Natural landscape is my deepest longing when it comes to travel. And the most beautiful parts tend to happen only when we take time to go beyond the drop-off point or observatory into a hiking journey of an hour or two (or more). Some of my friends usually found it troublesome, so I had to do it alone when exploring the nature but I still enjoyed every inch of the journey. Coming from a tropical country, I love autumn the most of all seasons, which gives vibrant colors that I don’t grow up seeing. Crow Valley Recreation Area has a $6/night primitive campground and a 0.4mi boardwalk loop from the campground lot — I arrived at 6:40 p.m. in early October (sunset 6:50), walked the boardwalk north to the open shortgrass plain. The grass — buffalo grass, blue grama, western wheatgrass — went from dun to a thin line of gold under a hard-edged Colorado sky, the Pawnee Buttes 9mi north caught a last rose band, and a pronghorn buck trotted the horizon at 6:35. A $1.75 gas-station coffee from Grover. Mistake: coming in July midday — 38°C, no shade, flat white. Another: skipping the boardwalk for the highway pullout — the boardwalk puts you 3ft above the grass, the buttes line up. Rule: no off-boardwalk walking in nesting season (plover, sage grouse, posted Mar–Jul); no target shooting near the rec area; pack out trash, no bins. Opinion: Crow Valley's boardwalk dusk is the cheapest sunset in the Rockies — free land, $0 entry, and the buttes do the same work as a $300 Telluride gondola ride. What people get wrong: they assume Crater Lake is a blue jewel like the Oregon one. It is not. It is a shallow, murky alpine tarn, and the reward is the surrounding walls, not the water color. Another error is skipping the shuttle and trying to park at the Maroon Bells lot, which holds maybe a few dozen cars and is gated until 8 a.m. Layer smart. Aspen mornings were 28°F, afternoons hit 60°F. I wore merino base, fleece, and a packable puffy, then stripped down to a tee by noon. It’s hard to sum up my trip down the Colorado River with Western River Expeditions in just one word. The guides—Wylie, Anna, Lindsey, and TJ—were fantastic at their jobs! They shared fascinating facts about the Grand Canyon, tales of the history and lore of river guides, along with geological insights about the stunning canyon. They also took great care to ensure everyone in our group stayed healthy and hydrated. On a few evenings after dinner, we even enjoyed some music. The food was delicious, and you could tell the crew truly enjoyed preparing it. Such an amazing team! The river journey itself was beyond words. Every bend revealed breathtaking views. The rapids were exhilarating, and the side excursions added extra excitement. Some of the most gorgeous stars I’ve ever seen lit up the night sky. Prepare to get a little dirty—it’s completely worth it! Embark on this trip, and you won’t regret it!

Amnaya is absolutely amazing. The staff is incredibly welcoming and professional, making my stay truly wonderful. Breakfast here is among the best I’ve ever had. Citta at the restaurant was so friendly and available, just like the rest of the staff, though I couldn’t catch everyone’s name. Every meal I had at the restaurant and pool was absolutely delicious. Gungde assisted with my luggage during check-in and check-out, while Nidia and Aldo at the front desk were exceptionally quick to help with my checkout. I requested a robe for my room, and impressively, it made it to my room before I even arrived, courtesy of the front desk team. As someone who works at a hotel in Colorado, I have great admiration for the care and dedication the Amnaya staff demonstrated—they’ve truly set a high bar. I thoroughly enjoyed the hotel’s infusion of Balinese culture, including the daily activities and the delightful high tea every afternoon. It was a genuine pleasure to stay here. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
