✅ Core Tips for the Trip
Best travel time: June to September (July-August is peak season, September offers better autumn scenery); April-May / October are off-peak but require strong warm clothing.
Transportation: Prefer 4-6 person carpool or charter (SUV / business van), experienced drivers familiar with routes, 10 times less hassle than self-driving; self-driving requires snow chains / satellite phone (complex road conditions in uninhabited areas).
Ticket booking: Mogao Caves A-class tickets must be booked 30 days in advance on the official website (238 RMB, includes 8 caves + digital movie), if unavailable choose B-class + special caves; Chaka / Chaerhan / Danxia tickets book 1-3 days in advance on Trip.com.
🎒 Must-Bring List for Locals (in order of priority)
1. Documents & Electronics
Must bring: Original ID card (required for attractions/accommodation), student ID / military ID (half price), driver’s license (for self-driving/charter verification).
Electronics: Power bank ≥ 20,000mAh, offline maps (essential in no-signal areas), camera / drone (Emerald Lake / Heidushan require prior registration, drones prohibited at Mogao Caves).
2. Clothing & Protection (Three essentials for plateau survival)
Clothing: Layered dressing: quick-dry underwear + fleece / light down jacket + windproof shell; 2 pairs of long pants (to protect against grass insects / desert thorns); 1 long skirt (for photos at salt lakes / Danxia)
Don’t bring only summer clothes! Day-night temperature difference is 20°C, wear light down jacket in mornings/evenings, remove shell jacket at noon.
Sun protection: SPF50+ sunscreen (reapply every 2 hours), sun mask / arm sleeves, wide-brim hat, sunglasses (UV rays are 1.5 times stronger than plains)
Physical sun protection > chemical sunscreen, no shade in desert/salt lake, must wear mask or risk peeling skin.
Footwear: Comfortable sports shoes (for grassland / Danxia hiking), desert shoe covers (to prevent sand in Mingsha Mountain), high waterproof shoe covers (to prevent salt crystal scratches at salt lakes)
Don’t wear new shoes! Walking over 10,000 steps daily, new shoes will cause blisters and ruin your trip.
3. Y-Products & Skincare (Northwest dryness essentials)
Altitude sickness: Rhodiola (start 3 days before), Plateau Relief (take locally), portable oxygen bottle (cheaper in Xining).
Common meds: Stomach medicine (local food is salty and spicy), cold medicine, motion sickness pills, band-aids + iodine, insect bite cream.
Skincare: Lip balm (must-have! Dry lips ruin photos), moisturizing masks (one per day), body lotion, hand cream.
4. Other Essentials
Thermos cup (drinking hot water helps altitude sickness), wet wipes / tissues (toilets in attractions are basic), snacks / bottled water (for long trips).
⚠️ Locals’ Tested Pitfall Avoidance (all the pitfalls we’ve encountered)
1. Itinerary Pitfalls
Don’t rush: Daily driving 3-5 hours, don’t pack too many spots, leave enough time for photos/rest, avoid rushing through.
Heidushan / Tosu Lake and other ecologically fragile areas: must hire local guides familiar with routes, heavy fines for unauthorized driving.
Chaka Salt Lake: Buy combined ticket for entrance + small train, walking into the lake is exhausting and less photogenic; after 4 PM light is softer, best mirror effect.
U-shaped road: Only shoot in safe areas, strictly no standing in the middle of the road, many large trucks, very dangerous.
2. Spending Pitfalls
Avoid low-price tours: Carpool/charter under 2800 RMB for 7 days always include shopping or hidden costs, better to spend 200 RMB more for a worry-free trip.
Accommodation: Book one month in advance during peak season (July-August), Dachaidan / Dunhuang / Lenghu have limited rooms, don’t look for last-minute stays.
Food: Avoid expensive meals inside attractions, go to local favorite restaurants in towns/counties, must-try apricot skin water, hand-pulled lamb, yak yogurt.
3. Photo Pitfalls
Salt Lake: Don’t walk barefoot! Salt crystals scratch feet, wear waterproof shoe covers + light-colored long skirt for best photos.
Mingsha Mountain: Black camisole + red scarf, shoot flying silhouette at sunset, atmosphere guaranteed.
Oil Town: Leather jacket + ripped jeans, easily nail the post-apocalyptic style photos.
📸 Photo Formulas (even beginners can get great shots)
Chaerhan Salt Lake: Stand on the “Wan Zhang Salt Bridge,” use the bridge for depth, shoot the “Green Apple Juice” lake surface, cover face with sunglasses, maximize atmosphere.
Heidushan: Wear black clothes, stand next to black Yadan formations, shoot back or side profile, add “Ink-colored Moon” caption, very classy.
Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Lake: At sunset, ride a camel for silhouette shots, or shoot Crescent Lake and sand dunes together from above, desert romance at its best.
Qinghai Lake: Wear a white long skirt, stand by the lake under prayer flags, shoot side profile / running shots, truly the “Plateau Sapphire.”
