Stepping away from the bustling tourist pace, slowing down in Miyaji was one of my favorite moments in Kumamoto. This is the town in front of Aso Shrine, a small street that retains the charm of old houses, wagashi shops, and local diners. Walking along the road, you can smell the air mixed with the scent of wooden houses and a faint hint of sulfur—very "Aso." As you stroll along the street, you can look up to see the ridgeline of the Aso Five Peaks, understated yet strikingly present. Occasionally, you might encounter locals riding bicycles and greeting you, a kind of unpretentious daily life that is truly captivating.
