I followed a tour group guide for half an hour, and after listening to the explanation, looking at those plaques and couplets felt like a completely different experience. The sunset dyed the entire ancient city gold, and the distant roof ridges and tree shadows merged into one. That scene will truly make you quiet down. Below the pavilion are old streets and alleys. You can stroll to the Military Academy Square, where locals dance and take walks in the evening. It's full of life. ⛰️ The next day, go to the Mancheng Han Tombs, it's worth it This place is relatively niche, but I think it's very worth visiting. The tomb of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan in the Western Han Dynasty, is on the mountain in Mancheng. The scenic area is built along the mountain. If you go in autumn, the ancient tomb complex is surrounded by forests, which is very serene. The Jade Burial Suit and the Changxin Palace Lamp were unearthed in the tomb (of course, the originals are in the museum, but there are replicas on display here). But just standing in a tomb from over 2,000 years ago and imagining the burial culture of that time is already very shocking. It takes about 20 minutes to climb the mountain, which isn't tiring. It was the headquarters of the Huai Army run by Li Hongzhang back then. The architecture is very distinctive, and it's very uncrowded. One more thing: the biggest feeling Baoding gave me is that it's "genuine." The attractions don't have flashy packaging, ticket prices are fair, and the locals are enthusiastic. If you ask for directions on the road, an elderly person might tell you about the history of this city for ten minutes. A city that doesn't deliberately cater to tourists is actually the most comfortable. The place I stayed this time was right on the edge of the ancient city, a homestay converted from an old courtyard. Pushing the door open, there's a small courtyard paved with bluestone, with a few clumps of bamboo planted in the corner. The wooden window lattices in the room are still old items, and at night it's so quiet you can hear the rustling of the wind blowing through the leaves. The owner is a local from Baoding who will draw you a hand-painted map of the alleys, tell you which path to take to save half an hour, and remind you not to buy things at the entrance of the scenic spots. Baoding is a city that isn't noisy or pretentious; it just quietly waits there for you to discover it.
