After settling on the south shore, spend the afternoon by the lake doing nothing at all. That day by the lake, I met a Tibetan Mastiff tied up at a herder’s door. It looked fierce but was actually very lazy. I squatted beside it for ten minutes, and it didn’t even lift an eyelid. ▸ Day 3 / West Shore of Qinghai Lake - Bird Island Direction In June, migratory birds are still around Bird Island. Bar-headed geese and brown-headed gulls fly low over the lake, occasionally diving into the water. In the distance, you can see a few black dots on the lake surface—those are yaks swimming. It’s a 40-minute drive from downtown; I recommend going in the morning when it’s less crowded and the light is perfect. The entire monastery is built on a mountain, with tiered halls and golden roofs dazzling in the sunlight. The most stunning is the Great Golden Roof Hall, with a roof made entirely of pure gold—rumored to use hundreds of kilograms of gold. Hand-Pulled Lamb A must-try! It’s incredibly fragrant, with no gamey taste. The meat is very tender. Dip it in pepper and salt and eat it with your hands—it’s so satisfying. I usually don’t eat much lamb, but I ate a whole pound by myself. Qinghai Local Hot Pot Completely different from Sichuan hot pot, this uses a copper pot filled with lamb, beef, meatballs, and vegetables. The broth is very fresh and gets more flavorful the longer it cooks. It’s perfect for winter but also very comfortable to eat in summer. Niangpi (Cold Noodles) Xining’s niangpi is delicious and different from Shaanxi’s version—thicker and chewier, with a fragrant, tangy, and spicy sauce. A bowl in summer is very appetizing. Sweet Fermented Barley Drink Made from highland barley, it’s sweet with a slight alcoholic aroma and served cold. Drinking a bowl in summer is very refreshing—I had one every day. Milk Egg Fermented Rice Highly recommended! Made by cooking milk with eggs, fermented rice, raisins, and peanuts. It’s sweet and fragrant, great for breakfast or a late-night snack. ⚠️ Important tips for visiting Xining 1. Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! The UV rays on the plateau are very strong. I didn’t apply sunscreen on my first day and got sunburned in half a day. Use high-SPF sunscreen and wear a hat, sunglasses, and a mask for physical protection. 2. Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! The plateau is very dry. I had a nosebleed the first night. Bring moisturizing skincare products, lip balm, and drink plenty of water. 3. Avoid strenuous exercise When you first arrive, don’t run or jump. Walk slowly to give your body time to adjust and avoid altitude sickness. 4. Bring warm clothes The temperature difference between day and night is huge. Bring a thick jacket because it gets really cold at night. 5. Respect local customs Qinghai has many ethnic minorities. Respect local customs, remove your hat when entering temples, and don’t take photos indiscriminately.
