Stayed at an island hotel in Dalian and just relaxed.
Dalian Island Guide|Off-the-Beaten-Path Island Relaxation Guide|Fewer People, Beautiful Scenery, and Cool Breezes
If you're like me and want to avoid crowds at the beach, just find a quiet place to lie down for a few days, watch the sea, daydream, and eat seafood, then Dalian’s islands are definitely perfect for you!
There are many small islands around Dalian, with few people, beautiful scenery, and clear seawater. The best part is that it’s especially cool in summer; the sea breeze blows away all your worries.
🏝️ How to choose an island?
There are quite a few islands around Dalian, each with its own characteristics. Here’s a simple comparison for you:
Guanglu Island: The largest island with the most complete facilities, featuring beaches and mountains. Suitable for first-time island visitors or those traveling with elderly and children.
Zhangzi Island: The clearest seawater! Visibility can reach over ten meters, great for diving and snorkeling, perfect for water lovers.
Haiyang Island: The farthest island with the fewest people, the most pristine, ideal for those wanting to completely escape the crowds.
Haxian Island: Smaller, with nice beaches and strong fishing village vibes, great for experiencing island life.
This time I went to Guanglu Island because it was my first visit and I wanted better facilities, and the experience was fantastic!
🚤 How to get there?
To get to the islands from downtown Dalian, you usually take a boat from Pikou Port. The boat ride takes about 1-2 hours, varying by island.
Tips from personal experience:
· You can buy boat tickets online in advance. During peak season, buy early or you might not get tickets.
· Choose the upper deck for better views, but it can be sunny, so prepare sunscreen.
· If you get seasick easily, take seasickness medicine beforehand; the sea can be quite rough sometimes.
· Boat schedules depend on tides and may vary daily, so check in advance.
🌴 Island Relaxation Guide
Morning: Wake up naturally + walk by the sea
Don’t get up early on the island. Wake up naturally, then take a walk by the sea. The morning sea is very quiet with few people. Walking in the sea breeze is especially comfortable.
Noon: Seafood feast + nap
The seafood on the island is incredibly fresh! All caught the same day—scallops, oysters, clams, sea snails—everything tastes great. After eating, take a nap while listening to the sound of the waves; it’s so healing.
Afternoon: Relax on the beach + play in the water
The afternoon sun can be strong, so find a shady spot by the sea to lie down, read, daydream, or scroll on your phone. When tired, dip in the sea for a while. Or go tide pooling to find little crabs and shells—very fun.
Evening: Watch the sunset + stroll by the sea
The island sunsets are stunning! The sun slowly sets over the sea, turning the sky and water orange-red. The breathtaking view can’t be captured by photos. After the sunset, take a walk along the shore in the sea breeze—it’s very pleasant.
Night: BBQ + stargazing
You must have a seafood BBQ at night! Grilled squid, oysters, scallops... eating with the sea breeze is amazing. After dinner, go stargazing by the sea. The stars on the island are many and bright, and you can even see the Milky Way, which you can’t see in the city.
📍 Must-experience on Guanglu Island
1. Moon Bay Beach
The best beach on Guanglu Island, with fine sand, clear water, and few people. You can swim, play in the sand, and sunbathe all day without getting bored.
2. Laotieshan
A mountain on the island, not very high. Climbing up offers views of the entire island and the sea, with excellent sightlines. It’s even more beautiful at sunset.
3. Fairy Lake
Quite magical—one side is a lake, the other the sea, separated by a narrow causeway. The lake water is very clear, and the surrounding scenery is lovely for a stroll.
4. Tide Pooling
Go tide pooling at low tide to find lots of treasures—small crabs, sea snails, clams, oysters... If you’re lucky, you might find sea cucumbers. It’s very rewarding, and you can have the catch cooked by the local vendors to eat right away.
🍤 What to eat on the island?
You must eat seafood on the island! And it has to be cooked by the fishermen’s families for the authentic fresh taste.
Recommended dishes:
· Steamed scallops: big, plump, original flavor, sweet
· Spicy stir-fried clams: perfect with drinks, addictive
· Sea urchin steamed egg: incredibly fresh, loved by both elders and kids
· Seafood platter: everything on one big plate, very impressive
· Mackerel dumplings: a Dalian specialty, a must-try
Tip: You can buy freshly caught seafood from fishermen at the dock in the morning and have it cooked by local families—cheap and fresh.
⚠️ Island Tips
⚠️ Island accommodations are definitely not as good as in the city, so don’t expect too much; it’s about the experience.
⚠️ Seafood is delicious but don’t eat too much at once to avoid stomach issues; bring some digestive medicine.
⚠️ UV rays are very strong by the sea; bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to avoid sunburn.
⚠️ Supplies on the island are relatively scarce and prices are higher than in the city, so be prepared.
⚠️ Boat schedules are heavily affected by weather; if there’s strong wind, boats may be canceled. It’s safer to allow an extra day.
💡 Relaxed Vacation Tips
Honestly, I used to rush to see as many sights as possible when traveling, thinking it was a waste not to. But this time, I relaxed on the island for three days without visiting any attractions, just staying by the sea, and felt especially relaxed and comfortable.
Sometimes travel doesn’t have to be exhausting, with check-ins at many spots or taking lots of photos. Just find a comfortable place, stay quietly for a few days, watch the sea, daydream, eat delicious food, and fully relax—that’s also a great way to travel.
If you’re tired too, find an island to lie down for a few days. Don’t think about anything, just listen to the waves, feel the sea breeze, and let time slow down—it’s truly healing.
