The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus is located in the old city center of Damascus, the capital of the Syrian Arab Republic. It was built in 705 AD during the Umayyad Caliphate, hence it is also known as the Umayyad Mosque or the Great Mosque of Damascus. This mosque is one of the classic architectural masterpieces of the Islamic world and serves as a model for mosque architecture worldwide. The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus is one of the most important mosques in Islam. Originally, the site was an ancient temple dating back to 3000 BC, later becoming a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter. In 379 AD, it was converted into the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. In 636 AD, Arab forces captured Damascus, and in 705 AD, Caliph Walid I of the Umayyad dynasty ordered the construction of the mosque on the original site, which took ten years to complete. Historically, the mosque has been destroyed by fire three times, in 1069, 1400, and 1893. In the 19th century BC, it was designated the capital of the Kingdom of Shamash and has since been valued by successive dynasties, despite suffering multiple invasions and destructions. After the Roman and Byzantine Empires were replaced by the Arab Empire, Damascus reached its historical peak during the Umayyad period but was severely damaged during the Abbasid Caliphate. In the 12th century, Saladin commanded the battle here that defeated the European Crusaders. From the 16th century to the early 20th century, Damascus was under Ottoman Turkish rule, followed by over 30 years of French control. On April 17, 1946, Syria overthrew French colonial rule and declared independence. Figure 1: The bronze equestrian statue of Saladin, designed by Syrian sculptor Abdallah al-Sayed and unveiled in 1993 by then Syrian President Hafez al-Assad to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Saladin’s death. Made of bronze, it depicts Saladin standing on horseback during his victory at the Battle of Hattin, accompanied by a swordsman, with the crown of the Kingdom of Jerusalem engraved on the ground. Figures 3: Damascus Central Court, located adjacent to the Old City, close to the Umayyad Mosque and the Citadel of Damascus, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. It serves as a transitional zone between the modern urban functional area and the historical cultural core. Figures 6-9: Souq Al-Hamidiya in Damascus, Syria, is the most representative traditional market in Damascus and Syria, and one of the oldest covered markets in the Middle East. The market’s origins date back to the Roman period, with its modern form established during the 19th century Ottoman rule, constructed under the reigns of Abdul Hamid I and II, hence the name "Hamidiya." The main street is about 600 meters long, starting from the Citadel of Damascus in the west and connecting to the Umayyad Mosque Square in the east. Its stone pavement is built on the ruins of an ancient Roman theater, forming the city’s core link between commerce and religion. The site was originally an 8th-century BC Aramean temple dedicated to the storm god Hadad-Rimmon. After the Roman conquest of Damascus in 64 BC, it was transformed into a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter, begun during Augustus’s reign and completed under Constantine II. In 392 AD, when Christianity became the state religion of Rome, the temple was converted into the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. In 705 AD, the Umayyad Caliph Walid I rebuilt it as the Umayyad Mosque. Today, only some columns and arches remain. Figure 20: Four Seasons Hotel Damascus

Images 1-5, Saladin's Mausoleum, located in a small park north of the Umayyad Mosque. Saladin (1137-1193) was the Kurdish founder Sultan of the Ayyubid dynasty, who once unified Egypt, Syria, and other regions. He was the Islamic world leader against the Crusaders. In 1187, he recaptured Jerusalem but treated Christians with tolerance, being regarded by both East and West as a paragon of chivalry. He is revered as a national hero in the Arab world. Since his burial in 1193, fresh flowers have continuously been placed before his tomb, symbolizing the people's eternal respect for him. The mausoleum is a single-story building in the Ayyubid dynasty style, topped with a ribbed dome. Inside, only Saladin's stone coffin remains, covered with a cloth inscribed with verses from the Quran. The original site was once a madrasa, later converted into a mausoleum, and is now an open small park with a solemn and simple environment. Images 7-20, Old City of Damascus and the Umayyad Mosque

Azm Palace is a representative work of Islamic architecture in Syria, commissioned by As'ad Pasha al-Azm, the governor of Damascus, in 1750. The palace is located in the old city of Damascus, adjacent to the Umayyad Mosque. The overall architecture is divided into the residential area "Haramlik" and the official area "Salamlik," showcasing the characteristics of traditional Ottoman-era Damascus houses. The main structure is built with limestone, sandstone, and marble, featuring a large fountain in the courtyard and interior decorations with Islamic-style wood carvings and painted ceilings. During the 1925 Syrian revolt against French rule, the palace was severely damaged by French forces. After restoration, it won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983. It now serves as the Syrian Museum of Popular Arts, recreating 18th-century local life scenes through its exhibits. The building was featured on Syrian banknotes from 1976 to 1978, becoming a symbol of the nation's cultural heritage.

Images 1-6: The Church of Saint Ananias is located in the old city of Damascus, the capital of Syria. It is one of the oldest Christian churches in the ancient city, believed to be over 2,000 years old, and holds significant importance in Christian tradition. The church is closely linked to biblical stories. According to tradition, the early Christian apostle Saint Paul (originally named Saul) was struck blind by a bright light on his way to Damascus. He was later baptized and had his sight restored by a local Christian named Ananias. This event is considered a pivotal moment in Christian history. The church was built on the site of Ananias’s former residence, with some areas located underground, believed to house Ananias’s remains. Inside, Byzantine-style decorations are preserved, such as sail vault domes and wooden seats, creating a solemn and peaceful atmosphere. P1P2: Three panels depict the scenes of Apostle Paul’s sudden blindness, Ananias restoring Paul’s sight, and Paul’s escape from the Damascus city walls in a basket. P5: A statue of Ananias baptizing Paul. Images 7-10: Straight Street, an ancient street within the old city of Damascus, is about 1,500 meters long and 26 meters wide. It dates back to the Roman period, around the 1st century BC, making it over 2,000 years old. This street runs east to west through the ancient city and was the main traffic artery of the city at the time. It remains in use today, showcasing Damascus’s long-standing heritage as an ancient city. Images 11-12: The Eastern Gate of Damascus, located at the eastern end of Straight Street, also known as the Gate of the Sun, is the only surviving Roman city gate. Images 13-14: The Window of Saint Paul. According to the Bible, after Saint Paul was baptized in Damascus and began preaching, he was pursued and escaped by being lowered in a basket from a window on the city wall. Early Christian tradition holds that this window is located next to the Bab Kisan gate on the southeast side of Damascus. Later, the Saint Paul Church was built near Bab Kisan, consecrated in 1939, with some stones sourced from Bab Kisan. The window next to Bab Kisan is regarded as the “Window of Saint Paul,” an important Christian relic attracting many pilgrims and tourists. Images 15-20: The Old City of Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In 1979, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and was added to the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2013 due to threats from war. The Old City of Damascus was established around 3000 BC and has witnessed the rise and fall of many empires, including the Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Arab Empire, and Ottoman Empire. In the 15th century BC, the Arameans established a kingdom here. By the 10th century BC, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Aram-Damascus, later conquered by Alexander the Great. In 636 AD, it was occupied by Muslims, and in 661 AD, it became the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate, entering its golden age.
