Poitou-Charentes travel guide and discussion

Very nice and historic baroque style church in the heart of Malmaison. It accommodates the tomb of Josephine. This church is really a beautiful place and so powerful in emotions. I have already visited several churches and I can tell you that these are really a great discovery. Indeed, she exudes such powerful emotions! I was left truly speechless. There are different saints like Saint Lourdes, Bernadette de Soubirous, Joan of Arc that you don't find everywhere. Hortense's crypt is just sublime, it's not always open. If you want to know more, I invite you to visit it and collect your thoughts if you wish. Two really magnificent archangels, look at you from the top of this one and give you a feeling of protection. The church is really well maintained. A place that from the outside does not allow you to imagine the treasures it holds there. I highly recommend this magnificent church to visit from every angle with your well-honed peepers. Great place of worship but could be hard for non French speakers as everything is done in French. But all in all, as far as we have Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, everything is great!

During my stroll through Poitiers, a French city steeped in history, I had the opportunity to visit Église Sainte-Radegonde, one of the city's most historically and religiously significant landmarks. From the outside, the church may appear modest compared to many of France's grand cathedrals. However, as you draw closer, you can feel the charm of its centuries-old Romanesque architecture. The weathered stone walls and soaring towers reflect the medieval glory of Poitiers. This church was built in dedication to Sainte Radegonde, a 6th-century Queen of the Franks who renounced her royal life to devote herself to religion and aiding the poor. After her passing, she was canonized as a saint and became one of Poitiers' most important figures. The interior houses the tomb of Sainte Radegonde, which has made this a destination for pilgrims for centuries. The atmosphere inside is quiet and filled with sanctity; light from the stained glass reflects onto the ancient stone walls, creating the sensation of stepping back in time to the Middle Ages. A highlight is the beautifully preserved frescoes and artistic details, allowing visitors to see the traces of faith and the craftsmanship of various eras that have shaped this site for over 1,000 years. To me, Église Sainte-Radegonde is not just an ancient church, but a place that reflects the story of a woman who transformed her life from a queen to a servant of faith—a vital piece of Poitiers' history that remains alive to this day.

#worthitomot #Lourmarin #Camus #Luberon I based in Lourmarin for three nights in May. Started at the Renaissance château (€8 adult in 2026, Camus exhibition included) at 9 am, then took the Poets’ Trail — a signed 1.2 km dirt path behind the château climbing gently through olive terraces and oak scrub to the village cemetery where Albert Camus is buried under a plain stone among rosemary. The trail is free, unstaffed, and shaded; I counted four other walkers in 40 minutes. Camus's grave is unmarked except a small plaque — no glass case, no queue. Back in the village I sat at the olive press café terrace (old moulin à huile converted, espresso €2.50, olive tasting €4 for three oils) and watched the Friday market spill into the square (8 am–1 pm, but May is gentle). Mistake: I first visited in August — château queue 25 min, cemetery path dusty with 30 people photographing a grave like a monument. May or October is the truth. Another mistake: assuming the Poets’ Trail is stroller-friendly; it's rocky, wear trail shoes not espadrilles. Worth it? The €8 château is a soft yes — the Camus rooms are small but the garden loggia over the village is worth the ticket alone. The cemetery walk is non-negotiable free. Skip the château if you only want the literary mood; do both if you like 1950s French-Algerian context. Question: is a €8 château ticket worth it when the poet's grave and the olive terrace are free — does the building add or distract?

I had seen photos of its famous karst landscapes before my trip, but nothing prepared me for how massive and dramatic everything would feel in person. Standing beneath the towering cliffs and natural stone bridges, I felt incredibly small. The scenery looked like something straight out of a fantasy movie, with deep gorges, hidden caves, and lush greenery stretching in every direction. What surprised me the most was the contrast between the rugged landscape and the peaceful atmosphere. Despite being a popular destination, there were moments when all I could hear was the sound of flowing water and the wind echoing through the valley. Walking through the Three Natural Bridges and exploring the surrounding trails felt like stepping into another world. Wulong wasn't just beautiful—it was unforgettable. The sheer scale of nature, combined with the sense of tranquility, made it one of the most impressive places I've ever visited. If you're looking for a destination that will truly exceed your expectations, Wulong should definitely be on your list.#underratedspots

While exploring Poitiers, an ancient city steeped in over 2,000 years of history, one landmark you simply cannot miss is the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Poitiers. This majestic cathedral stands tall in the heart of the city and is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Construction began in the 12th century under the patronage of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, one of the most powerful women in medieval Europe. The project took several centuries to complete, resulting in a cathedral that perfectly reflects the art, faith, and political influence of that era. Stepping inside, the first thing that stops you in your tracks is the sheer height and grandeur of the space. Massive stone pillars soar toward the Gothic vaulted ceilings, creating an atmosphere of awe-inspiring elegance. Light from ancient stained glass, dating back hundreds of years, filters through to fill the sanctuary with vibrant colors and a sacred ambiance. Among the cathedral's most precious treasures is the large stained-glass window at the front. Created in the 12th century, it is one of the oldest surviving examples of Gothic stained glass in France. The building also houses a magnificent 18th-century organ, recognized as one of the country's most significant historical instruments. What resonated with me most wasn't just the architectural beauty, but the profound sense of peace I felt while sitting inside, watching the light dance through the glass and sensing the centuries of stories preserved in every corner of the building. For anyone visiting Poitiers, I highly recommend taking the time to wander through this cathedral slowly. It is more than just a religious site; it is a living chapter of history and a French cultural gem that is truly worth experiencing at least once. 📍 Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Poitiers, Poitiers, France 🇫🇷

Every July, the lavender season in Provence is a feast for the eyes and nose, painting this southern French land in vibrant purple hues, with the air filled with intoxicating fragrance. During this dreamlike season, Gordes in the Luberon region is undoubtedly the ideal base to experience this event and deeply explore the unique charm of Provence. This ancient hilltop village, with its distinctive stone architecture and enchanting panoramic views, perfectly embodies the allure of Provence. Here is my guide for accommodation and lavender viewing in Provence: 1. Accommodation: In Gordes, I chose the castle hotel located on the rocky hillside, Airelles Gordes, La Bastide, which offers magnificent panoramic views of the Luberon Valley. From multiple terraces and the sky garden of the hotel, you can fully enjoy this picturesque scenery. (Photos 5-10) The hotel was once a noble residence, carefully restored to preserve the original stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and antique furniture, showcasing the elegant style of a French countryside palace. The interior is decorated with over 4,000 artworks, including portraits, landscapes, and botanical patterns, creating a rich historical atmosphere. Viewing spot: Sénanque Abbey, undoubtedly one of the most iconic and frequently photographed lavender fields in Provence. The ancient stone abbey contrasts beautifully with the vibrant purple lavender fields, forming a classic postcard scene. It is worth mentioning that Sénanque Abbey remains an active monastery, with monks still cultivating lavender. (Photos 1 and 12) P Sault Village Starting from Gordes, a 40-minute drive takes you to the lavender fields of Sault. Due to its higher altitude, this area is better visited in the later bloom period (mid to late July). The landscape here is more pristine and open, with fewer tourists. (Photo 11) P Valensole If you arrive in late June to early July, Valensole lavender fields are undoubtedly the best viewing spot. Along roads D6 and D8, vast lavender fields are interspersed with golden wheat fields, solitary trees, and charming stone houses. This is the ideal place for classic lavender photos and Blue Hour shots at sunset. (Photos 2-4) Must-visit lavender viewing spots: ° Sénanque Abbey Less than a 10-minute drive from the hotel is the famous lavender

This summer, I chased the romantic lavender journey in the South of France, visiting Valensole - the ceramic town - Lac de Sainte-Croix - Sénanque Abbey - Gordes stone village - Fontaine-de-Vaucluse - Arles - Aix-en-Provence - Nice. If you ask me which place I liked the most, it’s not the highly anticipated lavender fields, but this emerald-like lake canyon—Lac de Sainte-Croix! The color of this lake is not just green; under the sunlight, it shines a crystal-clear blue-green. You can also row boats on the lake, pass through the canyon, and you can even jump off the boat to swim at will. There are many adults and children diving off the cliffs on both sides of the canyon. I really envy their courage and relaxed vibe! If you’re coming to the South of France, please don’t miss this beautiful place! 【Attraction】Lac de Sainte-Croix 【Parking🅿️】 📍Navigate to Parking Pont du Galetas, free parking. The parking lot is right downhill at the end of the must-visit bridge. 【Activities】 1️⃣🚣Boat rental (a must-do) ▪️Boat types: paddleboards, kayaks, pedal boats, etc. ▪️Price: We rented a covered pedal boat, 50€/2 hours ▪️Rental companies: There are currently three boat rental companies with similar boat types and prices. You can ask about the wait time. When we went, the first two companies had a 1-hour wait, but the one furthest inside had no queue and we got on the boat immediately. ▪️Rowing time: At least 2 hours, just enough to leisurely row to the depths of the canyon and back 🔙. ▪️Closing time: Our rental company closes at 6:30 PM, so it’s best to get on the boat before 4:30 PM, or you won’t have much time to row! 2️⃣Playing in the water by the lake + picnic Besides boating, this lakeside is really perfect for picnics, which is also the most popular activity among locals. Many families come to the lake to play. We had limited time and only played a little on the shore, but if you have enough time, you can really relax and enjoy the whole day here. 【Tips】 ✅Remember sun protection ✅Bring a swimsuit; you can jump into the lake to swim anytime while boating ✅Restrooms🚾: Walk to the far end from the parking lot, there is a paid restroom, and you can also buy drinks and snacks! 【One-day itinerary】 Morning: Ceramic town ➟ (20 min drive) Afternoon: Lac de Sainte-Croix.

The beauty of Poitou-Charentes lies in the mellow aroma of Cognac, the ancient charm of its châteaux, the healing power of its islands, and the gentle embrace of its old towns. Don't rush your itinerary; slow down and savor it – that's the true essence of French travel. Save this post and embark on your French hidden gem journey now! ✨ Black Diamond Post

Compared to the overcrowded Paris and Nice, I much prefer the quiet and charming region of Poitou-Charentes in southwestern France. Less crowded, more beautiful, and with a super relaxed pace. Must-Visit Spots Île de Rêve, also known as the "Silver Island," is entirely composed of white houses and salt pans. Rent a bicycle and cycle around the island, enjoying the sea breeze and perhaps even encountering a postman on a bicycle – romantic and therapeutic. Saint-Savin Abbey Church, a World Heritage Site, features Romanesque churches with walls covered in Old Testament frescoes; looking up is breathtaking, brimming with artistic flair. La Rochelle, a stunning seaside town with medieval fortifications standing in the harbor. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the sea and old town; every shot is a masterpiece. Poitiers, an ancient Roman city, also houses a futuristic theme park, a blend of history and modernity, perfect for families. Authentic Experience Walk along the Brandy Route, visiting wineries, witnessing the aging process in oak barrels, and inhaling the incredibly soothing aromas. Day 3 Île de Ré: Cycle along the coastline, visit white houses and salt pans. Day 4-5 Poitiers + Saint-Savín + Brandy Wineries: Immerse yourself in history and the aroma of wine. Poitou-Charentes|Hidden Gentle Secret on France’s West Coast, Where Time Softens 🍷 Avoiding the crowds of Paris and Provence, I found the most relaxed French lifestyle on France’s west coast. This is Poitou-Charentes, with canals, salt islands, lighthouses, medieval old towns, endless Cognac to drink, and oysters you can’t get enough of. Quiet, clean, and gentle to the core, every step feels like walking inside a painting. 🌊 La Rochelle: The Romance of the Harbor and Lighthouse As the regional capital, La Rochelle takes French harbor aesthetics to the extreme. The old port is filled with colorful sailboats, stone quays are packed with sunbathers, and three medieval towers guard the harbor. Sunlight sparkles on the water like scattered diamonds. In the evening, stroll along the lighthouse path, where the sea breeze carries a salty scent, the sunset dyes the sky orange-pink, harbor lights gradually turn on, creating a romance that leaves you speechless. A 20-minute drive from here brings you to Île de Ré—white houses, blue windows, salt fields, and a long coastline. Known as the “White Island of France,” cycling through salt marshes and flower fields, the breeze tastes sweet. 🦪 Île d’Oléron: The Fresh Sweetness of Oysters and Sea Salt Marennes-Oléron is a top oyster-producing region in France. The clear seawater and strong tides produce plump, fresh Claire oysters with a crisp sea flavor and a hint of creaminess. Find a seaside bistro, enjoy freshly shucked oysters with a glass of local white wine, squeeze a few drops of lime, and one bite delivers an icy, fresh sweetness that hits your head—this is the ocean’s finest delicacy. The island also has traditional salt marshes, with white salt piles like small snowy mountains. Salt farmers still use ancient methods to harvest salt, where time seems to stand still. 🚣 Poitou Marshes: The Tranquility of the Green Venice Known as the “Green Venice of France,” the Poitou Marshes are a secret realm wrapped in canals and greenery. Ride a flat-bottom boat through water alleys shaded by trees, with water birds flying leisurely overhead. The boatman tells stories in dialect about medieval monks who dug the canals. No noise, only the sound of water and birdsong. Look up to see light filtering through leaves, look down to see crystal-clear canals, as if stepping into a paradise. Here you can also enjoy specialty marsh stews and crayfish, slow-cooked with local ingredients, bursting with flavor. 🏰 Poitiers: Echoes of Medieval Times Poitiers’ old town preserves a complete medieval atmosphere, with stone streets, Gothic churches, and vintage shops, each corner steeped in history. The future film city is full of technology, with light and special effects creating a fantasy world. Perfect for family trips or those seeking novel experiences. Wandering the old town alleys, you might stumble upon a café. Order a coffee with a French floating island dessert—the meringue is light as clouds, the caramel sauce sweet and silky, a bite to fall for. 🥃 The Land of Cognac: Tipsy French Romance This is the home of Cognac, with vast vineyards rolling across the landscape and ancient cellars holding the aroma of time. Visit family-owned distilleries, watch the distillation process, and taste Cognacs of different vintages. The amber liquid sways in the glass, rich and lingering in aroma. In this gentle intoxication, you understand the elegance of French life. 🍴 Must-Try Food List (Avoid Pitfalls) ▪️ Marennes-Oléron Oysters: Fresh to the bone ▪️ Bouchot Mussels: Classic French seafood with fries ▪️ Saint-Loup Goat Cheese: Soft and rich ▪️ French Floating Island: A must-have dessert ▪️ Foie Gras and Walnut Cake: Full of rustic flavor ▪️ Cognac and Charente White Wine: Perfect wine pairings ✨ Travel Tips ▪️ Self-driving is most convenient; attractions are scattered, and the road scenery is stunning ▪️ Best from May to September, with plenty of sunshine, ideal for islands and outdoor activities ▪️ Use ocean-friendly sunscreen to protect coastal ecology ▪️ Weekend markets in the old town are great for souvenirs and snacks ▪️ Book winery tours in advance for a better experience In Poitou-Charentes, no need to rush or squeeze into crowded spots. Walk slowly, eat slowly, drink slowly, and slowly feel the wind, sunshine, and sea. There’s no trendy hustle here, only the truest French gentleness, perfect for relaxing, healing, and finding life’s rhythm. If you’re tired of crowds, come here. Give your time to canals and harbors, your taste buds to oysters and Cognac, and on France’s west coast, discover the ideal slow life 🌿

South France Road Trip: Encountering the Purple Dream of Provence On a bright and sunny day, I rented a car and drove through southern France, diving headfirst into the unique purple romance of Provence. Along the way, endless lavender fields stretched out before me like a purple ocean. The breeze gently rolled the waves of flowers, and the air was filled with an intoxicating fragrance. I stopped the car, walked into this dreamy sea of flowers, got close to the purple fairies, and felt the tenderness and healing power of nature. The beauty of self-driving is the freedom and spontaneity. I stopped at some unknown small villages at will. The rustic stone houses and winding alleys exuded strong French charm everywhere. The villagers were warm and friendly, their faces glowing with warm smiles, making me feel as if I were in a paradise. At dusk, I drove to the mountaintop to overlook the lavender fields dyed golden by the sunset, a beauty like a dream. At that moment, time seemed to stand still, and all worries were thrown far away. Provence, this poetic land, with its purple romance, wove an unforgettable dream for me, making me intoxicated and unwilling to wake up.

At 40, Encountering the Dream of "Mountain Dwelling Years" in France At 40, I finally set foot on this enchanting land and arrived in the French countryside depicted in "Mountain Dwelling Years." Time here seems to have been slowed down; ancient stone houses are scattered orderly on the hillside, their tiled roofs shimmering warmly under the sunlight. I strolled along the winding paths, wildflowers blooming freely by the roadside, and the air filled with the fragrance of earth and grass. Entering a local tavern, the enthusiastic owner communicated with me in not-so-fluent English and handed me a glass of rich wine. Sitting by the window, watching the scenery outside and listening to the laughter and chatter of people, at that moment, I felt an unprecedented peace and contentment. Traveling alone, free from others' interference, I could fully immerse myself in this beautiful scenery and have a dialogue with my inner self. The simplicity and tranquility of the French countryside are like a melodious pastoral poem, healing my weary heart from the city. At 40, to encounter the dream of "Mountain Dwelling Years" here is truly wonderful.

#timetotravel This is the Univerity of Santo Tomas located in Manila Philippines. It was first estbalished in 1611 during the Spanish colonization in the Philippines. This is a Catholic school but anyone could enroll no matter what the student's denomination as long as he/she passes the entrance exam of this university. What is more interesting in this university is that it produced 4 presidents of the Philippines. Isn't that amazing? Anyway, it is important to note that you can't enter the school unless you have a relative who is currently styding there.. Just double check though, this policy might have changed already.
