Kaş works best as a base on the Lycian Coast: a small harbor town with a walkable center, old houses, flower-filled streets, a marina, a lighthouse, boat routes, a strong diving scene and mountains rising above the blue water. I would give Kaş at least 2 nights if you want time for both the sea and a slow walk through town. The center is easy and enjoyable to explore on foot. You will find narrow streets, bougainvillea, old facades, souvenir shops, cafes, small squares, monuments and quick access to the harbor. Kaş does not need a strict sightseeing plan: you can simply walk from the flower streets to the marina, then to the lighthouse, then back into town for coffee, dinner or choosing a boat trip. The sea side is one of the main reasons to stay longer. From Kaş, it is easy to take boat trips, routes to Kekova, diving tours, nearby bays, beach clubs and sea platforms. This place is more about clear blue water, boats and active sea plans than one long sandy beach in the center. Kaş also has a historical layer: the modern town stands on the site of ancient Antiphellos. In and around town, you can find Lycian tombs, the King’s Tomb, an ancient theatre and old stone details. It adds depth to a simple walk: you move through everyday streets, but keep meeting traces of ancient Lycia. ✨️ Travel tip: choose accommodation near the center or marina if you want to walk everywhere. Getting to Kas You can get to Kas from two airports – Dalaman and Antalya. However, getting there by public transportation, especially from Dalaman (as there is no public transportation), is problematic: from Antalya Airport, you need to take tram T1A or bus #600 to the bus station. From the bus station, you can travel to Kas. Schedules are subject to change. Therefore, the easiest way to get to Kas from the airport is by booking a transfer. Hotels In Kas, you can book a hotel either in the city or on the peninsula – depending on your needs. If you don't want to spend evenings strolling around the city or visiting cafes, and would rather spend time at the hotel/by the pool/by the sea with a beautiful view, then choose a hotel on the peninsula. However, if you prefer a more active vacation or don't want to constantly spend money on taxis/wait for a bus, I recommend staying in the city proper. In the city, consider the Luna Kas or Hera Hotel, and on the peninsula, the Villa Tamara. However, when choosing a hotel, consider your preferences, reviews, and location. Mobile Communications Buying a physical SIM card isn't cost-effective; an eSIM is easier and cheaper. Consider your budget and needs. Be sure to check if your phone supports eSIM before purchasing. Currency It's best to bring dollars and exchange them for lira in Turkey. DO NOT exchange them at the airport—it's not cost-effective, especially if you don't need public transportation to Kas. The most profitable exchange office in Kas is the SILA Jewelry Store. You can also get a Letim card, but you'll see the commission when you transfer money. Payment will be via QR code; a physical card will not be available. Pharmacies: All pharmacies have the address of the pharmacy on duty posted on the counter. Taxi There are no taxi apps in Kas, Kalkan, Antalya, Fethiye, Kemer, and other cities on the southern coast of Turkey. Panu - burgers, very filling sandwiches, granola, toast, with a beautiful view. Oxygen - lavender cocktail at the new Marina. Pells (expensive) - breakfast, beautiful view. Good bread, even croquemadame. Several breakfast options, including sparkling wine and English-style. Linkia Coffee - Coffee shop, they roast their own coffee, the largest menu of coffee drinks. Aesthetically pleasing, beautiful, 40 minutes by car, in a village above Kalkan. Volk Byhera Sempati - Beef Cheeks Zaika - Turkish cuisine, a wonderful view of the yachts in the marina, the most expensive restaurant in town. Masuk - Classic Turkish restaurant: meat, breakfasts, and a varied menu. Sunrise Breakfast Kaş - A large and hearty Turkish breakfast near the marina. 3 minutes by car, or within walking distance. Olive Garden Kaş Kahvaltı - Turkish breakfast, beautiful, green, and cozy. 8 minutes by car from the center, filling, delicious, beautiful grounds. Hold and Bite - burgers with truffle sauce Beaches The most important and beautiful beach is Kaputaş (entrance 50 TL, umbrella 230 TL, hammock 230 TL – prices subject to change). It's a 20-25-minute bus ride from the bus station. Halk - Kas belediyesi Halk, or simply Halk, or the public city beach, is free. Located on a peninsula, take the bus from the stop near the mosque. There's plenty of space, a cafe, sun loungers, and umbrellas. The entrance is gently sloping and pebbly. Beach Clubs You can choose a beach club in Kas or go to Kalkan. Almost at the very end of the peninsula, to the left of the Kumsal Hotel, there's an abandoned hotel with a water park (next to Villa Tamara). 4. The amphitheater (to watch the sunset), located at the junction of the peninsula and Kaş. 5. Walk to the new marina. 6. Kaş is an incredibly beautiful Turkish city with a Greek vibe. If you're planning a short trip to this city, I've put together an itinerary for you to spend unforgettable days in this cozy place. Day 1 In the morning, I suggest strolling around the city, exploring its streets, and taking photos on Süleyman Sandıkçı Sk Street, near the harbor. There, near the harbor, are boats moored and people selling excursions. I highly recommend (depending on the price and the boat) taking a boat tour to the sunken city of Kekova, disembarking in Simena. After the walk and lunch, we head to the stop near the mosque and take a bus to the peninsula and Halk Beach. There, we rent an umbrella and a sun lounger to avoid sunburn. In the evening, we dine at a sempati (veal cheeks). Day 2 We'll have breakfast at the hotel and depart in the morning for an excursion to Kekova. A hearty lunch awaits us on the boat (choose between chicken or fish, but I recommend the fish). We'll enjoy the walk, swim in the clear sea, and buy ice cream in Simena. We'll return to the hotel in the late afternoon. We'll have dinner in Ege and buy baklava at Nur Pastaneleri along the way. Day 3 We'll take a bus to Villa Tamara on the peninsula and buy a day pass there. The day pass requires a deposit, so we can use it for both lunch and dinner. We'll enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek island, the sea, and the pool. We'll take beautiful, memorable photos. As sunset approaches, we'll head to an abandoned water park to catch the sun. Day 4 In the morning, we'll go to the bus station and head to Kaputas Beach. Entrance, sun loungers, and umbrellas are not included, but they're not very expensive. We'll swim and have lunch. Don't forget to take a photo of the beach from above before we descend the steps. After lunch, we'll return to the hotel, rest, and in the late afternoon, prepare for the climb up the mountain (the climb takes a little over an hour, the descent about 40 minutes). St Nicholas Church is an ancient East Roman basilica church in the ancient city of Myra, which was originally used as a house of worship for Orthodox Christians between the 5th and 12th centuries.It was rebuilt several times due to weather, earthquakes, floods and war during the period. The building we see today was built on the foundation of an older church after St Nicholas died (Dec 6, 343)to protect his tomb and honour his memory. It is located in the main square of Demre which is around 220 kilometers 140 minutes drive from Antalya and is open daily from 0830-1900. Wall paintings of the 12th century about scenes including the life story of St Nicholas in the sepulture located in the south side of the church, he is also known as Santa Claus who is said to bring gifts during the late evening and overnight hours to childrens.

In Demre lived, served, and was originally buried Saint Nicholas—the very man who later became the inspiration for the modern-day Santa Claus! He secretly helped the poor and defended the unjustly condemned, and after his passing, he became one of the most revered saints. An ancient 4th-century Byzantine church is also preserved here. We had already visited the Church of Saint Nicholas on a previous trip, so we decided to skip it this time around. Plus, tickets cost €17 per person, which we felt was a bit pricey for a short visit. However, for believers and anyone interested in the history of Nicholas the Wonderworker, it's definitely worth checking out. It's a highly significant site, alongside the Italian city of Bari, where his relics are kept today. By the way, entrance to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari is completely free. The Turks, however, certainly know how to capitalize on such a pilgrimage. Aside from the pricey tickets, you'll find tons of themed souvenirs, church candles, and icons sold all around. You won't have to look far—there are plenty of shops (as well as cafes) right across from the church itself. 🏛 Nearby, there is an ancient theater and the famous Lycian tombs carved directly into the cliffs. We only checked them out from the outside since we stopped by after closing time, but if you want to get a closer look, there is an entrance fee to the grounds (€13). 🏠 One more interesting fact about the city: Demre can safely be called a city of greenhouses. There’s a massive number of them here, which is clearly visible in the last photo.

Antalya is one of those rare destinations where you can swim in the Mediterranean in the morning, walk through a Roman city at midday, hike through pine forests in the afternoon and watch the sunset over the coast in the evening. The region is filled with ancient cities, dramatic landscapes, traditional neighborhoods and small coastal villages that deserve much more than a quick stop. 🌊🏛️🌿 1. Start in Kaleiçi — the historic heart of Antalya Begin your trip in Kaleiçi, Antalya’s atmospheric old town. Instead of simply walking through it on the way to the harbor, give yourself a few hours to explore the narrow streets, Ottoman-era houses, small courtyards and old stone buildings. Look for Hadrian’s Gate, the elegant Roman entrance built in honor of Emperor Hadrian, and continue towards the old harbor. The contrast between historic architecture and the deep blue Mediterranean is one of the most beautiful things about Antalya. My tip: visit Kaleiçi early in the morning if you want quieter streets, then return around sunset when the harbor and old buildings take on a completely different atmosphere. 2. Perge — walk through a real ancient city If you enjoy history, don’t skip Perge. This is much more than a few ruins scattered across a field. The ancient city still gives you a sense of its original urban plan, with a long colonnaded street, monumental fountains, baths, an agora, theatre and one of the best-preserved ancient stadiums in the region. Perge was one of the major cities of ancient Pamphylia and later became an important Roman center. Walk down the ancient streets and imagine what this area must have looked like almost two thousand years ago. 3. Aspendos — one of the most impressive Roman theatres in Türkiye Aspendos is probably one of the most recognizable historical sites around Antalya, and for good reason. Its Roman theatre is exceptionally well preserved and could accommodate roughly 15,000–20,000 spectators. The architecture and acoustics are remarkable, but don’t leave immediately after seeing the theatre. The ancient aqueducts, city remains and surrounding landscape are also worth exploring. (Antalya Kültür ve Turizm Müdürlüğü) For photography, the theatre is spectacular, but the ancient aqueduct is one of the details that often gets overlooked. 4. Termessos — the ancient city hidden in the mountains This is the place I would choose if you want something a little different. Unlike the easier-to-reach archaeological sites around Antalya, Termessos sits high in the mountains inside Güllük Dağı National Park. The ruins are surrounded by forest, and the dramatic setting makes the experience feel completely different from visiting an archaeological site on the coast. The ancient theatre overlooking the mountains is particularly impressive. The city also contains temples, an agora, gymnasium, cisterns, tombs and extensive defensive structures. Olympos & Çıralı — where ruins meet the sea Further along the coast, Olympos offers one of Antalya’s most unusual combinations: ancient ruins surrounded by dense vegetation, followed by a beautiful Mediterranean beach. The ruins include remains from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, and the ancient city developed around a river leading towards the sea. Olympos is also connected to a section of the famous Lycian Way. (Antalya Kültür ve Turizm Müdürlüğü) Nearby Çıralı is a much slower-paced alternative to the large resort towns. And after dark, hike up to Chimaera (Yanartaş) to see the natural flames burning from the mountainside. It is one of those experiences that feels almost unreal. 6. Phaselis — ancient ruins with three harbors If you want history without giving up the sea, put Phaselis on your list. The ancient city is surrounded by pine forests and sits beside the Mediterranean, making it possible to combine archaeological exploration with time by the water. It was an important ancient port and is one of the places where Antalya’s history and landscape come together particularly well. Düden Waterfalls — a completely different side of Antalya After so much ancient history, take a break and explore Antalya’s natural side. The Düden waterfalls are among the city’s most recognizable natural attractions, and the lower falls are particularly dramatic because the water eventually plunges directly towards the Mediterranean. This is one of those places where you don’t need a complicated itinerary. Take your time, enjoy the scenery and combine it with an afternoon around the coast. 8. The Mediterranean coast — don’t stop at the famous beaches Antalya’s coastline is full of places worth exploring beyond the major resort beaches. If you have extra time, consider heading towards Kemer, Çıralı, Olympos, Kaş or the smaller coastal areas further west. The scenery changes constantly—from pine-covered mountains dropping into turquoise water to quiet coves and ancient ruins hidden among the trees. And if you’re willing to travel further from the city, the Antalya region opens up even more archaeological treasures, including Myra, Patara, Simena and Xanthos. And don’t underestimate the small family-run restaurants away from the main tourist streets—they can be some of the most memorable meals of the trip. 💡 A few things I wish more first-time visitors knew Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll walk much more than you expect. Start archaeological sites early, especially during the hot months. Keep water with you when visiting ruins such as Termessos. Don’t plan every hour. Some of the best experiences come from stopping at a viewpoint, discovering a small café or taking an unexpected turn down a coastal road. And most importantly, don’t treat Antalya as just a beach destination. Its real magic is the combination of Mediterranean landscapes, thousands of years of history, mountain villages, ancient ruins and everyday Turkish life. You can spend the morning standing inside a Roman theatre, have lunch overlooking the sea, walk through a centuries-old neighborhood in the afternoon and finish the day watching the sunset over the Mediterranean. We missed the planned Antalya Archaeological Museum due to its closure for renovation. Fortunately, the archaeological site of Perge remained open, so we went to visit. Located on the outskirts of Antalya, Perge is one of the oldest and largest ancient cities in Turkey. Even so, like the ancient city of Myra, it only holds a place on the tentative list of World Cultural Heritage sites, which feels like a great injustice. Perge was the seventh and final ancient city we visited on this trip. The feared aesthetic fatigue never appeared. Each ancient city in Turkey, shaped by thousands of years of history, has its own stories and unique features that never get tiresome. Unlike other ancient cities, Perge is mostly flat, stretching from north to south, except for a slight slope at the northern acropolis. As far as the eye can see, it’s a vast expanse of wilderness scattered with towering Roman columns and ruined walls, empty and desolate. At the entrance to the site, a large area is fenced off with blue panels for construction. Many ruins, including the great theater, are under repair and closed to the public. Following the guide, we went straight to the huge ancient stadium—the only one of its kind on this trip and one of the two best-preserved ancient stadiums in Turkey. The stadium is about 230 meters long, oval-shaped, and could hold over 10,000 spectators. Most of the main structure has long since collapsed and been swallowed by wild grass. What remains well preserved is a small section in the center with the arena and animal rooms (photo 1). Standing outside the stadium, you can see a neat row of arched gates extending into the distance (photo 2). They perfectly showcase the stadium’s architectural style and grand appearance, allowing you to vividly imagine the bustling scene of vendors selling goods and spectators resting there. The cheers and noise of 10,000 people nearly 2,000 years ago seem to still echo. Leaving the stadium, we arrived at the massive ancient Roman baths. Room by room, we saw the dry steam rooms (photo 3, with brick pillars visible on the ground where the original marble floor has long disappeared, revealing the hot air channels below), the warm water pools after the dry steam rooms (photo 4, a transition before the cold water), and the cold water pools (photo 5, with small steps leading to the drainage pool in the corner). Walking and listening, we tried to reconstruct the luxury of these Roman-era baths from their remains. At this moment, imagination was running low. Continuing with the guide, two prominent round towers appeared ahead (photo 6). We learned these are the best-preserved city gates from the ancient Greek period, over 2,300 years old (their prominence is well deserved). This is the southern gate of the ancient city. From here, the city proper begins. Right next to this tower-like gate is a huge curved plaza (perhaps what we would call the agora). We stopped in front of a curved high wall at the plaza’s edge (photo 7). The guide pointed to the recessed arched niches, explaining that life-size or twice life-size marble statues of gods, kings, or nobles once stood inside. The broken bases on the ground were also used to hold statues. Now, after thousands of years of weathering and collapse, dozens of statues that were once buried in the soil have been moved to the Antalya Archaeological Museum, leaving only this lonely wall to spark the imagination. Next, the central avenue stretching to the foot of the acropolis came into view (photos 8 and 11). On both sides of the avenue were rows of shops and columns in front of their entrances (photos 15 and 16). The guide said that to block the strong Mediterranean sun, the shops and columns on both sides were covered with marble colonnades. Most unique was the water system in the middle of the central avenue, which has a one-of-a-kind two-level structure—the upper level served as a scenic feature and summer cooling system, while the lower level was the city’s water supply and drainage system (photo 9). On the day we visited, workers were cleaning the central waterway, giving us a rare close-up view of the two-level water channels and the flow of water—lucky us. The source of the central waterway was the fountain outlet (photo 12, featuring a marble river god resembling a toad lying on a high platform). This spot was likely the city center over 2,000 years ago. Climbing to a high point (photo 17) and looking north, you see the acropolis ruins still buried under grass, waiting to be explored (photo 18). Looking south, you see the once incredibly luxurious central avenue (photo 14). This view captures two to three millennia of history and change. At this point, it was time to say goodbye to Turkey’s ancient cities. Along the way, we witnessed the abundance of the Mediterranean coast—olive trees flowing with oil on the hills and honey flowing from various fruits, dried fruits, and honey below. We deeply understood why all these ancient cities flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, over 1,800 years ago during the Roman era. At that time, the Mediterranean, now divided among countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa, was the inner sea of the Roman Empire! How could it not be prosperous? The Romans, at the height of their wealth, expanded wildly and built cities everywhere. In the end, they destroyed themselves. After traveling thousands of miles, we understood the fleeting nature of it all.

Leaving the sunken city, after about a forty-minute drive, we arrived at Myra Ancient City (also known as Myra), which is also located in the Demre region. The ancient city was founded some 2,400 to 2,500 years ago and was one of the six core cities of the Lycian League. Having endured the long eras of Lycia (Ancient Greek), Ancient Rome, Byzantium, and the Seljuk Empire (a Turkic empire with deep ties to the Ottoman Empire, where the Ottoman Empire was born), it gradually declined after a series of major events such as earthquakes, floods, and population shifts. Its ruins have become a name on today's UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List - Myra Ancient City. At the entrance to the scenic area is the ancient city's iconic landmark - human face masks carved into stone (Figure 1). These laughing, terrified, or angry stone mask carvings were originally decorative elements on the cornices of the stage's back wall. After a thousand years, they are scattered along pathways or amidst weeds, becoming prominent "emoji" signboards throughout the scenic area, evoking a sense of destiny. Starting from this stone carving, to the left are the Lycian rock tombs on the opposite cliff, dating back over 2,400 years. To the right is the bustling Ancient Roman Theater, over 1,800 years old (similar scenes can also be seen in Xanthos Ancient City). From the perspective of most people today, it is both bizarre and difficult to comprehend. But this is the Lycian view of life and death - the soul is carried by a divine bird to heaven, looking down on the future lives of descendants. Death is equivalent to rebirth, so why not enjoy it with future generations? Like the Amintas Rock Tombs in Fethiye, the rock tombs here were built for the deceased using a stone-imitating-wood carving technique, creating millennia-old dwellings. Up those two-thousand-year-old stone steps (Figure 6) are vast expanses of rock-cut chamber tombs, immense in scale. After closely examining the lower rock-cut tombs, we followed the stairs on the side of the theater (Figure 9), turned right upwards, and emerged through a cool passage. We then stood on the uppermost platform of the grand theater, which could accommodate tens of thousands of people. The curved theater seats stretched from beneath our feet all the way to the center of the stage. It's hard to truly experience that transition between "yin and yang" scenes without being there in person. Speaking of World Heritage, I feel a bit wronged for Myra Ancient City - a group of carved rock tombs over 2,400 years old, and a grand theater for ten thousand people over 1,800 years old, yet its application for World Heritage status is only on the tentative list! Perhaps it's because there are too many good things? But precisely because of this, Myra Ancient City has not been overdeveloped. It stands as it is, displaying its millennia of glory and past, full of the marks of time, right before you. Even if an ancient civilization, once immensely wealthy and exquisitely luxurious, is now in ruins, its grandeur remains undiminished.

The D400 highway along the Mediterranean coast connects so many beautiful sceneries and ancient sites that it's hard to visit them all. It's not easy to get here, and even though our schedule for the day was already quite tight, we added one more attraction—a private boat trip deep into the Mediterranean to explore the sunken ancient city. A thirty-minute drive from the town of Kaş brought us to Demre Pier, where we boarded the boat to begin our only Mediterranean cruise on this trip (two hours). The boat owner was very thoughtful, creating a narrow plank extending two to three meters out from the bow, allowing everyone to walk out and pose like Rose in the movie Titanic, arms wide open facing the sea breeze, with the deep blue water as the backdrop for memorable photos. Such memories of this visit are truly precious. This sunken ancient city in the Kekova area was one of the coastal cities during the Lycian civilization. Over 1,800 years ago, it sank underwater due to an earthquake causing the earth's crust to subside. The boat moved slowly through the azure waters, occasionally revealing some white ruins standing abruptly in the sea; there is an exquisite, melancholic beauty to it. Near the coastal cliffs, the sea water appears a clear light green, and underwater, only ruins remain. This area is under strict archaeological protection, with snorkeling and swimming prohibited, and boats are not allowed to dock. However, after viewing the sunken city up close by private boat, you can conveniently visit the Simena Castle on the opposite shore. The castle is located in an ancient village called Kaleköy (meaning "Castle Village"). The village sits at the tip of a peninsula jutting deep into the Mediterranean and is inaccessible by public transport, reachable only by boat. Upon arriving at the village entrance, follow the winding flower-filled paths uphill to reach the highest point, Simena Castle. The castle was originally built over 2,400 years ago during the Lycian period (later integrated into ancient Greece). It has witnessed the Roman Empire, Byzantine era, medieval European Knights Hospitaller, and Ottoman Empire periods. Regardless of the changing dynasties, its status as a military fortress has never changed. Standing at the highest point of the castle, you can deeply understand why this was the frontline of Mediterranean naval battles for over two thousand years—it was a natural radar outpost in the era of cold weapons, easily spotting ships entering and leaving within several kilometers. The land and inland sea facing the sunken city are fully visible. The castle also has a magical feature—a mini theater carved into the mountainside with only seven rows of seats, accommodating just 300 people (see photo 16). This is the smallest theater in the Lycian region. Sitting on the theater's stepped seats, you face the walls built by the Knights Hospitaller (over 600 years old, constructed to defend against the Ottoman Empire across the way). Through the gaps in the battlements, the opposite coastline and the deep Mediterranean Sea are clearly visible. Whether for meetings or entertainment, observing enemy movements was never neglected 😂. The theater's designer combined style and spectacle, leaving behind a masterpiece. Standing high above, the sea breeze brushes your face. That wind comes from ancient times, dispersing the glint of swords, iron blood, and smoke of war.
