Don't want to be crammed in crowds during Mid-Autumn Festival? A small town local's experience proves it's a great option!
This Mid-Autumn Festival, I plan to do the opposite. Hotels in popular cities are three times more expensive, high-speed rail tickets are hard to come by, and at tourist attractions you can only see the backs of people's heads. Instead, I'll choose a few less-visited small towns and explore at my own pace. Here are 8 places that are less crowded, have delicious food, and are affordable.
01 Hangzhou | Zhejiang
West Lake is beautiful, but you won't be able to squeeze onto the Broken Bridge during Mid-Autumn Festival. My advice is to get up early, ⏰ arrive at Su Causeway before 6:30 am, when the morning mist hasn't dissipated and the lake is so quiet it feels like you have the place to yourself. After 9 am, when the crowds surge in, leave immediately.
Xixi National Wetland Park is a hidden gem in Hangzhou. Take a rowboat through the reeds, and the boatman will point out egrets.
📍 Enter from the Zhoujiacun entrance; there are half the number of people compared to the Longxiang Bridge entrance. In autumn, the reeds are just turning white, so you don't have to fight for a good spot to take photos.
The China Umbrella Museum is west of Gongchen Bridge. It's free, but closed on Mondays, so don't waste your time. Inside, you can see how to open an oil-paper umbrella; kids will love it. After strolling around, take a walk along Xiaohe Straight Street and grab a bowl of Pian'erchuan noodles.
Prince Bay Park is a sea of tulips in spring, but quieter in autumn. Picnic mats on the lawn make it perfect for families with elderly members.
⚠️ Traffic restrictions apply around West Lake during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Taking the subway to Longxiang Bridge and then walking is the safest option.
02 Beijing
For the Forbidden City, tickets for the Mid-Autumn Festival need to be booked seven days in advance; don't force yourself if you can't get them. The Summer Palace is more relaxed. Enter from the North Gate, climb Longevity Hill, and Kunming Lake will unfold below.
⏰ After 4 PM, the sunlight shines obliquely, making the outline of the Tower of Buddhist Incense particularly clear.
The Temple of Heaven Park is a local hotspot in the morning. Grandpas play with diabolo, and grandmas dance with fans. Enter from the South Gate, walk across the Danbi Bridge, and the Echo Wall area is less crowded.
🍜 Afterwards, go to Ciqikou for douzhi (fermented mung bean juice). If it's your first time, sip slowly.
Beihai Park is best visited in the evening. Rent a boat and row to the foot of the White Pagoda to watch the sunset paint the lake orange.
📍 Enter from the East Gate; it's closest. Don't go around from the South Gate. If there's a moon on Mid-Autumn Festival night, the White Pagoda against the full moon is more worthwhile than any other spot.
⚠️ Beijing experiences significant temperature differences between day and night during Mid-Autumn Festival; bring a light jacket. Take Metro Line 8 directly to the Temple of Heaven; don't take a taxi, the traffic will be unbearable.
03 Dehong|Yunnan
The Meng Huan Golden Pagoda is in Mangshi, a 20-minute taxi ride from the airport.
⏰ The best time to go is around 6 PM, when the pagoda is bathed in the glow of the sunset, offering a panoramic view of the entire Mangshi Basin. Tickets are inexpensive; check the official announcement for details on the day.
It's not as commercialized as Xishuangbanna. The area around the pagoda is quiet, and the sound of the prayer wheels is very soft.
📍 The steps in front of the pagoda are a great spot for panoramic photos; wearing light-colored clothing will enhance the shot.
🍜 Head down to Mangshi Night Market and try the local specialties: Sa Pie (撒撇), Pao Lu Da (泡鲁达), and roasted pork skin. Sa Pie might be a bit unusual for first-timers, as it's quite bitter, but has a sweet aftertaste.
⚠️ Dehong has strong UV rays, so don't skimp on hats and sunglasses.
Suitable for those who want to escape the cold and experience exotic locales. It's still warm here during the Mid-Autumn Festival, so short sleeves are fine. It's not crowded enough to allow you to leisurely stroll around the pagoda without queuing.
04 Yancheng|Jiangsu
Dafeng China Milu Deer Park – the name sounds off the charts, but it's surprisingly good. It's an hour and a half drive from Yancheng city. 🚄 Taking the high-speed train to Yancheng Station and then renting a car is the most convenient option.
⏰ Arrive before 9 AM. The deer herds graze near the wetlands, very close to the boardwalk. Around midday, they retreat into the woods, so you'll only be able to see the grass. The park has electric carts, recommended for families with elderly members or children.
📍 The deer viewing platform is the best spot for photos; a telephoto lens can capture the antlers. The reeds turn yellow in autumn, creating a golden backdrop.
⚠️ Don't feed the deer; they look docile, but they can be aggressive and headbutt.
🍜 Back in the city, have Yancheng egg pancakes with pork tenderloin and crispy crackers—ten yuan is all you can eat. It's not crowded during the Mid-Autumn Festival, making it suitable for families; kids can spend the whole morning watching the deer.
05 Zhanjiang|Guangdong
Huguangyan is a crater lake with crystal-clear, almost greenish water. It's accessible by bus from Zhanjiang city center, or by high-speed rail to Zhanjiang West Station followed by a taxi (about 40 minutes).
⏰ Enter the park at 8 am and walk around the lake for two hours—it's cool.
📍 The best view of the lake is from the viewing platform next to Lengyan Temple; the water is as smooth as a mirror. Bougainvillea is still blooming along the lake in autumn, a beautiful contrast of red and green—no filter needed for photos.
🍜 After leaving the park, head to Chikan Old Street for seafood porridge and steamed rice cakes. Zhanjiang oysters are at their fattest during Mid-Autumn Festival, and the roadside stalls offer better value than restaurants in tourist areas.
⚠️ There are few restaurants inside Huguangyan Scenic Area; bring your own water.
Suitable for those who want to see the water but don't want to go swimming. Zhanjiang is still hot during Mid-Autumn Festival, but there's a breeze by the lake. Not crowded, a pleasant walk around the lake.
06 Xianning|Hubei
The ancient battlefield of Chibi is on the banks of the Yangtze River, about an hour's drive from Xianning city.
🚄 Take the high-speed train to Chibi North Station, then a taxi, about half an hour away.
⏰ Go after 3 PM; the river breeze will be blowing, and it won't be sunny.
📍 The cliff carvings offer views of the Yangtze River; the stones have inscriptions and feel rough to the touch. The scenic area isn't large; you can see everything in two hours.
⚠️ Some performances inside require an additional fee; skip them if you don't want to see them.
🍜 Back in Xianning city, have Heshengqiao chicken soup; the soup is rich and the meat is tender, served with rice. The osmanthus flowers are in bloom here for Mid-Autumn Festival, filling the city with their sweet fragrance. Perfect for a leisurely stroll with parents.
Less crowds, quiet riverside. Standing before the stone carvings, you can imagine the boats that once sailed the river. No need to squeeze in, take your time to enjoy the sights.
07 Jinzhou|Liaoning
Yiwulü Mountain is located in Beizhen, Jinzhou, about a two-hour drive from the city center.
🚄 Take the high-speed train to Jinzhou South Station and then transfer to a bus.
⏰ Mid-October is the best time to visit for autumn foliage. Going during Mid-Autumn Festival is a bit early, but less crowded.
📍 Guanyin Pavilion is an old building at the foot of the main peak. Climbing it offers panoramic views of the valley. The stone steps are steep, so wear non-slip shoes.
⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so bring enough water.
🍜 Enjoy Jinzhou barbecue on the way down. The small skewers with garlic chili sauce are unique. The Goubangzi smoked chicken is also worth taking home. Suitable for hiking enthusiasts, with significant elevation gain throughout.
Lushan Mountain isn't fully red yet during Mid-Autumn Festival, but it's a tranquil green tinged with yellow. When you get tired, sit on a rock and listen to the wind rustling through the pine forest.
08 Beihai | Guangxi
Weizhou Island Mid-Autumn Festival ferry tickets must be booked in advance; ⚠️ buying them on the day is basically impossible.
🚄 Take the high-speed train to Beihai Station, then take a taxi to the International Passenger Port. Renting an electric scooter on the island is the most convenient option, costing only a few tens of yuan per day.
📍 Crocodile Mountain Crater is the core attraction; walk along the cliff face, watching the waves crash against the rocks.
⏰ Go to Dripstone Peak at 5 PM to watch the sunset; the sun dips into the sea, changing colors from orange to purple.
Beihai Silver Beach has fine sand, but it's less crowded during Mid-Autumn Festival than during the summer holidays. Go at 7 AM, and there are only footprints on the beach.
🍜 Eat crab rice noodles and sweet soup in Qiaogang Town; the Vietnamese rice rolls are also authentic.
Suitable for couples and families with children. Stay overnight on the island and go beachcombing the next day.
⚠️ Weizhou Island ferry schedules are affected by weather, so please allow for flexibility.
Of these 8 places, I most want to revisit Dehong and Yancheng. One to see the Golden Pagoda, the other to see the Père David's deer. Avoid the crowds this Mid-Autumn Festival; choose a less crowded, smaller city and enjoy a leisurely trip. Which ones have you been to? Share your thoughts in the comments.
