Durham Cathedral Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Durham Cathedral, United Kingdom 🇬🇧⛪️
#timetotravel
The Durham Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located at the heart of Durham City Centre and right by the River Wear, it is definitely something not to miss when you are visiting Durham.
As a Norman-style Romanesque architecture, you can find loads of massive pillars in the Durham Cathedral, connecting the arches and the ground, which makes the Cathedral majestic and magnificent.
As a graduate from Durham University, Durham Cathedral truly has a place in my heart, as both my matriculation and graduation were held within the Durham Cathedral.
Fun fact: Durham Cathedral is a popular filming location for blockbuster films, movies such as Harry Potter and Avengers: Endgame were filmed there.

My favourite British cathedral
Most of Durham Cathedral was built by the Normans in 1133 with most of the interior you see today being completed within a very short time of only 40 years. Because of most of being completed in a short time it is famous for having a mostly unified gothic style which is rare for buildings like this.
You can see Durham cathedral from almost any point in the city of Durham itself. It is an iconic landmark which is free to visit and a still a working religious building. The staff are always very friendly in the cathedral and are happy to talk about some of the history.
Visiting the cathedral requires a walk up a steep bank but this is all part of the charm of Durham city.
Is highly recommend going for a walk along the River Wear in Durham city after a visit to really get a sense of the scale of the building.
Durham cathedral is also famous as a filming location for Harry Potter several years ago.
There are many famous religious buildings in the UK such as York Minster and Canterbury Cathedral. I often think because of its northern location Durham cathedral can be overlooked by tourists, however, it is well worth a visit to enjoy the city and it’s amazing old cathedral.
The first six stories of Harry Potter are mainly in the Hogwarts School of Magic, and the famous Norman architecture in the UK is one of the locations of the Hogwarts School of Magic. In the church, you can feel the magnificent architecture of the ancient British architecture, and listen to the melodious choir organ. Looking at the square atrium, you can recall the magical plot of the movie Harry Potter series. Being immersive, the sense of reality gradually replaced the original mystery. Tickets for the
church are free, and some exhibitions (such as the monastic dorms and treasures) are at their own expense. In addition, for a guided tour, adults are charged 5 and children or students are charged 4.5. If you don't participate in the tour, you can spend 1 pound to buy an introductory book. The church is very ceremonial, and it is simply a movie scene that God has restored.

Beamish Open Air Museum Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Live like a Victorian for a day
Beamish open air museum is unique in its size, it is the worlds largest open air museum. This means there are several streets and buildings to explore rather than a traditional inside exhibit. Beamish is huge and one of the worlds largest and tells the story of North East England in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Due to the size Beamish is more like a theme park with different areas to explore. To get from one area to another there are free trams which run every few minutes, again these are period pieces.
Every building in the museum has been taken from the local area and painstakingly taken down brick by brick and reassembled in the museum. The attention to detail is astonishing, every building is open for guests to go inside and there are also actors dressed up to tell the stories of the buildings and old inhabitants.
Beamish is easily a full day visit and there are lots of good food and drink options inside, including a fish and chip shop which cooks them in exactly the same way as they did 100 years ago.
Public transport to the museum is not the easiest and requires a bus transfer from Newcastle or Durham. However, driving to the museum is easy with lots of local signposts and large car parks which are well organised.
Time travel to 1800s in UK🇬🇧

Around 70 minutes outside of Newcastle Central is Beamish Museum, also called the living Museum of the north in the UK. Since northern England was a popular mining part of the country during that period, Beamish village perfectly showcases life back then.
A different periods include 1800s, 1900s, 1940s 1950s town. There are trams and buses that take you around the attraction.

Little Sicily, Durham, UK Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Little Sicily Restaurant in Durham was a wonderful, friendly restaurant. The food was delicious, fresh, reasonably priced, and Daniel, the host, was fantastic. We had an extremely funny night in this fascinating old restaurant, which incorporates parts of a railway station which closed 180 years ago.
