Choose an early morning to ride a willow-leaf boat through the karst peaks. The oars stir the emerald lake water, startling a few water birds skimming the surface, while the karst mountains on both sides unfold like an ink painting. No need to deliberately look for scenic spots; every snapshot is wallpaper-worthy—the sunlight filters through the mist onto lotus leaves, water droplets fall into the lake, and smoke curls up from Yi villages on the shore. Along the way, I met an elderly lady selling lotus flowers and bought a freshly picked pink lotus for two yuan, walking forward accompanied by the floral fragrance, feeling overwhelmingly happy. Before leaving, I bought a jar of handmade fermented tofu; the owner said it’s fermented with local well water, and it’s so fragrant that it makes you want to lick the plate when mixed with noodles at home. In the evening at Puzhehei Village, I unexpectedly encountered Yi women dancing the Xianzi dance, their colorful embroidered aprons fluttering with their steps. They warmly invited me to join; although my hands and feet were uncoordinated, swaying to the lively rhythm made all my worries disappear. The bonfire party at night was even more healing, with villagers and tourists singing and dancing around the fire. Some played the sanhu and rapped, others taught folk lantern songs. The firelight reflected on everyone’s smiling faces, instantly closing the distance between strangers. The next day, I visited the county’s Confucian Temple, where red walls and black tiles stood among towering ancient trees. It was so quiet you could hear the wind rustling the leaves, as if traveling back in time. Tips: Staying in Xianrendong Village is more convenient than outside the scenic area, within walking distance to the boat dock; be sure to travel early morning or evening to avoid the midday sun; for a deeper experience, visit Sheded Grassland, where horseback riding and watching the sea of clouds is incredibly pleasant.
