It was founded in the sixth year of the Yuan Yanyou era (1319) by the grand master of the Xuanjiao sect, Zhang Liusun, and his disciple Wu Quanjie, who raised funds for its construction. It was completed in the third year of the Zhi era (1323) and was named Dongyue Ren Sheng Palace, mainly worshipping the deity of Mount Tai, the East Peak Emperor. The Dongyue Temple in Beijing faces south and is composed of three parts: the main courtyard, the east courtyard, and the west courtyard. The main courtyard of Beijing Dongyue Temple has six main buildings along the central axis, from south to north in order: the Glazed Tile Archway, Lingxing Gate (main gate), Zhandai Gate, Daiyue Hall (front hall Ren Sheng Palace), Yude Hall (rear hall), and the rear cover building, with the temple consisting of six courtyards. Beijing Dongyue Temple is divided into 7 areas, among which the first area is Dongyue Temple Square (entrance in front of the main gate); the second area is the square in front of Zhandai Gate; the third area is the square in front of Daiyue Hall; the fourth area is to the east of Yude Hall; the fifth area is to the west of Yude Hall; the sixth area is the rear part of Yude Hall (exhibition area); and the seventh area is the non-open area of Dongyue Temple, mainly Dongyue Temple East Road. In the third area of Beijing Dongyue Temple (Daiyue Hall Square), there is a 'Fortune Path', with a royal stele pavilion on each side of the path, with the west one being the Qianlong Royal Stele and the east one being the Kangxi Royal Stele; in front and behind the stele pavilions is a forest of steles. Around the Daiyue Hall Square, there are seventy-six departments, with the Guangsi Hall and Fufu Hall on the east and west sides, respectively. On the west side of the Fortune Path, there is a jade horse, and on the east side, there is a bronze statue. In the third and sixth areas of Dongyue Temple, there are longevity locust trees respectively. Statues: In addition to the statues of the East Peak Emperor and the seventy-six departmental gods, Beijing Dongyue Temple once housed up to three thousand god statues, including the Jade Emperor, Wenchang Dijun, Guan Sheng Dijun, Zhenwu Emperor, as well as the Goddess of Offspring, the Gods of Literature, Military, and Wealth, the Matchmaker who grants people marriage, the Five Plague Gods who remove epidemics, the Medicine King who heals diseases, the Granary God who protects granaries, and the Kitchen God, as well as folk deities such as the patron saint of the construction industry Lu Ban, the patron saint of mule and donkey transport Ma Wang Ye, and the patron saint of the Pear Garden realm, the God of Joy, among various other industry deities. Inscriptions: Another major feature of Beijing Dongyue Temple is the large number of inscriptions, totaling 163 pieces, with a folk saying that 'the number of steles in Dongyue Temple cannot be counted'. The earliest inscription is from the second year of the Yuan Tianli era (1329) titled 'Imperial Grant to Open the Office of the Grand Master of the Xuanjiao Sect, Lord Zhang', and the latest is the Luban Association Stele erected in front of the new Luban Hall in the thirty-first year of the Republic of China (1942). Among the inscriptions of Beijing Dongyue Temple, the most numerous are those of the incense associations. Of the known 163 inscriptions, 135 were erected by various incense associations. The incense associations of Dongyue Temple were groups of people from all walks of life who served the temple fairs of Dongyue Temple. During the period from 1966 to 1976, the inscriptions in the temple were severely damaged, with many steles buried underground. Couplets and Plaques: The couplets are another major scenic feature of Beijing Dongyue Temple. Most of the halls in the temple have couplets with white backgrounds and black characters in small seal script. The content of the couplets reflects the rich traditional Chinese ethical and moral concepts. For example, in front of Zhandai Gate, there is a couplet that reads 'In the world of the living, all treacherous heroes who defy heaven and harm reason come from oneself; in the underworld, who has ever been spared from retribution throughout ancient and modern times?'. After the opening of Beijing Dongyue Temple, the couplets were gradually restored, with the text written by contemporary domestic calligraphers, including the five styles of seal, cursive, seal, official, and running script. 🎟️Ticket Information: 10 yuan 💗Other tips:
