Christmas Feeling
Christmas markets are always a lot of fun. Festive atmosphere, Christmas lights, smells and sounds. Wonderful.
The centerpiece is of course a Christmas tree, it's what everyone wants to see. There is ice skating, stalls to buy gifts, food and drinks, mulled wine and lots and lots of people.
You can see the different lights, and decorations at night and it really adds a touch of festivity to the evening.

Beautiful Cafe
This appeared high on Googles list of cafes in Debrecen. And I can see why. Really sweet attentive customer service, festive decorations and a warm atmosphere.
The pumpkin spice cinnamon latte was divine. Really hit the spot on a cold winter's day. Excellent eggs benny too although a tad small. Really cheap and filling.
The decoration was very photogenic and added to the experience

Amazing Cathedral
Beautiful and historical cathedral in the city centre. I used my civil servant discount which makes it even better.
You can walk around and admire the interior, stained-glass windows, pews and alter. Or just have a quiet moment of contemplation and prayer.
Further upstairs there is the historical church bell and original timber roof. And at the rooftop you get magnificent sweeping views of downtown Debrecen. You can see the trams coming and going, the European architecture and people going about their business.
From outside the cathedral is magnificent. Amazing photo opportunities from close or faraway and there is a small park you can sit in and admire the architecture.

Beautiful European City
Debrecen is a very walkable city. Even though it is considered Hungarys second city, it is still quite peaceful and it's a great weekend option for visiting.
Easily reached by train, it's quite convenient to get here. As you walk around the city you'll see tons of European style architecture with intricate designs and pastel colours. Beautiful. I like how they maintain the older facade while updating the interior with modern stores and brands
It's a cultural city with churches, synagogues, museums, galleries, parks and more. It's a city you'll come back to time and again.
It's also an incredibly photogenic city too. You'll never be without a photo opportunity.

Michelin star + curly-haired pig + walls full of liquor = IKON
A friend recommended a local restaurant in Debrecen that serves curly-haired pork. Upon arrival, I discovered it had just been included in the 2025 Michelin Guide—instantly increasing my anticipation for dinner.
The restaurant wasn't large, but it was very cozy. The waiter quickly seated me, and I ordered the signature curly-haired pork set meal. While waiting, I looked around; two walls were lined with bottles of various brands, arranged in a pleasing, eclectic way. I don't know much about wine, but I was captivated by the immersive atmosphere.
The curly-haired pork arrived quickly. To be honest, it wasn't as amazing as I'd imagined—my friend said it was the best in Hungary, but tastes can be subjective. However, it definitely didn't disappoint. The meat was firm, the flavor authentic, and I felt quite satisfied afterward.
The most surprising thing was the price. Slightly higher than the average restaurant, but far from being "Michelin-starred outrageously expensive," it offered excellent value.
If you want to experience authentic Hungarian flavors but don't want anything too formal, this place is worth a visit.

Hungary's second-largest city hides a university founded in 1538!
Today, I had the chance to visit the University of Debrecen in Hungary, the largest and oldest top university in the country. Established in 1538, it ranks 563rd in the QS World University Rankings for 2026, with 13 faculties covering all disciplines including engineering, agriculture, medicine, business, humanities, and sciences.
Medicine is the university's brightest highlight. As the first university medical school in Central Europe, its diploma is recognized by the World Health Organization, and graduates can qualify as physicians in the EU and the United States. Currently, the university has nearly 30,000 students, including 7,600 from over 130 countries, offering more than 80 programs taught entirely in English, reflecting a high degree of internationalization.
The university boasts rich resources, with a library collection of over 6 million items, making it the second-largest library in Hungary. It also hosts the nation's first university esports division. The university maintains close cooperation with China, establishing a Confucius Institute in 2019 and joining the "Belt and Road" University Alliance in 2024. Here, you gain not only a first-class education but also a passport to the world.

Debrecen, the city center is nice
Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city, the regional centre of the Northern Great Plain region.
It's home to the University of Debrecen, the largest university in Hungary.
The main sites in the city center are the City Downtown, Reformed Great Church, (Nagytemplom), Déri Museum,
Csokonai theatre and a few churches.
The beautiful fountains are refreshing in the summer heat.
It was nice walking around again and taking photos.

There is an entrance fee of aprox 600HUF. You buy it from the ground store. Then the stairs are through the right side of the bar. You have to scan the QR code on your tickets. Watch your forehead if you re tall when climbing the stairs. Final ascent is a bit scary if you are afraid of heights because you see through the metal stairs down to the ground.
Once on top, there is not much to see, because in Debrecen in general there s not much to see. You can take a nice picture of the stadium near by and the aquapark on the other side.

Debrecen Zoo & amusement park
#europetrip
A small zoo which has all the 'popular' animals (lions, tigers, giraffes etc) along with some unique ones: local pigeons, white peafowl and Minnesotan minipigs, the latter you can even buy. The amusement park is only suitable for little kids but even adults can enjoy the train ride that starts from the edge of the amusement park and takes you through a wooded area, where you can spot some deers.
There's a great burger place between the amusement park and the zoo where you can sit outside.

Deri Museum
#europetrip
This is the "must see" museum if you're visiting this city. No only a beautiful building but an interesting assembly of both works of art and ancient cultural artifacts. This place exists thanks to the beneficence of Frigyes Deri who in 1920 donated his lifelong collection to the State.
The museum exhibits his particular interest of Egyptian, Samuri and 15th to 18th Century Christian European artefacts. The paintings are organised into groups reflecting common characteristics;
Portraits, Landscapes, Still Life.
I found the supplementary exhibition regarding Hungarian ancient beliefs concerning death, burial and the afterlife particularly interesting. It's displayed in a darkened room with gentle mystic music playing in the background.
Perhaps the good weather had deterred people from spending time inside. It was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.
Lovely exhibition and fantastic value at 900 huf for pensioner.

Great Forest Park
#europetrip
In my opinion this is the best part of Debrecen. In one park you have everything you can imagine-aqua park, shops, restaurants, tower, zoo and university. Picturesque park to walk around with a pond that has amazing fishes and turtles.
Access is easy but not so many parking spots. We were lucky to find a place to park in the underground parking garage.

Wellington Coffee & pie
#europetrip
As a Kiwi I think I can talk with some experience on what constitutes a good pie. Wellington has nailed it. Big time. Great range, always different choices on the menu, alongside awesome sausages rolls, ANZAC biscuits, cakes and heaps of other goodies.
I've made the pilgrimage all the way from Budapest, just for lunch. Was back again on the weekend with a group of fellow Antipodeans who were equally impressed. Nice NZ wine selection also and heaps of craft beers, alongside great coffee too. 100% recommended.

Frida Cafe
#europetrip
The food was very tasty, the drinks were good. (the only thing was that in the smootie were frozen pieces of fruits)
The service, on the other hand, was very poor, it took 50 min for everything to be served. The dishes came not at the same time, even if they were on the same order.
People who ordered after us had their food earlier than us.
Still a good place, not bad but not the best.

The place is very aesthetic, and picturesque!!!
Highly recommended if you ever visit Debrecen

🌿🌵A small botanical garden in Drebesen, Hungary.
Hello everyone, today for those who love nature and want to visit Hungary, I would like to recommend a student city where many Thai students come to study, Drebesen. It is very convenient to take the train for only three hours. The city is lush and green, and there is a botanical garden and summer trees for you to visit. The entrance fee is only 50 baht. The reason it is cheap is because it is part of the university.
To get there, just take Tram 1 from the city center and get off at the Egytem stop. Come visit us!
