🇬🇧 EP.4 | Lower Slaughter, Cotswolds

A small village by the river, so quiet you'll want to stay longer 🌿🏡

If you want to discover a more tranquil side of the Cotswolds than Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water, I highly recommend adding Lower Slaughter to your itinerary. 🤍

This small village sits by the River Eye, with golden stone houses lined up along the stream, small stone bridges, and very natural-looking flower gardens—some spots even look like scenes from an English movie 🎞️🌿

Interestingly, the name "Slaughter" has nothing to do with killing animals or anything scary. It originates from the Old English word slohtre, meaning a damp or muddy area by a stream.

✨ Must-see spots:
· River Eye — the heart of the village • Clear water flows past stone houses and small bridges.
· The Old Mill — an old mill by the river and one of the iconic images of Lower Slaughter.
· Copse Hill Road — a small street lined with golden stone houses.
· St Mary’s Church — an old church situated slightly higher than the village.
· The walking trail to Upper Slaughter, approximately 1 mile, is perfect for a leisurely stroll 🌳

🚶♀️ Highly Recommended Trip
If you have time, don't just visit Lower Slaughter. Try walking to Upper Slaughter along the River Eye trail, about 1 mile, which takes around 25 minutes at a leisurely pace. It's a relatively flat path, passing through meadows and the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

🚆 Transportation
The nearest train station is Moreton-in-Marsh. From there, take a bus or taxi to the Slaughters area. Another, more enjoyable route is to start from Bourton-on-the-Water and walk to Lower Slaughter, about 1.5 miles. 🌿

💷 Entrance Fees
The village itself and the walk along the River Eye are free, but some attractions or services, such as the Old Mill, may have different fees and opening hours. Check before you go!

📸 My favorite spot:
Morning or evening, walk along the river and photograph the stone houses reflected in the water. The atmosphere is softer and more natural than during the crowded midday.

And one more thing to know — Lower Slaughter is a real village. Many houses are private residences, so please be quiet and don't intrude on private property when you're walking around. 🤍

There are no big landmarks, no shops lining the streets, and nothing to rush through…just the sound of water, old stone houses, and narrow streets that make you want to keep walking. 🌿

🚗 Visit the Cotswold Motoring Museum: A Classic Car Museum in the Cotswolds 🇬🇧

While visiting the beautiful villages of the Cotswolds, another must-see is the Cotswold Motoring Museum. Hidden away in a charming English-style stone building, the exterior blends perfectly with the village.

Inside, you'll find a collection of classic cars, motorcycles, advertising signs, collectibles, and artifacts from various eras, all showcasing the history of vehicles and transportation. It's a delightful experience, like stepping back in time to experience old England. 🚘✨

Another highlight that many will remember is Brum, the little yellow car from the British children's series, which has a special connection to the museum. Those who grew up with the show will feel a special sense of nostalgia.

The museum isn't very large, making it ideal for a quick visit while strolling through the village. For those who love classic cars, vintage items, or want something different from photographing the stone houses and nature of the Cotswolds, this is another interesting spot. 🤎
