Sisters are here to help you avoid pitfalls! Just back from Bipenggou, the snowy mountains and lakes are breathtakingly beautiful, but the traps we fell into could pile up like mountains😭! This comprehensive guide covering transportation, routes, accommodation, and pitfalls is a hard-earned summary—bookmark it before you go!
🚗 Transportation: Choose from 3 options, don’t be a sucker
Chengdu → Bipenggou (about 200km, 3.5 hours by car)
• Self-driving: Navigate to "Bipenggou Visitor Center," highway + mountain roads, snow chains are a must in winter! Parking fee is 20 RMB/day, flexible and free but requires solid driving skills.
• Public transport: From Chadianzi Bus Station → Lixian County bus (65 RMB, 2h) → transfer to scenic area shuttle (15 RMB/person, 30min), cheaper but limited schedules, buy return tickets in advance.
• Group tours: The lazy choice! Includes tickets, accommodation, and transport, no hassle, but beware of forced spending on cheap tours.
Within the scenic area (must buy!)
• Sightseeing bus: 60 RMB round trip, 26km of mountain roads, mandatory ride, 40 minutes to Shanghaizi Station, stops at Longwanghai on the way.
• Electric carts: Two segments, Shanghaizi → Panyang Lake (30 RMB round trip), Panyang Lake → Swallow Rock Nest (30 RMB round trip). High-altitude hiking is exhausting; if your stamina is average, buy the full route!
🏔️ Itinerary: 2 days 1 night golden route, avoid 90% of pitfalls
Day 1 Chengdu → Bipenggou → Putou Town / Guergou
• Morning: Arrive at the visitor center before 9 AM, take the sightseeing bus directly to Shanghaizi (don’t get off at Longwanghai! The mountain views are better)
• Noon: Shanghaizi → Panyang Lake (electric cart / 4.5km hike), the snow-capped mountains reflected in the lake are stunning, bring your own lunch (scenic area restaurants are expensive and bad)
• Afternoon: Panyang Lake → Swallow Rock Nest (electric cart), altitude 3850m, triple hit of sea of clouds + snowy mountains + colorful forests, wear light-colored clothes for great photos
• Evening: Return to the scenic area entrance, stay in Putou Town (15 minutes by car) or Guergou (hot springs)
Day 2 Putou Town → Lixiaolu → Siguniang Mountain → Chengdu
• Morning: Lixiaolu’s stunning free viewing platform, every shot is wallpaper-worthy
• Afternoon: Siguniang Mountain’s Shuangqiao Valley, explore deeply if time allows
Top 3 Must-Visit Spots
1. Panyang Lake: The core attraction, lake water as blue as a gem, snow mountains reflected perfectly, breathtaking red leaf season from late October to early November
2. Swallow Rock Nest: The highest point in the scenic area, sea of clouds rolling + frost corridor, go one hour before sunrise, morning mist wrapping the snowy mountains looks like a scene from a Studio Ghibli film
3. Namu Lake: Boardwalk winding along the lake, winter has a blue ice spectacle, great for portraits, wear bright colors for better photos
🏨 Accommodation Suggestions: 3 options, from budget to luxury
1. Inside the scenic area: Namu Lake Hot Spring Hotel
• The only accommodation inside the scenic area, private hot spring in-room, open the window to see snowy mountains, soaking in hot springs under the stars at night is super healing
• Price: Off-season 600 RMB/night, peak season 800-1300 RMB/night, book 15 days in advance, suitable for sisters with a generous budget.
2. Putou Town (Highly recommended!)
• Closest to the scenic area (15 minutes by car), many guesthouses and B&Bs, 150-300 RMB per person, great value
• Recommended: Tibetan family guesthouses with floor heating + Tibetan cuisine experience, join bonfire parties at night to experience Tibetan culture.
3. Guergou Town
• The only hot spring area in Lixian County, Ramada Hot Spring Hotel is the top choice for soaking, perfect to relax after sightseeing
• Downside: Half an hour from the scenic area, a bit inconvenient for round trips, best for staying the night before heading back.
⚠️ Tips: Hard lessons learned, avoid detours
1. Altitude sickness warning: Over 3000m altitude, don’t wash your hair or bathe on the first day! Bring Rhodiola + glucose, drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous exercise
2. Clothing guide: Winter down jacket + shell jacket + thermal pants + snow boots, windproof and warm is priority, strong UV rays, bring sunglasses + sunscreen + hat
3. Save on tickets: Buy tickets 3 days in advance on the official mini-program, 20 RMB cheaper than on-site, student tickets half price (70 RMB)
4. Food tips: Scenic area food is expensive and bad, bring self-heating rice + chocolate + hot water, Tibetan and Sichuan cuisine in Putou Town are cost-effective
5. Best photo times: 9-11 AM and 3-5 PM for best light, avoid harsh noon light, snow glare is strong, sunglasses are a must
6. Safety first: Roads icy in winter, walk slowly, don’t get close to cliff edges when taking photos, watch out for falling rocks
Final reminder: Bipenggou is most beautiful during the red leaf season from late October to early November and the ice and snow season from December to February. Traveling off-peak offers a better experience! Don’t rush just for the scenery, do your homework first, take beautiful photos with your sisters, and have a fun and worry-free trip~
