches up 65%. · You want to swim in the Witches’ Cauldron and eat cawl for £5 before the crowds find it. · You believe the best travel intel comes from real experience, not recycled top-10 lists. Port Isaac is the sort of place where you can spend half an hour wandering around and feel like you’ve accidentally walked onto a film set. The little whitewashed cottages, narrow winding streets and old fishing boats make it ridiculously picturesque. It is easy to understand why the village has been used as a filming location, but honestly, you don’t need to know anything about the films or TV shows to appreciate it. We started at the top of the village and walked down towards the harbour, which I’d definitely recommend doing rather than trying to drive down. The main public car park is up on the hill, and from there you can make your way towards the harbour and join the coastal path. You get some lovely views over the coastline as you make your way down, and it feels much more like you’re arriving in Port Isaac rather than simply parking in it. The main car park is also the sensible option because the village streets are incredibly narrow. Once we reached the harbour, we spent some time wandering around the little streets and exploring the waterfront. And this is where our slightly less organised side came out. We ended up sitting around the harbour, completely unaware of how quickly the tide was coming in. By the time we realised, the route we’d used to get back towards the pub was very much underwater. So, rather than admitting defeat, we took our shoes and socks off, rolled up our trousers and waded through the water. There is something quite ridiculous about standing in a beautiful Cornish harbour with your shoes in your hands, trying not to look like you have made a terrible mistake. We eventually made it back to the pub, slightly soggy but laughing about it. Looking back, it probably made the visit more memorable. One thing I would definitely recommend, though, is checking the tide times before heading down onto the harbour beach or spending a long time around the water. The harbour changes dramatically with the tide, and the exposed beach can disappear as the water comes in. Port Isaac itself is definitely worth taking your time with. Don’t just walk down to the harbour, take a photograph and leave. Explore the little streets. Look around the harbour. Follow the coastal path for a while. Find somewhere for a drink and watch the boats. Just keep an eye on the tide. Unless you fancy an unexpected barefoot walk back to the pub. #PortIsaac #PortIsaacCornwall #Cornwall #VisitCornwall #CornwallCoast #CornishCoast #CornwallTravel #SouthWestEngland #CoastalWalk #SouthWestCoastPath #CornishVillage #UKTravel #UKStaycation #ExploreCornwall
