Wandering through the plateau and exploring historical sites
Spanish Central Plateau Hiking ~ Cuenca (Region)
Tragacete is a mountain town situated in a valley formed by the Jucar Riverbed. Its outskirts offer considerable heights, including Mogorita (1,866 meters) and San Felipe (1,840 meters). Tragacete's natural environment is quite diverse, encompassing valleys and canyons. Numerous marked "Pequeño Recorrido" (short walks) offer an insight into this beautiful landscape. The historic district showcases the characteristic features of local architecture: balconies with grilles and wooden beams. One of the most beautiful examples is the Church of San Miguel Archangel, built of brick and stone with ashlar corners. Its marble altarpiece was constructed in 1936, after the Civil War.

Enjoy the sunset at a stunning castle surrounded by mountains and rivers
Spanish Central Plateau Hiking ~ Cuenca (Region)
An incredible spot offering stunning views of the town of Alarcón and its 13th-century castle, surrounded by mountains and turquoise rivers. Definitely worth a visit. While there's no sign, there's a small unpaved area on the right as you approach from the road where you can stop for photos, right at the flagged town entrance. It's well worth it. Free access 24 hours a day. There's no shade, but the views will take your breath away.

A travel guide to Europe's quiet towns 🧳
Spanish Central Plateau Adventure ~ Cuenca (Central Region)
The town of Alarcón is nestled in a steep gorge flanking the Júcar River. Due to the beauty and harmony of its monuments and natural surroundings, it has been declared a Historic and Artistic Site.
The village walls, which remain largely intact, surround much of the town. There's also a castle, the main structure of which still stands, bearing witness to important events during the Reconquista; today, this monument houses the local Parador de Turismo. In the main square, or Plaza Mayor, you'll find the Church of San Juan Bautista, built in the 16th century in honor of Prince Juan Manuel on the site of an ancient Romanesque temple, and the town hall.

Wander through the medieval historic town
Spanish Central Plateau Hiking ~ Cuenca (Region)
This city is located in the Cuenca province of Castile-La Mancha. It's definitely worth strolling through Villanueva de la Jara's streets and squares to admire its hermitages, churches, manors, balconies, coats of arms, and more. Many of its monuments bear witness to its significant history, as in 1476 the Catholic Monarchs granted them the Privilege of Velázco in recognition of their support for Isabel I during the War of the Castilian Succession.
No trip would be complete without visiting the lively main square and monuments such as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Town Hall, and the Scroll of Justice, all dating back to the 15th century and located on the outskirts.
Villanueva de la Jara is also famous for being part of the "In the Footsteps of Saint Teresa of Ávila" route, created to commemorate the 500th anniversary of her birth. In fact, the area is home to two convents she founded and a Saint Teresa Interpretation Center. Not only can you see the sights illuminated at night, but you can also take guided tours to see major monuments, mushroom fields, and wineries. If you're traveling with your family, you might want to visit the nearby multi-purpose adventure park.

Located south of Cuenca, Valeria has a rich historical and artistic heritage that will take visitors back to the days of the Roman Empire.
Spanish Central Plateau Adventure ~ Cuenca (Region)
In the region known as "Manchuela," stands the monumental city of Valeria. Its historical significance has left a significant architectural legacy, some of which can be seen in its famous main square, or Plaza Mayor. Here, you'll find both the Town Hall (17th century) and the Romanesque Church of Asunción, dating from the 12th century and later rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries. Among the popular architecture, we must highlight the Palace of the Dukes of Granada. Near the city center, we can see the ancient Romano-Hispanic settlement of Valeria. A medieval fortress was built on this archaeological site, taking advantage of its strategic location on the hilltop and along the banks of the Gritos River. The ancient Roman cathedral was adapted for Visigothic rituals and later converted into the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Rotonda. The street layout and water supply system, which included an aqueduct, three underground reservoirs, and a "ninfeo," or fountain, can still be admired. #September2025 #Castilla-La Mancha

The stone gate of the ancient castle bears witness to the passage of time and culture
Spanish Central Highlands Hiking ~ Cuenca (Region)
From the Terrace of Unia, a few kilometers from the town of La Mancha, you can see the outskirts of Unia and the lagoon. From here, we can see the rocky coastal shelf known as Unia Castle, which protects the town from the elements. This is the landscape known as the Gorge of Los Cortados. The Las Majadas and Valdecabras mountain ranges form the backdrop to the town's entrance, with the Jucán River flowing through them. The highlight of this historic district is the Church of San Miguel Archangel, built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th. It is a brick and stone building with a pointed tower and a wooden gabled roof. The Feast of Saint Roque (August 16) is a great opportunity to learn about the folklore of the Cuenca Mountains. Hunting enthusiasts can visit the nearby Hosquillo National Hunting Park.

Wander through ancient ruins and experience the lingering charm of history
Spanish Central Plateau Hiking ~ Cuenca (Region)
The remains of the old stables at Uclés Monastery, built in the 17th century. The building is a large nave with ashlar corners and two levels. The main door is decorated with wedge-shaped arches and decorative moldings forming a frieze. One of the most striking reliefs, with geometric decorations from the Visigothic period, comes from the cathedral of the nearby Roman city of Segobriga. It is currently in ruins and inaccessible.

From Ruins to Glory: Tracing the Past Splendor
Exploring the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Cuenca (Region)
Also known as Castillo de Luna or Alcazaba de Wabda, this Islamic fortress was built in the 6th century. Archaeological excavations at the site have uncovered remains that confirm the mountain has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, continuing through the Roman and Visigothic periods. The first fortress was established here in the 6th century, reaching its peak in the 10th century under al-Mutarrif, when a large castle was constructed. In the 12th century, it began to be modified by Christians. The castle's layout is irregular, adapting to the terrain, and its remains are in very poor condition. The most notable features are the southeast walls and towers, which were reconstructed in the 20th century. The construction of antennas, a meteorological station, and the Sacred Heart Monument has altered the castle's surface. Throughout the site, you can find remnants of walls, cisterns, silos, and buildings.

A journey through Spain's central plateau ~ Cuenca (region)
The city's main buildings are centered around this square. In addition to modern buildings with soft colors, there are Baroque-style structures, some of which date back to the 15th century. Since the Middle Ages, it has been the social and economic hub for the people of Cuenca. Spacious, historic, unique architecture, shops, bars, and an excellent atmosphere. Like all places in Cuenca, its preservation, cleanliness, and grandeur are truly impressive.

The legend of the forbidden love between a Moorish princess and a Christian knight is witnessed through the eyes of Moorish women. These paintings embody stories of passion and sacrifice.

Visit the historic center of Castile-La Mancha
Spanish Central Plateau Hike ~ Cuenca (Region)
It's worth climbing the hills and winding streets to enter the heart of this small town nestled between the Júcar and Huécar canyons for stunning views. Be sure to visit the Plaza Mayor, home to the vaulted town hall and the beautiful cathedral built in the late 12th century.
Behind the cathedral, a street leads to Cuenca's symbol—the Hanging Houses. Three of them are worth visiting: Casa de la Sirena (which houses a restaurant) and Casas del Rey, home to the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art and featuring works by renowned artists like Tápies, Chillida, and Saura. To get spectacular photos of the Hanging Houses, conquer your fear of heights and cross the iron pedestrian bridge of Puente de San Pablo. At the other end is the Monastery of San Pablo, now the Parador Hotel and one of the best places to spend the night in the city, even more stunning under the floodlights. Cuenca will also surprise you with its quirky sights, like the "skyscrapers" of the San Martín district or the tunnels of Calle Alfonso VIII. If you enjoy museums, there's plenty to see: the Antonio Saura Foundation, the Antonio Pérez Foundation, the Science Museum... And if you're interested in local traditions, the Easter Museum is dedicated to the city's most famous festival.

Visit the windmill village on the Don Quixote Route
Windmill Village is a lesser-known destination, yet it always evokes a fairytale-like feeling. From researching online to actually getting there, and finally getting there by bus, everything was a long journey, truly unexpected. Often, the imagined experience can differ drastically from reality.
Getting to Windmill Village is indeed difficult unless you're traveling by car. First, you have to take a long bus, and the bus service is infrequent, so your time to visit is very limited.
Looking out the bus window, it was still dark. In the early morning hours, the sky shone with a blue hue, which gradually faded into the light of dawn, transforming into a faint yellow. Watching the changing colors of the horizon along the endless highway is unforgettable.

Cuenca: The Hanging Houses
A day in Cuenca was an amazing experience, enjoying the charming streets and historical landmarks. The first place we visited was the 'Hanging Houses (Casas Colgadas)'. The unique buildings perched on the cliff are an iconic sight of Cuenca, and we were overwhelmed by their grandeur. Next, we went to Cuenca Cathedral. We were impressed by the beautiful Gothic exterior and the magnificent interior. In the afternoon, we strolled through the old town, exploring the narrow alleys and cobblestone streets, discovering historical buildings and small squares. From the nearby mountaintop, we had a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city of Cuenca, and we were captivated by its beauty for a while. Cuenca is a wonderful place where history, nature, and culture harmonize, and it is full of charm that makes you want to visit again.

[La Mancha region] Spanish countryside scenery🌬️
#0 yen trip January 2025
A day in the La Mancha region was a wonderful trip where we could fully enjoy the history and beautiful scenery of Spain. First, we went to "Consuegra", famous for its windmills. The white windmills lined up on the vast plains gave us the feeling that we had wandered into the story of Don Quixote. Near the windmills, we visited the historical tools and agricultural tools displayed by local people, and experienced the climate and history of La Mancha. After that, we visited the town of Almansa and strolled through the beautiful castle and square. The townscape, which retains a strong medieval atmosphere, was impressive, and for lunch we enjoyed dishes made with the local specialty "Mantigo cheese". In the afternoon, we visited a local winery and sampled wine from La Mancha. We enjoyed the deep flavor of wine grown in rich soil. Finally, we drove through the great plains of La Mancha and felt the quiet time passing while watching the beautiful scenery of the sunset. We were able to spend a fulfilling day in the La Mancha region, where nature, history and culture are beautifully combined.

[Spain] The setting of Don Quixote! "The Hills of La Mancha"
La Mancha is a region just a short hour's drive (two hours by train) from Madrid, the capital of Spain.
"La Mancha" means "dry land" in Arabic, and it is a rural area with olive groves and dry land.
In one corner of the region, "Consuegra," there is "Windmill Hill," with its many towering white-painted windmills, which was the setting for the famous Don Quixote.
It is said that this was the model for the famous scene in which the protagonist Don Quixote mistakes a windmill for a giant and charges at it. There are
Next to the windmills are the remains of a brick fort from the Arab era, which looks completely different from the windmills.
On the other hand, there is nothing else around (I'm sure I couldn't go inside at the time...) but it was a really picturesque scene.
There was a statue of Don Quixote in the town near the nearest train station, Campo de Criptana.
I remember that the area in front of the station was pretty quiet, and it was hard to catch a taxi.
It's been 16 years since I visited, but it brings back fond memories...

Belmonte Castle 🗺️
I recently visited Belmonte Castle in Spain, and it was an amazing experience! 🏰 Located in the province of Cuenca, this medieval fortress is a must-see. The entrance fee was about 9 euros, which is well worth it for the chance to explore such a well-preserved castle. The architecture is stunning, with its Gothic-Mudejar style, and the views from the ramparts over the town and countryside are breathtaking.
Walking through the castle, I felt like I was stepping back in time. The rooms are beautifully restored, with displays that give you a sense of what life was like in the Middle Ages. The castle also has a fascinating history, having been a strategic military site and later a noble residence. 🌟
Nearby, the town of Belmonte itself is charming, with narrow streets and traditional Spanish houses. Don't miss the Collegiate Church of San Bartolomé and the nearby windmills, which are reminiscent of Don Quixote's adventures. For a unique experience, check out the local wine cellars and taste some regional wines.
Belmonte Castle is a perfect blend of history, architecture, and scenic beauty. #BelmonteCastle #Spain #MedievalMagic #TravelSpain 🏰🇪🇸
