Evora travel guide and discussion

Evora is an amazing place to visit! It is just ninety minutes driving east from Lisbon, so it is perfect for a two day getaway. The old town or center of Evora was declared an UNESCO Heritage site in 1986 and it is such a beautiful place. There are many things to see and experience in this historic Portuguese town but here follows the top five places to see. 1. Chapel of bones. The inside of this church had the bones of five thousand different humans. It is strange but also conveys the sense of humans being impermanence and ultimate demise. Good for a dose of reality! 2. Templo de Diana or Roman Temple. Great to see how far the ancient Empire spread. 3. Agua da Prata or The Silver Water Aquaduct. It surrounds the city and stands high abovebthe ground in some places. 4. Palacio Dom Manuel. A well manicured garden surrounds the palace and it is well taken care of and a nice place to sit outside and relax. 5. Cathedral of Evora. This is probably the most impressive site in the town. The entrance fee is five euros and the whole site is more than just the church. It takes about two hours to see everything. The view from the roof is amazing and should not be missed! After a full day of sight seeing I recommend stopping at the Praça do Giraldo (the huge main plaza) in the late afternoon. The area is full of bars, cafes and pastelerias to satisfy everyone. As for a recommended hotel, The Hilton Garden Inn Evora is clean, modern, has great and very friendly staff. #portugaltravel #travel2026 #evora #unescoworldheritage #portugal #tripmoments #weekendgetaways #couplestrip #cathedral #churches

The thousand year old Marvāo Castle is perched high on the top of a small mountain in the east of Portugal. It is just over a hundred kilometers north from Evora town and makes for a great day trip. Driving the roads through the small villages in the morning is pleasant and peaceful but the castle is visible from far away up high on the top of the hill. There is huge area parking before entering the mainly pedestrian town of Marvāo.This old stone building built village has ancient cobbled streets and is filled with small shops, cafes and a fantastic tourist bureau with helpful people. It is a pleasant walk through the town before arriving at the castle proper. The castles secondary walls and lookouts cascade down along the hillside and are tightly integrated and connected to form an impenetrable barrier! Once you arrive at the top of the hill there is a small ticket concession and the entrance fee is two euros per person. Inside the castle are various courtyards, lookouts, old cannons, small replica living quarters, large towers, many gates, various fortified rooms and a small chapel. The views out over the lands below are breathtaking and to the east, less than ten kilometers away is Spain! There is also a series of underground cisterns to sustain the people in the event of a long siege. This castle has a medieval vibe and its stone work is gorgeous and marvelous. The actual situation on top of a mountain is impressive and yet mind boggling at the amount of work needed to construct it. Also the details that the architects were able to integrate in the construction is amazing! When we visited midweek there were only about twenty other people around, which was a nice change for a few hours from Evora but we happily drove back to the Hilton Garden Inn Evora. Our conversation was dominated by fantasies of what went on during the castle's busy medieval times. I highly recommend visiting the Marvāo Castle while it is a hidden gem! #portugaltravel #travel2026 #citydaytours #europe #europetrip #marvao #evora

Many know about Portugal, but few have heard of "Evora"—this small Portuguese town, wholly included in the "World Heritage" list, is a delightful surprise highly recommended by Trip.com specialists on this customized Spain-Portugal tour. It is like an ancient coin carefully polished by time, engraved with two thousand years of history, yet glowing warmly under the sunset. Evora lies quietly on the gentle slopes of the Alentejo plain, with 49,000 residents guarding 14th-century city walls that perfectly preserve the texture of the Middle Ages. Guide Liu, seeing my love for photography, gave up the highway and leisurely drove along the country road. The red-tiled white houses and castle of "New Montemor" we passed made a charming scene, inviting lingering❸❻⓫⓬⓭⓮⓯⓰⓱⓲⓳⓴; while the "Almendres Cromlech"❿, over seven thousand years old, paired with the women worshipping under olive trees, sketches a silhouette older than England’s Stonehenge. Seeing another patch of red clay tile roofs spreading along the slope, the warm plain breeze rushing through the car window, the driver stopped the car at the foot of the city wall: "You have to wait for the sun to tilt to enter Evora’s gates." At that moment, the sunset was like molten copper, dyeing the sky a rich blue, the dry grass in the wall’s brick gaps gilded with golden light, and the air carried the warm scent of sun-baked stones. Stepping on the edge of light and shadow into the city, I suddenly entered Giraldo Square❶❷❹—the 13th-century stone pavement was heated by the sun, but the cathedral arcade’s shadow was cool as well water, and the old men’s figures on the benches stretched long. Looking up, the yellow-and-white old buildings were covered with bougainvillea, the sunset flowing along the carved eaves, staining the walls with half-light, half-dark hues, like an ancient painting not yet dry. Circling half the square, the fourteen granite columns of the Roman Temple of Diana suddenly came into view❷. These giant stones from the 1st century AD have endured over two thousand years, their column patterns carved as if by axe and chisel, while moss in the stone cracks glowed warmly. Sunset light leaked through the columns, weaving a flickering grid on the ground; the cold, hard stone became warm and gentle at this moment, and the wind passing over the column tops sounded like the low moan of ancient Romans passed down through millennia. Walking deeper into the old town, the road narrowed into alleys. Pale lime walls and layers of red roofs, a beam of light slanted through the alley entrance, and the poet on the oldest bookstore’s door wall appeared fleeting in the light and shadow⓮. Turning past an archway, the church spire appeared behind ivy-covered walls, the wind moved the bronze bell, its sound rolling with light and shadow, startling the pigeons on the ancient water trough wall⓬. Their shadows fluttered past shoulders, landed on windowsills, breaking the shimmering sunset in the glass. Manueline stone columns cast long, slender shadows, weaving rings around the pool. The shadows overlapped on 15th-century patterned tiles, where vines and carvings have intertwined for nearly five hundred years. Touching the column felt as cold as ice, but the carved folds held lingering sunset light, warm enough to burn. By the city center park, the entire ancient town was bathed in an orange glow, and I saw the silhouette of a peacock framed by a serrated archway⓴. Suddenly, it felt like only at this moment do the stones soften, time tastes sweet, and Evora is a time-forged ring, each groove engraved with the weight of years: two-thousand-year-old columns, five-hundred-year-old cloisters, three-hundred-year-old tiles, all untouched by time’s erosion, instead softened warmly by the sunset. This ancient town, home to nine churches, is most famous for the "Chapel of Bones" decorated with the bones of 5,000 monks⓳(above), with a chilling inscription at the door: "Our bones lie here, waiting for your bones to come." Eastern and Western views on death differ greatly; this was not included in the itinerary, and I kept my distance from that heaviness. The world calls Evora a "city in a museum." I feel it is more an epic carved by sunset light and shadow, where those stones, old walls, and spires are words in a poem. It is no longer a cold exhibit in a museum but an ancient coin warmed by sunset, its imprint clear and within reach.

✨Unveiling Faro! A hidden gem 💎 in southeast Portugal, a charming capital you absolutely can't miss! Hey everyone! Today, we're taking you to explore the shining pearl of southeast Portugal—Faro🏖️! Located at the southernmost tip of mainland Portugal, this city is not only the capital of the Algarve region but also its largest city! Speaking of Faro, how can we not mention its breathtakingly beautiful beaches?🌊 These beaches are considered the most beautiful in the Algarve and are among the top natural beaches in Europe! Stretching for dozens of kilometers with wide-open views, they are the perfect place to enjoy the sun and sand! The crystal-clear water allows you to see colorful fish swimming leisurely, making you want to jump right in, right?🐠 But wait, there's more to Faro! The Bone Chapel, doesn't it sound creepy?😱 But the Chapel of Bones in the Carmo Church has a heavy history behind it. The Black Death in the 14th century and the wars in the 15th century left a large number of bones here. And these bones were meticulously piled up to form the walls and pillars of the chapel! Isn't it both thrilling and mysterious? Of course, Faro's old town is also a must-see!🌟 Surrounded by ancient city walls, the old town seems to take you back in time. The narrow cobblestone streets, colorful old buildings, and exquisite Portuguese tile decorations all exude a traditional atmosphere. Don't forget, Faro also has amazing traditional handicrafts! Exquisite ceramics, embroidery, and woven goods, each piece showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the local people and carries their culture and emotions.🎨 Come to Faro and experience the unique charm of this captivating city!🏙️

#Church ⛪️The bone church is the highlight of this trip to Evora. It is located in the off-white St. Francis Catholic Church. The church was built in the 17th century. Later, a half-blind monk turned 5,000 corpses buried in the church cemetery due to the Black Death or war into decorative artworks, which became the bone church we see today. The scale of this bone church is obviously smaller than the one I saw in the Czech Republic before. It is more simple and you will be scared if you approach it suddenly. However, foreigners do not think these bones are scary, but rather have a sense of nostalgia. The entrance to the Church of Bones has a big sign "Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos", which means our bones are waiting for your bones here, so cool👍 Evora is a very small ancient city, and a large section of the ancient city wall is still preserved. If you have enough time, it is recommended to walk slowly to the church and visit the street shops. There are also ancient Roman temples and sewers here, which can be arranged together for a day trip! 🎯 Capela dos Ossos Chapel of Bones Take the Rede Expressos bus from Sete Rios Station to Évora, the journey takes 1.5 hours, and there is a bus every hour, which is very convenient #Portugal Travel #World Heritage #100 Ways to Travel #evora #Chapel of Bones #Day Tour Guide

The Roman Temple of Évora, also known as the Temple of Diana, is one of the most iconic and well-preserved monuments in Évora, Portugal. This temple is a testament to the Roman presence in the city, dating back to the 1st century AD, during the reign of Emperor Augustus. It is located in the historic center of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by other significant monuments of Évora. Its Corinthian granite columns and marble base are still in good condition, making it one of the most remarkable examples of Roman architecture in Portugal. The Évora Aqueduct (Aqueduto da Água de Prata) is an impressive historical structure located in the city of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Portugal. It was built in the 16th century to supply fresh water to the city, which often faced droughts. The aqueduct extends for about 18 kilometers from its source to Évora. What makes the Évora Aqueduct particularly unique is that it integrates into the city’s architecture. Within the city walls, houses, shops, and other buildings are constructed beneath and alongside the aqueduct's arches, blending the functional structure with urban life. #europeanarchitecture #100WaysOfTravel #portugal #oldtown #evora #unesco #worldheritage #medieval #roman #aqueduct

This is an amazing hotel, so beautiful and luxurious, located in such a small town! We could easily walk from the hotel to all the historical sites and the central square. It was a great trip! We really enjoyed it. Our room was spacious with a quiet balcony and a very comfortable bed and pillows. The bathroom was fully decorated in marble, featuring a walk-in shower and very nice toiletries. Everything was very gorgeous and comfortable. The breakfast was truly delicious, offering a variety of hot and cold foods, and the fruit was fresh. They have a heated swimming pool and an outdoor area with a regular pool. Honestly, I didn't want to leave. If there were more things to do in Évora, I would stay longer just for this hotel. I highly recommend Évora Olive to everyone. Highly recommend Évora Olive.

#September2024 Evora, Portugal was established during the Roman Empire rule around the 3rd century. It was once the Roman Empire's resident base for a long time, so many relics of that time are left behind. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was successively occupied by the Visigoths and the Moors. Therefore, the buildings are mostly a mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Arabic styles. As an important religious and cultural city, Évora was also listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 1986. Famous attractions include the Capela dos Ossos Chapel, located in the square in front of St. Francis Catholic Church? Next to it is the Church of Our Lady of Grace, Igreja da Graça. It is really comfortable to stroll on the cobblestone streets in the city of Évora. In the center of Placa do Giraldo Square, the surrounding shopping streets are crowded and quite lively. The Roman Temple Templo romano de Évora is an ancient Roman site listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. It was built around the 1st century AD and is dedicated to Diana, the ancient Roman goddess of the moon and hunting. It is also the best-preserved Roman temple on the Iberian Peninsula. If you have more time, you can go to the Almendres Cromlech Stonehenge, which is located 15 kilometers west of Evora. It is similar to Stonehenge in the UK. It is the largest existing circular stone circle on the Iberian Peninsula and is very suitable for taking pictures.

Evora is one of my favorite old towns in Portugal. This white city still breathes the warm atmosphere of the mixed cultures it encountered in its vibrant history. You can see typical narrow Moorish streets, white meticulously designed buildings combined with its agricultural and spiritual heritage. It's small and flat, perfect for walking, but large and interesting enough to make visitors feel comfortable as they slowly stroll along the cobblestone streets and beautiful squares. Sit in one of the cafes, enjoy a drink, coffee, and take in the beautiful views of Evora! Check out its churches, chapels, temples, palaces, museums, fountains, noble residences... No wonder it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. It's a great place for a leisurely walk, with enough good tourist infrastructure to make it a wonderful place for visitors to eat, drink, and have fun.

Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Portugal, is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, Roman ruins, and rich history. It is about 1.5 hours by car or train from Lisbon so it makes a perfect day trip destination from Lisbon. The historic centre of Evora is small enough to be explored on foot. The major attractions include: 🌟 Roman Temple (Templo Romano de Évora) This is one of the best-preserved Roman structures on the Iberian Peninsula, dating back to the 1st century. 🌟 Cathedral of Évora (Sé de Évora) A massive Gothic structure with stunning views from the roof. 🌟 Praça do Giraldo The main square of Évora, surrounded by historical buildings and filled with local cafes. 🌟 Évora Aqueduct (Aqueduto da Água de Prata) A marvel of Renaissance engineering built to supply water to the city in the 16th century #citydaytours #100WaysOfTravel #portugal #oldtown #evora #unesco #worldheritage #medieval #roman #aqueduct

#2024wish We were really lucky that the weather permitted us to skydive during our visit to Portugal. Initially we booked skydiving in Faro, the southern part of Portugal with nice beaches. However the weather was not good there. So we chose to skydive in Evora instead. Evora is about 1.5 h from Lisbon by train. Skydiving has been in my dad's bucket list for a long time. We tried to do it in New Zealand in 2019 but the weather was not good when we were there. Then we stopped traveling for almost 3 years due to the pandemic. Finally my dad got to tick skydiving off his bucket list at an age of 71! I'm so proud of him. Tandem skydiving is really easy. Just follow the instructions given and trust your instructor. The whole process, excluding briefing, can be completed in 30 minutes. 15-20 minutes airplane ride, jump off the plane and free fall for about 1 min, open the parachute and glide for about 5 min and you will have an experience of a lifetime. We paid 199 euros for 4200 m skydive. You can of course pay extra to add on photos and videos. #skydive #skydiving #portugal #lisbon #evora #bucketlist #tripblazers

Made a stop at Evora and there I was..enjoying the bird's eye view from 16,404.2ft for a 75secs of 200km/h free fall. thanks to my tandem master, Fraustino for letting me to steer the parachute as well. So if you feel like getting that adrenaline pumping, just strap urself to a jumper n jump!! this one took me around €240 including videos and pictures. hoping one day i would be able to take up the skydiving course & with that i can burn more calories but in a fun way. I took the jump through Skydive Portugal. the skydive drop zone located just one hour from Lisbon on the spectacular Alentejo. They operate all-year-round (7 days a week) and our location ensures great weather conditions, even during winter. #skydive #evora #portugal #freefall #adrenalinejunkie #diving #outdoors

I Love Évora. It’s an old city, capital from Alentejo’s state in Portugal. It is so charming. This was my first time there and I couldn’t believe how beautiful it is. There are many restaurants, bars and shops in the downtown. You can find really good Portuguese food in the main square in front of the church. 👏🏻 There is also a very famous church builded by bones. I recommend you to visit Évora in your next trip to Portugal! #summervacation

We booked a day in Evora with Fernando, and it truly exceeded our expectations. Fernando is more than just a chauffeur—he’s part historian, part sociologist, offering deep insights into Portugal’s past and present. He has an amazing ability to tune into his guests’ interests and adjust the itinerary, either on the spot or in advance, to suit them perfectly. Our day included an unplanned stop at Setubal, where we visited the ancient hilltop fort of Sao Filipe. The fort provided breathtaking views of the Comporta beaches and the ocean—a hidden gem we wouldn’t have discovered without Fernando. We highly recommend spending at least a day or more with him!
