Bipenggou|3-Hour Drive from Chengdu, Only 20°C in Summer
When summer heat makes you want to escape to the mountains, here’s a cool secret spot just three hours from Chengdu—Sichuan’s Bipenggou! Nestled on the northern foothills of Mount Siguniang, this highland valley is known as the “Little Switzerland of Western Sichuan.” The average summer temperature is only about 20°C, and the mountain breeze carries the chill of snow-capped peaks, making it far more comfortable than staying in an air-conditioned room.
⛰️ Why must you visit Bipenggou in June?
Bipenggou is truly the most underrated summer retreat in Western Sichuan—less crowded than Mount Siguniang and closer than Daocheng:
✅ Very close: A 3.5-4 hour self-drive from Chengdu, perfect for a weekend round trip without rushing
✅ Just the right coolness: Summer average temperature around 20°C, about 10 degrees cooler than Chengdu, you’ll need a blanket at night
✅ All the scenery you want: Snow mountains, alpine lakes, forests, waterfalls, meadows, red stone beaches—all in one trip
✅ Fewer crowds, more beauty: Not yet overrun by tour groups, walking on the boardwalk you’ll hear only the wind and water
✅ Relaxed pace: Stroll and take photos at your leisure, no need to rush or queue
June in Bipenggou is breathtakingly beautiful. The water of Longwang Lake is as blue and reflective as a mirror, perfectly mirroring the snow mountains. Panyang Lake’s water is so clear you can see every stone at the bottom. The red stone beach is covered with red moss, creating a stunning contrast with the snow mountains. The alpine meadow at Swallow Rock Nest blooms with wildflowers, and standing by the lake, you won’t want to blink.
🗺️ Suggested itinerary
Bipenggou is a valley you walk up along one path. We recommend 1 day or 2 days 1 night, here’s an easy and essential route:
Day 1 (One-day trip): Depart Chengdu → Take sightseeing bus at park entrance → Longwang Lake → Shanghaizi (transfer to electric cart) → Panyang Lake → Swallow Rock Nest → Return the same way
Day 2 (Two-day trip): Enter the valley in the afternoon and stay overnight inside the park, then visit the core spots early next morning when it’s less crowded
🌟 Must-visit spots in Bipenggou
1️⃣ Longwang Lake “The Blue Mirror Reflecting Snow Mountains”
The first lake after taking the sightseeing bus into the valley. The water is as clear as a mirror. In June, the lakeside is shaded by green trees, and the snow mountains reflect perfectly on the water surface, making it hard to tell which is real or reflected. Some rhododendrons still bloom in June, their pink and white flowers contrasting beautifully with the blue-green water, like a clean painter’s palette. Walking along the wooden boardwalk around the lake, you’ll see the Longwang Lake waterfall flowing from one side, with the sound of rushing water and moist air all around. 👶 Tip for families: Longwang Lake is about 2,900 meters in elevation, most people won’t feel altitude effects, and strollers can easily navigate the boardwalk.
2️⃣ Panyang Lake “The Emerald Alpine Lake”
The most photogenic spot in Bipenggou, at about 3,600 meters elevation. The lake water is a transparent blue-green, like a huge emerald set between snow mountains and forests. In June, the meadow by the lake is freshly green, yaks graze leisurely by the shore, and the pyramid-shaped snow mountain reflects perfectly on the water. Walking around the lake, the water color changes with the angle—deep areas are dark blue, shallow parts are bright green—every shot looks amazing.
3️⃣ Red Stone Beach “Nature’s Red Paintbrush”
A signature landscape of Bipenggou. The stones in the valley are covered with a layer of red moss. In June, the stream flows through the red stones, and the contrast of red rocks, white water splashes, and distant snow mountains looks like an oil painting. Walking along the boardwalk, you’ll see red stones of all sizes covering the riverbed, with the red color intensifying deeper in. No filter needed for photos here.
4️⃣ Swallow Rock Nest “Wildflower Carpet at the Foot of Snow Mountains”
The highest spot in the park, about 3,800 meters elevation. In June, the alpine meadow blooms with wildflowers in yellow, purple, and white, spreading like a carpet all the way to the snow mountain base. Standing on the meadow, you look up to the snow mountains that never melt, glaciers shining blue-white in the sunlight. The wind blowing down from the mountains is chilling, a completely different world from the summer below. 👶 Tip for families: The altitude is high, walk slowly and avoid running or jumping. Rest when tired.
5️⃣ Nam Lake “A Little Emerald Hidden in the Forest”
Smaller but quieter than Panyang Lake, with jade-green water surrounded by pristine forest. In June, the trees by the lake shine bright green, and sunlight filters through the canopy creating sparkling light spots on the water. Much less crowded than Panyang Lake, find a quiet corner to sit and listen only to the wind and birdsong, feeling completely peaceful.
6️⃣ Shanghaizi “Snow Mountain Viewing Platform at the Transfer Station”
The end point of the sightseeing bus and the transfer station for electric carts to Panyang Lake. In June, standing on the platform at Shanghaizi, you can see the entire valley’s snow mountains lined up, with a wide-open view that lifts your spirits. There are restaurants and shops here to rest and recharge before heading further up.
7️⃣ Lixiaolu “Western Sichuan’s Version of the Duku Highway”
The G662 road from Lixian to Bipenggou is called the Sichuan version of the “Duku Highway.” In June, the forests along the way are lush green, with alpine meadows and wildflowers on both sides. We recommend driving yourself; there are many scenic viewpoints along the road where you can stop and take photos. This stretch alone is worth half your fuel cost.
