Diebu travel guide and discussion

Deep in Gannan, Zhagana unfolds beneath towering cliffs and dramatic stone peaks. Mist drifts slowly through the valleys, softening the rugged mountains and giving the entire landscape an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Traditional wooden houses are scattered across green meadows and mountain slopes, while wisps of cooking smoke rise gently into the cool alpine air. Against the immense backdrop of rock and sky, everyday village life feels wonderfully small and peaceful. Walk along the mountain paths and the scenery changes with every turn — mossy slopes, wild grasses, distant peaks and clouds moving through the valleys. The fragrance of vegetation carried by the mountain breeze adds another layer to the experience. Zhagana's beauty is not only in its spectacular scenery, but also in its sense of distance from the outside world. Here, life seems to follow the rhythm of the mountains rather than the clock. 📍 Zhagana Scenic Area, Diebu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu, China 🇨🇳 🚗 How to Get There: The most convenient way is by private car, chartered vehicle or organised tour. From Lanzhou, travel towards Diebu County, then continue to Zhagana. The journey involves long stretches of mountain roads, so allow plenty of time and check road and weather conditions before travelling. 📸 Photography Tip: Early morning is ideal for capturing mist lingering around the peaks. From an elevated viewpoint, use the wooden houses and meadows in the foreground to show the dramatic scale of the surrounding mountains. ✨ Signature Feeling: Misty peaks, alpine meadows, wooden homes and the quiet rhythm of mountain life. Above the clouds, Zhagana feels like a village where the mountains have kept time still.

I share my travel experiences to everyone, and today I want to transport you to Zagana Village, an absolute stunner tucked away in Gansu Province, China. This place is seriously underrated, and honestly, pictures just can't do it full justice. It's like stepping into a forgotten fairytale, nestled deep in the Diebu Mountains and largely untouched by the massive waves of tourists that dominate other popular Chinese spots. When I first arrived, after a journey that felt incredibly adventurous, I was floored. This is not some polished, manicured village; it's a living, breathing Tibetan settlement right where the mountains embrace the sky. The air is ridiculously fresh, and the silence is so profound you can almost hear the mountains whisper their age-old stories. Imagine waking up to that golden light hitting the snow-capped peaks, and seeing the mist rise gently from the valley—it’s pure magic. Zagana is a place where you genuinely disconnect from the modern world and connect with nature on a deep level, which is why I'm so passionate about sharing it. What’s even more fascinating about this underrated gem is its history and backstory. Long ago, Zagana was a crucial caravan stop along the ancient tea-horse road, a winding network through some of the most challenging terrain imaginable. While other famous ancient towns along this route have completely modernized and are now overflowing with gift shops, Zagana feels stubbornly, and beautifully, frozen in time. The traditional wooden and stone-mud Tibetan houses, built directly into the steep slopes, look exactly like the descriptions I'd read from centuries-old records, and you can still see evidence of the old trading pathways. The villagers’ lives are deeply intertwined with the landscape, with prayer flags fluttering over the valleys and small monasteries providing a spiritual heartbeat. When I was there, I had conversations (mostly through hand gestures and smiles!) with locals who still practice traditional farming and livestock herding, a way of life that has barely changed over hundreds of years. This authenticity is incredibly rare and precious. Learning about the village’s past makes you appreciate how it has survived and retained its unique character, making every corner feel like a discovered secret. When I visited, I dedicated my time to simply wandering and soaking it all in. I spent hours walking along narrow paths that are mostly used by villagers and their yaks, leading me to viewpoints with jaw-dropping panoramas. You can see how the fields are intricately terraced, a testament to centuries of resilience. There are several small monasteries in and around the village, offering places of calm contemplation that are a world away from bustling urban life. The local Tibetan population is incredibly warm and welcoming, always quick with a friendly greeting or an offer of butter tea. Even though there isn't much in the way of "tourist infrastructure," the food here is hearty and satisfying, filled with local ingredients that taste like the mountain themselves. I loved just sitting quietly, watching the sun paint new colors on the cliffs and the stars pop out in a perfectly dark sky. Zagana is not just a place you see; it’s a place you feel, and that’s why I will never stop recommending it as one of the ultimate underrated travel experiences. If you crave authenticity and breathtaking beauty, this is your next destination. #UnderratedChina #Zagannature #TibetanVillageGansu #GansuProvinceHiddenGemem #Zagana_Gansu #ChineseFairyTale #OffTheBeatenPathChinaa #AncientTeaHorseRoad #TibetanCulture #NaturalBeauty #HiddenTibet #underratedspots

Deep in the mountains of Zhagana, southern Gansu, there is a dramatic canyon known as Yixiantian, literally meaning “a line of heaven.” The name is wonderfully fitting. Here, enormous cliffs rise tightly on both sides of the valley, creating a narrow natural corridor through the mountains. In the narrowest sections, the passage is barely wide enough for a vehicle to pass. Looking upward, the towering rock walls almost meet, leaving only a thin ribbon of sky visible overhead. It is one of those landscapes where the sense of scale is difficult to capture in a photograph. The cliffs seem to rise endlessly above you, while the valley floor remains surprisingly narrow below. A clear mountain stream rushes through the canyon, adding movement and sound to an otherwise immense and imposing landscape. The deeper the canyon becomes, the more enclosed it feels. There are no wide horizons here. Instead, the scenery is concentrated vertically—rock walls, layers of stone, patches of vegetation and that narrow strip of blue sky far above. Geologically, the area is associated with karst terrain, with limestone and dolomite among the principal rocks. The erosion and weathering of these formations over geological time have created the steep cliffs, narrow valleys and distinctive rock formations that give Yixiantian its character. There is something almost cinematic about the landscape. The road winds through the valley, following the stream as the mountains close in around it. From certain angles, the cliffs appear almost impossibly steep, while the tiny road and vehicles below provide a reminder of just how enormous the surrounding landscape really is. And then there is the silence of the mountains. Even with the sound of flowing water, the canyon feels remarkably removed from the ordinary world. The combination of rugged rock, cool water and high mountain walls creates an atmosphere that is both dramatic and strangely peaceful. Yixiantian is not a landscape of gentle curves or expansive views. It is a landscape of verticality and compression—a place where mountains dominate everything and the sky becomes a narrow opening above. Perhaps that is exactly what makes it so memorable. You don't simply look at the mountains here. You stand between them. 📍 Yixiantian, Zhagana Scenic Area, Diebu County, Gannan, Gansu, China 🇨🇳 📸 Photography Tip: Use the narrow opening of sky as a natural leading line. Shooting from a low angle can emphasize the height of the cliffs, while including the stream or a vehicle provides a useful sense of scale. ✨ Towering cliffs, a rushing mountain stream and a single ribbon of sky. In Yixiantian, the mountains don't merely surround the landscape—they become the landscape. 🏔️🌊

#adventuretrips If you’re chasing authentic, raw #adventuretrips away from crowded tourist traps, ZhaGaNa in Gansu is hands down one of Asia’s best hidden wilderness adventures. This trip wasn’t just sightseeing—it was a full-day mountain hike that challenged my pace, rewarded my effort, and made me fall in love with untamed alpine nature. I started my adventure early in the morning, leaving the quiet Tibetan village behind to explore ZhaGaNa’s iconic primitive trails. Unlike paved scenic spots, most paths here are natural wild tracks winding through dense forests, alpine meadows, and towering limestone cliffs. I walked through the famous “One-Line Sky” gorge, where steep rock walls stand incredibly close, leaving only a narrow strip of sky above my head. The sound of flowing valley streams echoed all around, making every step feel immersive and adventurous. As I climbed higher, the landscape shifted completely. Flat grasslands bloomed with tiny wildflowers, while jagged stone peaks rose sharply from the valley floor, forming a stunning natural stone city. The air grew crisp and thin at high altitude, and I had to slow down constantly to adjust my breath. There were no crowded boardwalks or loud vendors, only pure, untouched wilderness stretching endlessly. What makes ZhaGaNa a perfect #adventuretrips destination is its balanced challenge. It’s not extreme or dangerous, but it requires stamina, focus, and patience. Every steep ascent opens up a brand-new panoramic view of layered mountains, floating valley mist, and scattered Tibetan villages far below. Standing on the high ridge overlooking the entire gorge, I felt an incredible sense of freedom and accomplishment. This adventure taught me that the best travel memories come from journeys that push you gently out of your comfort zone. ZhaGaNa isn’t just beautiful—it feels alive, wild, and genuine. I want to hear your thoughts! Do you prefer easy casual hikes or challenging wilderness adventures that bring bigger rewards? Have you ever explored ZhaGaNa or any underrated alpine adventure spots? Hey adventuretrips fam, I have to talk about Zhagana because this spot in southern Gansu completely blew my expectations away—in the absolute best way possible. I arrived expecting a quaint Tibetan village. What I found was a stone fortress surrounded by jagged limestone peaks that looked like God had stacked rocks for fun. It’s like Middle-earth meets the Himalayas, but a total hidden gem. Day one was the iconic Xiannütan (Fairy Pool) trail. We followed a wooden boardwalk through dense forest, crossed a shaky log bridge over a river so blue it looked unreal, and then—boom—the trail just vanished into a wild alpine meadow where yaks were lounging like they owned the place. No markers. No GPS signal. Just us and this insane panorama of vertical cliffs and prayer flags fluttering in the wind. The real adventure hit on day two. I took the ridge trail toward Laka Valley alone because my buddy was down with altitude sickness. Three hours in, the fog swallowed everything. I couldn't see five meters ahead. Was it terrifying? Yes. But then the clouds split open and I was standing above a sea of mist with snow-dusted peaks poking through like islands. I cried. I'm not even kidding. A local Tibetan herder found me, offered me yak butter tea, and walked me back to the village, laughing at my shaky legs. This is what adventure is all about—raw, unpredictable, and soul-shaking. Real talk: What's a place that looked tiny on the map but blew your mind in person? Ever been rescued by a stranger on a trail? Tell me everything! 👇🏔️

I was completely mesmerized 🤯 📅 3 days 2 nights itinerary (tested and relaxed) Day 1: Arrival + acclimatization to the plateau Arrive in Zhagana in the afternoon, stroll around the village to adapt to the altitude, avoid strenuous exercise At dusk, go to Luoke Viewing Platform to watch the sunset. The golden sunlight shining on the stone mountains is breathtaking Day 2: Sunrise + deep hiking Wake up at 5:30 AM to watch the sunrise and sea of clouds at Dari Viewing Platform (highlight moment!) Return to the village in the morning for a nap and breakfast In the afternoon, take a light hike at Fairy Beach, take photos on the meadow At dusk, visit Yeri Village to see barley fields and Tibetan village scenery Day 3: Off-the-beaten-path route + return trip Morning hike in Runwu Valley, waterfalls and streams are super refreshing Have Tibetan food in the village at noon Return in the afternoon 🌅 Sunrise at Dari Viewing Platform (a must-see once in a lifetime) Trust me, no matter how lazy you are, you have to get up early to see the sunrise once! I got up at 5 AM and walked to the viewing platform in the dark. The sky wasn’t bright yet, and stars were still hanging above. Around 6 AM, the horizon started to turn red, then mist slowly rose from the valley, wrapping around the stone peaks like a jade belt. When the first ray of sunlight hit the knife-cut rocks, the whole valley lit up, smoke rose from village chimneys, and distant dog barks echoed. The feeling is indescribable, I almost cried. ⚠️ Tips: · Dress warmly! It’s really cold in the morning. I went in July, and it was about 50°F (10°C) in the morning · Bring a thermos with hot water, a sip on the viewing platform warms your heart · Check the sunrise time in advance, don’t be late · You can ride a horse up for 50 RMB per person to save energy 🌿 Fairy Beach is incredibly healing Fairy Beach is a high mountain meadow with well-built wooden boardwalks, easy to walk. In July, the meadow is lush green, dotted with wildflowers, with gray-white stone peaks in the distance creating a strong contrast. I recommend going after 5 PM, when the sunset casts a golden light, turning the meadow golden. Photos come out with a natural filter. Wear a bright-colored dress, run and jump on the meadow, the flowing skirt looks so lively, every shot is a masterpiece. If you have good stamina, you can continue up to Fairy Lake, but honestly, it’s just a small pond, no need to go specifically. The scenery along the way is the real highlight. 🏔️ Runwu Valley hike (a summer cool treasure) This place has very few tourists, mostly locals. It was recommended by the guesthouse owner. The valley has streams and waterfalls, very refreshing, like a natural air-conditioned room in summer. The hike is easy, about 1 hour total, mostly flat and gentle slopes, suitable for beginners. The water is very clear, you can take off your shoes and step in the water, icy cold and super comfortable. Remember to bring slippers. 🍲 Eating in Zhagana You must try Tibetan food! Tsampa: mixed with butter tea and barley flour, might be an acquired taste at first, but the more you chew, the more fragrant it gets Yak meat hotpot: the yak meat is very generous, a big pot enough for 2-3 people, paired with local wild vegetables, absolutely delicious Yogurt: homemade by local Tibetans, very sour, needs a lot of sugar to taste good, but the flavor is very authentic Barley wine: low alcohol, sweet, girls can drink a little Village restaurants are affordable, about 30-50 RMB per person for a good meal, and the owners are very friendly. ⚠️ Important reminders 1. Altitude sickness: Zhagana is about 3000 meters above sea level. Most people are fine, but don’t run or jump when you first arrive, acclimate slowly 2. Sun protection: UV rays are very strong on the plateau. Use sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, masks—full protection 3. Weather: Mountain weather changes quickly, sunny one moment, rainy the next. Always carry an umbrella and jacket 4. Signal: Village signal is weak. China Mobile is a bit better, China Telecom and Unicom are worse. Download offline maps in advance 5. Driving: Mountain roads have many curves. Beginners should be cautious. It’s recommended to hire a car or carpool Zhagana is truly like a paradise on earth. Spending a few days there calms your whole being. Highly recommend you go! · -- Accommodation 🏨 Chenxi·Vacilando | Zhagana Yunshanju Wild Luxury Resort (Zhagana Scenic Area Branch) Tibetan-style architecture + natural wood texture, 180° floor-to-ceiling windows facing the stone forest, butler serves warm hand Tibetan tea, bonfire movie nights create a great atmosphere 🏨 Zhagana Yun Jing Wild Tent Hotel Starry sky rooms to lie down and watch the Milky Way, flower garden villas + Mexican tents with various room types, bar tent for relaxation, full wild luxury experience 🏨 Shanwang·Holiday | Milky Way Sunrise Viewing Boutique Hotel (Zhagana Scenic Area Dari Viewing Platform Branch) Watch the sunrise over Zhagana’s main peak from bed, deep sleep bedding + oxygen equipment, 180° panoramic views are stunning 🏨 Diebu Xilelin Garden • staycation • Detached Mountain Boutique Guesthouse 10 wabi-sabi style detached cabins facing Hutou Snow Mountain, private gardens, fall asleep to the sound of river water, very private · --

In the scorching summer with no place to hide, we've discovered a hidden paradise accessible by high-speed rail plus a short trip—Zhagana in Gannan, Gansu! The Tibetan name means "stone box," a Tibetan village tucked deep in the mountains where the average summer temperature is below 20°C. At night, it’s so cold you need a down jacket, making it feel nothing like summer. 🏔️ Why must you visit Zhagana in June? Zhagana is truly an underrated summer retreat in Northwest China, easier to reach than Tibet and quieter than Qinghai: ✅ Just right distance: 1 hour by high-speed train from Lanzhou to Minxian Station, then about 3 hours by car to Zhagana, with Tibetan scenery all along the way ✅ Cool as autumn: Summer average temperature below 20°C, 15°C cooler than Lanzhou, 17°C cooler than Xi’an, you’ll need a stove to keep warm at night ✅ Stunning scenery: Snow-capped mountains, stone forests, meadows, Tibetan villages, temples, morning mist—step into a fairyland ✅ Few people, peaceful: Not yet overrun by tour groups, only elderly locals spinning prayer wheels and cats basking in the sun in the villages ✅ Authentic Tibetan flavor: Pristine Tibetan villages where butter tea and chanting are the daily soundtrack June in Zhagana leaves visitors speechless—the morning mist weaves between the stone mountains like a light veil, golden rapeseed fields and lush green barley fields form colorful patchworks, smoke drifts from wooden roofs in the Tibetan villages, wildflowers bloom on the meadows of Fairy Beach, and standing atop the mountain, your heart skips a beat. 🗺️ Suggested itinerary Zhagana’s attractions are concentrated between the valley and mid-mountain areas. We recommend 3 days and 2 nights for a relaxed and immersive experience: Day 1: Minxian Station → Dongwa Village in Zhagana → Stay in Tibetan guesthouse Day 2: Dari Viewing Platform (sunrise) → Fairy Beach → Fairy Lake → Stay in Tibetan guesthouse Day 3: Runwu Valley → Lasang Monastery → Return to Minxian 🌟 Must-visit spots in Zhagana 1️⃣ Zhagana Stone Mountains “The Stone Castle Molded by the Creator” Zhagana is surrounded by a ring of gray-white stone mountains with steep, knife-cut-like cliffs and sharp peaks. In June, green grass and yellow flowers carpet the foothills, creating a striking contrast with the rugged stones and soft meadows. Every morning, clouds rise from the valley, making the stone mountains appear ethereal and unreal. 👶 Tip for families: At about 2800 meters elevation, walk slowly and avoid running or jumping; dress warmly for kids. 2️⃣ Dari Viewing Platform “The Divine Spot for Sunrise and Mist” The widest viewpoint in Zhagana, facing the entire stone mountain range and four Tibetan villages. Arrive around 6 AM to see the morning light spill over the mountains, turning the peaks golden, with milky clouds swirling in the valley and wooden roofs peeking through the mist. Standing here, you feel all your fatigue blown away by the morning breeze. 3️⃣ Fairy Beach “Alpine Meadows Embraced by Mountains” A large open meadow halfway up the mountain, lush green like matcha cake in June, dotted with yellow and purple wildflowers. Sitting here, you get a panoramic view of Zhagana framed naturally by the stone mountains, with the village spread out below. Many people picnic or daydream here for hours, too relaxed to think about anything else. 4️⃣ Fairy Lake “A Little Blue Gem Hidden Behind the Stone Mountains” A bit further up from Fairy Beach, the lake’s water is unbelievably blue, surrounded on three sides by stone mountains. In June, rhododendrons bloom perfectly by the shore, their pink and white flowers reflected in the cool blue-green water, creating a serene and gentle scene. The water is icy cold—dip your feet in while sitting on the rocks and feel the chill rush to your head. 5️⃣ Runwu Valley “A Secret Stream in the Primeval Forest” The coolest hiking route in Zhagana, following a mountain stream through dense primeval forest. In June, the stream is full and lively, splashing white waves over the stones, with the scent of pine and damp earth in the air. The deeper you go, the cooler it gets, dropping several degrees, making it feel nothing like summer. 6️⃣ Lasang Monastery “A Century-old Buddhist Temple at the Mountain Foot” A Tibetan Buddhist temple in the village, its golden roof and white walls stand out against the stone mountain backdrop. In June, wildflowers bloom on the grass in front of the temple, monks sit on the steps basking in the sun, prayer wheels creak softly, and devotees walk around the temple in circles. Step inside to sit quietly—the scent of butter lamps and low chanting instantly calms the mind. 📸 Photo tips: Tibetan masterpieces to flood your social feed ✅ Sunrise at Dari Viewing Platform: Stone mountains bathed in golden light, clouds swirling in the valley, smoke rising from village roofs ✅ Fairy Beach meadow: Sit among flowers for panoramic shots, stone mountains as a natural frame, small people big scenery for a stunning effect ✅ By Fairy Lake: Blue-green water and pink-white rhododendrons create a cool, tranquil reflection scene ✅ Midstream in Runwu Valley: Green mossy stones and white splashes in the foreground, deep forest background ✅ In front of Lasang Monastery’s golden roof: White walls, golden roof, distant stone mountains, prayer flags fluttering in the wind ✅ Tibetan village wooden alleys: Stone paths and old wooden walls, yaks slowly passing by for an authentic daily vibe ✅ Outfit: Tibetan red shawls or bright jackets stand out beautifully against green meadows and gray-white mountains ✅ Best times: 5-7 AM for morning mist and sunrise, 4-6 PM for soft slanting light on the stone mountains 🍜 Zhagana Food Recommendations ✅ Tibetan Zanba: Roasted barley flour mixed with butter tea, energy-packed, perfect for high-altitude hiking, about 10 RMB per person ✅ Yak Meat Soup: Clear broth made from local yak bones, sprinkled with scallions and pepper, incredibly fresh, about 25 RMB per person ✅ Butter Tea: Salty and rich, a bowl warms you up at high altitude, homemade by Tibetan moms, about 15 RMB per person ✅ Barley Wine: Mild and slightly sweet, warms the stomach, perfect to sip in the courtyard after meals, about 15 RMB per person ✅ Tibetan Buns: Thin-skinned buns stuffed with yak meat, juicy with broth, 20 RMB per basket enough for two 📝 Super practical tips Transportation: High-speed rail: Arrive at Minxian Station, 1 hour direct from Lanzhou, then about 3 hours by car to Zhagana Self-drive: From Lanzhou via Lanhai Expressway and National Highway 212, about 6 hours, stunning scenery in Gannan section Car hire: Local car hire from Minxian Station to Zhagana costs about 400-500 RMB one way, mountain roads are winding, local drivers are reliable Ticket info: Zhagana Scenic Area: 80 RMB per person in peak season (buy on entry), free for children under 1.2 meters Dari Viewing Platform: Included in ticket Fairy Beach and Fairy Lake: Included in ticket Runwu Valley: Included in ticket Lasang Monastery: Free (donations welcome) Avoid pitfalls: ❌ Zhagana altitude 2800-3200m, don’t bathe or do strenuous exercise on the first day, acclimate first ❌ Huge temperature difference between day and night, 25°C daytime can drop to 5°C at night, down jackets are not an exaggeration ❌ UV rays stronger than at the beach, apply sunscreen thoroughly and wear sunglasses, sunburn takes weeks to fade ❌ Village accommodations are simple, hot water supply may be unstable, be prepared ❌ Poor mobile signal in the mountains, inform family in advance, download offline maps Packing suggestions: 👕 Tops: Quick-dry long sleeves + fleece + windbreaker, layer for all-day comfort 👖 Bottoms: Windproof pants, mornings are dewy on the meadows, avoid thin fabrics 👟 Shoes: Waterproof hiking shoes, Fairy Lake trail can be muddy 🧢 Extras: Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, scarf (warm and photogenic), down jacket Best time to visit: June to September is Zhagana’s most beautiful season; June has fewer people, green grass, and early flowers, best value July and August have the deepest grass and fullest flowers but accommodation prices rise, each has its charm Plan 3 days to have enough time to catch good weather, sunrise, and morning mist 🏨 Accommodation recommendations 🏨 Tibetan Village Guesthouse Stay in a Tibetan family home in Dongwa Village, wooden building with windows facing the stone mountains, the host will share stories in broken Mandarin 🏨 Beach Tent Camp Wild luxury tents halfway up the mountain, open the curtain to panoramic mountain views, no need to rush for sunrise 🏨 Scenic Area Hotel More formal with heating, good for altitude acclimation and restful sleep, the host is a warm Tibetan mom 🏨 Village Viewing Guesthouse Closest to the viewing platform, sleep in a bit longer and still catch the sunrise, windows frame the view like a painting

⛰️Zhagana in June is an earthly paradise hidden in Gannan. As summer heatwaves sweep across the country, this secret realm, embraced by stone mountains, remains cool, tranquil, and lush. Zhagana, meaning "stone box" in Tibetan, is surrounded by mountains on all sides with towering cliffs. Original ecological Tibetan villages are scattered throughout the valleys, with layered terraced fields, dense vegetation, clouds and mist swirling around the mountains, and cooking smoke rising gently, outlining the most healing summer mountain scenery. Unlike the open landscapes of other parts of Northwest China, Zhagana is an ultimate tranquil secret realm. June is the best time to visit, with wildflowers blooming freely in the mountains, lush forests and vegetation, gurgling streams, and leisurely cattle and sheep. There's no hustle and bustle of over-commercialization, only the healing sensation of the original ecological mountains, making it an excellent destination to escape the city and relax in summer. ✨June Zhagana Must-Visit Routes | Beginner-Friendly For beginners, the Fairy Meadow - Fairy Lake loop is highly recommended. The entire route is low difficulty, incredibly scenic, and suitable for all ages. Starting from Dongwa Village, hike along the original forest trails, where vegetation is lush and a gentle breeze blows, offering a refreshing summer feel. In about half an hour, you'll reach the Fairy Meadow alpine meadow, an open expanse backed by majestic stone mountains, with green grass like a carpet and wildflowers dotting the landscape – an excellent spot for photos and relaxation. Continue uphill for another 40 minutes to reach Fairy Lake, a clear and tranquil alpine lake surrounded by mountains and forests, boasting stunning original ecological scenery. The entire round trip takes about 3 hours, with a relaxed pace, allowing you to enjoy the fun of hiking and immerse yourself in the mountain views. For a leisurely visit, check out Lasang Monastery, nestled halfway up the mountain and a core cultural attraction of Zhagana. From the monastery's viewing platform, you can overlook the entire valley village, with ancient and solemn Tibetan architecture and prayer flags fluttering in the wind, creating a tranquil and healing atmosphere. In the evening, wait for the sunset in the valley, as the setting sun paints the stone mountains and sea of clouds red, creating a magnificent and moving spectacle. 📸Panoramic Photo Spots | Unlock a Fairytale Vibe 1. Yeri Village Panoramic Viewing Platform: Overlook the four major villages of Zhagana, the entire stone mountain valley, and a prime spot for sea of clouds and sunrise. 2. Fairy Meadow: Alpine meadow + stone mountains in the same frame, fresh and healing, suitable for various styles of outfits. 3. Terraced Field Trails within the Village: Original ecological pastoral scenery, with cooking smoke, terraced fields, and villages blending together, full of life. For outfits, choose solid colors like white, beige, or navy blue, which are simple and elegant, fitting the secret mountain realm atmosphere. Ethnic shawls and long skirts are bonus items, making it easy to capture stunning photos with a fairytale vibe. 🍲Gannan Tibetan Cuisine | Original Ecological Healing Flavors Zhagana's cuisine primarily features original ecological Tibetan flavors, with ingredients sourced from local mountains and pastures, natural and pure. The Tibetan hotpot is a must-try, with a rich and savory broth slow-cooked from yak bones, paired with yak meat and wild vegetables, a balanced and warming, healing meal. The hand-grabbed yak meat is firm and rich in milky flavor, with no excessive seasoning, preserving the original taste of the ingredients for an excellent texture. Tibetan steamed buns have thin skins and ample fillings, packed with tender and juicy yak meat, bursting with flavor in every bite. Traditional butter tea is savory and mellow, warm and nourishing for the stomach, suitable for the high-altitude mountain climate, and helps relieve fatigue. Handmade highland barley tsampa and homemade yogurt are local specialties, sweet, sour, soft, and sticky, with a unique taste, offering an immersive experience of Tibetan dietary culture. 💡June Zhagana Travel Tips ▫️Climate: Mountain climate is changeable, cool in the morning and evening, comfortable during the day. Always carry a light windbreaker and rain gear. ▫️Altitude: Around 3000 meters (approx. 9840 feet). Walk steadily, avoid strenuous exercise, to prevent mild altitude sickness. ▫️Sun Protection: Mountain areas have strong UV rays and many insects due to dense vegetation. Ensure good sun protection and insect repellent. ▫️Customs: Respect Tibetan religious customs. Remove hats when entering temples, avoid loud noises, and ask for permission before taking photos of locals. ▫️Road Conditions: Mountain roads have many curves and some sections are narrow. Drive slowly and carefully, paying attention to road safety. Zhagana's summer holds the purest mountain romance. 📅 Travel Time: Late April 📍 Location: Zangbawa Town, Zhuoni, Gannan (Essence section of Luoke Road) In the Zangbawa section of Luoke Road lies a forgotten Danxia secret realm. The distinctly layered orange-red rock walls, marked with traces of lingering snow, stretch under the blue sky like a giant painting carved by time. There are no crowds, only the sound of wind passing through the canyon and the textures left by years on the rock walls. The mountains here come with a natural magical filter—weathered stone pillars and cliffs, each a masterpiece of nature’s craftsmanship. In late April, the collision of withered yellow meadows and unmelted snow makes this secret realm even more desolate and magnificent. ✨ Practical Tips: ▪️ Navigation: Zangbawa Town, Zhuoni (along Luoke Road, no entrance fee) ▪️ Road Conditions: Unpaved roads, SUV/hardcore off-road vehicles recommended, be cautious in rainy weather ▪️ Outfit: Earth tones/dark colors recommended for high photo success with Danxia landforms ▪️ Note: Weak signal throughout, download offline maps in advance and dress warmly

Zhagana is known by few, and those who have been there all say it is seriously underrated. I drove here from Lanzhou, taking the highway to the national road, then the provincial road, then the township road, and finally a mountain road without guardrails. Outside the car window were cliffs, and under the wheels were loose stones. The GPS completely failed, and I only found my way here with the help of locals. But the moment I stood on the mid-mountain viewing platform and looked down—I felt it was worth it for a lifetime. Zhagana is a Tibetan village hidden deep in the mountains of Diebu County, Gannan. Surrounded on all sides by rocky mountains, it wraps the small village tightly like a natural barrier. A few hundred Tibetan households live here, with stone slab roads, adobe walls, and rooftops covered with prayer flags—exactly as I imagined a Tibetan area should look, but even quieter and more pristine than I expected. I stayed at a Tibetan guesthouse at the village entrance. The owner was a middle-aged man with a dark face, not very talkative but sincerely kind. On the first evening, he told me, “You must get up early tomorrow to watch the sunrise. It will be the most beautiful morning you’ve ever seen.” I was skeptical but got up at 5 a.m. the next day and climbed to the viewing platform. It was pitch dark, and I was the only one there, wrapped in a military coat, squatting on the rocks. Then the sun rose. The sea of clouds first rose from the valley floor like a pot of boiling water, bubbling and spilling out. Then golden light smashed down from the eastern ridge, dyeing the entire sea of clouds orange-red. The prayer flags fluttered in the morning breeze, smoke began to rise from the rooftops, and standing there watching the world gradually light up felt like being cleansed inside and out by something. During the day, I wandered around the village. The Tibetans were used to outsiders like me and went about their business. An old Tibetan grandmother sat at her door soaking up the sun. I gestured and chatted with her for a long time. She was over eighty and had never left this mountain, but when she talked about the outside world, her eyes shone with light. Behind the village was a high mountain meadow full of wildflowers, where yaks and horses grazed leisurely, completely ignoring passing tourists. Zhagana’s altitude is not high, just over 2,800 meters, slightly lower than Labrang Monastery, so altitude sickness is rare. But the feeling here is unlike any other Tibetan area—no entrance fees, no forced spending, no cookie-cutter souvenir shops. There is only a village, a mountain, and a sea. When I left, I looked back at the stone mountain. It stood there just the same, neither sad nor happy. I suddenly remembered a saying: The real scenery is the place you didn’t know existed but feel indebted to after visiting. Zhagana is exactly that. 🚗 Transportation: Rent a car from Lanzhou or Xiahe Airport, or take a bus from Lanzhou to Diebu and then charter a car; about 4-5 hours on mountain roads 🎫 Tickets: Currently free (under development), recommended to go early to enjoy the free access ⏰ Time: Recommended to stay one night; sunrise in the early morning is a must-see; in the afternoon, you can hike the meadow loop for 3-4 hours 👗 Note: Large temperature difference between morning and evening, bring a thick jacket; mountain roads are winding, novice drivers should be cautious 🏨 Accommodation: Tibetan guesthouses 100-200 RMB/night, basic but authentic 🍜 Food: Home-style Tibetan dishes, tsampa, butter tea, yak meat; simple but hearty menu

The decision to go to Gannan was very sudden. Last month, I was so stressed from overtime work, still revising plans past 10 p.m. on a Friday night, when I suddenly saw photos of Zhagana posted on social media—grayish-white stone mountains, green meadows, mist swirling around, like scenes from a movie. I stared at them for a long time, then opened my phone to search for flights. Flying from Lanzhou and then driving, the whole trip would take about seven to eight hours. Since I still had a few days of annual leave left, I just took the time off. I set off early Saturday morning. On the highway from Lanzhou to Hezuo, the scenery began to change; the city’s tall buildings gradually gave way to rolling hills and grasslands. After reaching Xiahe, the road became winding, the altitude kept rising, and my ears started to feel a bit stuffy. By the time I arrived at Zhagana, it was already past 4 p.m. The car turned a corner, and suddenly the view opened up—two huge stone mountains stood like city walls, enclosing a valley in between. In the valley were green barley fields and scattered Tibetan-style houses, smoke rising from the rooftops and being blown away by the wind in midair. I was stunned. It’s hard to describe the feeling—like the scenes you see in travel documentaries suddenly appearing right before your eyes. Not on a computer screen, but real. I stayed at a guesthouse in the village run by a local Tibetan man. There was a small balcony on the second floor facing the stone mountains. After putting down my luggage, I sat on the balcony in a daze, watching clouds drift over the mountain peaks and the light gradually dim. It was very cold at night; even in May, Gannan’s nights are just a few degrees Celsius. The host made me a pot of salty butter tea. The first sip was a bit strange, but after a few sips, it felt very warming. We chatted in the living room. His Chinese wasn’t very good, and I don’t speak Tibetan, but we talked bit by bit and surprisingly enjoyed it. He asked where I was from. I said Beijing. He said Beijing was far and asked why I traveled so far. I said to see the mountains. He said, “What’s so great about mountains? I see them every day and get tired of them.” Then he laughed to himself. Early the next morning, I went hiking toward Fairy Beach. The path wasn’t difficult, just the high altitude made me short of breath after a few steps. But the scenery was amazing—wildflowers of yellow, purple, and white covered the ground, layered mountain peaks in the distance, and clouds so low it felt like you could reach out and touch them. After about an hour, I reached Fairy Beach, where the grassland opened up even more and a few horses grazed leisurely. I sat on a rock, and besides the sound of the wind and birds, there was complete silence. This kind of quietness isn’t like the silence of a city at night; it’s a silence that flows from the earth and sky, making your mind empty, just wanting to sit still. I sat there for about half an hour, then continued upward. The path became narrower with no clear signs, so I followed the small trail made by previous hikers. Halfway up, I looked back and saw the entire Tibetan village of Zhagana below—stone houses, barley fields, winding rivers—all so small they looked like models. At that moment, I suddenly felt how truly small humans are. After spending the whole day in the mountains, I returned to the village as it was getting dark. The host’s dinner was simple—tsampa and a pot of yak meat stewed with potatoes—but it tasted especially good. Maybe because I was hungry after a day of walking, or maybe because the appetite is naturally better on the plateau. On the third day, I visited Lasang Monastery, located on a hillside next to the village. The monastery was small, with red and white buildings and rows of golden prayer wheels. When I arrived, a few Tibetan women were turning the prayer wheels, shaking them in their hands and chanting prayers I couldn’t understand, walking in circles. I watched for a while and felt like they had been walking for a long time, but they were in no hurry. That slow pace of life is something you can’t experience in the city. The monks in the monastery were very young, probably in their early twenties, and spoke fluent Chinese. I asked what they usually do in the monastery. He said chanting, studying, and occasionally helping out in the village. I asked if he wanted to go out and see the world. He said he had been out but still preferred it here. I asked why. He thought for a moment and said, “Because it’s quiet here.” I was silent for a long time and didn’t ask further. On the way back, I kept thinking about that sentence: quiet. Every day we chase efficiency, speed, and more things, but what truly makes you feel good is often that quietness where you don’t have to do anything. The mountains and waters of Zhagana won’t become more beautiful because you came, nor uglier because you left. They have been there for thousands of years. When you look at them, they don’t give you surprises, but a confirmation—that such places still exist in this world, and that deep down you always know what’s important, just usually covered by too many things. Travel the world, see your true self. It’s not about how beautiful the scenery is, but that after spending time between heaven and earth, you can see your true nature. Zhagana, Gannan, Diebu County, Gansu ⏰ Recommended visit duration: 2-3 days 💰 No entrance fee, guesthouses about 100-200 RMB/night 💡 Tips: 1. Labrang Monastery — a baptism of faith in the world’s Tibetan studies academy 📿 Even before entering the monastery, I was amazed by the nearly 3.5-kilometer-long prayer wheel corridor. The copper prayer wheels sway gently under the sunlight, and the deep, resonant chanting of "Om Mani Padme Hum" fills the air. Walking clockwise with the Tibetans around the corridor is a meditation and healing for oneself! The Butter Lamp Academy is filled with the fragrance of butter flowers, and I happened upon little monks in red robes playfully chasing each other in the debate courtyard, creating a rich cultural atmosphere. Tickets cost 40 yuan, and the opening hours in summer are 08:00-18:00. It’s recommended to arrive early to the Buddha platform, where the sunlight casts a honey-colored glow on the red walls and golden roofs — truly an epic photo spot! For outfits, bright shawls or linen wide-leg pants in Tibetan red make for stunning photos. Also, try to slow down as much as possible because every turn of the prayer wheel corridor shakes out a religious soul that made me feel like I was drifting between dream and wakefulness. Zhagana — a fairyland residence fallen to earth ✨ Zhagana, rated by National Geographic as a "must-visit in a lifetime," opens its door straight to the secret stone city 🏞️. The main activity is an early morning hike on the wooden plank trail to experience the morning mist. The viewing platform’s sea of clouds hides in the cliffs, making you feel like you might be about to ride the clouds at any moment! Around 15:30-16:00 in the afternoon, it’s recommended to go to Fairy Beach wearing a bright red or white long dress to ride horses and take photos while overlooking the panoramic view of the four Tibetan villages. The altitude is about 2900-3300 meters, so there’s no severe altitude sickness. Tickets cost 80 yuan and are valid for two days. Be sure to find a good viewing platform in advance for the evening. On clear days, the evening light piercing through the stone mountains creates a huge Tyndall effect, and all you see is a golden dream! Temperatures in Zhagana can drop to around 5-10°C in the early morning and evening, so a windbreaker and a light down jacket are essential! Compared to crowded popular attractions, I prefer these gentle corners hidden in the valleys of Gannan. Here, there's no excessive commercial hustle and bustle, only red-walled Tibetan homes, white pagodas, and distant mountains, perfectly blending everyday life with a sense of faith. Zhuoni is the hometown of the Tibetan King and also the home of Taoyan inkstones. Driving slowly along the mountain roads, the Tibetan villages along the way are nestled among the rolling loess hills. The red-roofed, yellow-walled houses look exceptionally vibrant under the sun, and traces of the autumn harvest remain in the fields, like a Tibetan scroll painting slowly unfolding. Walking through the villages, white pagodas and prayer flags are visible everywhere. With a gust of wind, even the air carries a relaxed sense of storytelling. The vegetation on the mountains is distinctly layered: deep green forests, light yellow slopes, and branches laden with orange-red sea buckthorn berries. Every spot exudes a natural healing vibe. The pace here is slow, so slow that you can stop and gaze at the distant mountains for an entire afternoon, and no one will disturb you. 📍Travel Tips: · The villages are quiet and peaceful; please speak softly when taking photos and respect local customs. · For clothing, light colors and earthy tones are recommended, as they perfectly complement the Tibetan architecture and natural mountain backdrop. · More suitable for self-driving; the scenery along the way is more surprising than the destination itself, and you can stop anytime you find a favorite spot. · Zhuoni in autumn and winter has a natural warm-toned filter; the light and shadows on sunny days are particularly photogenic. It's recommended to visit in the afternoon. 🚌Transportation Reference: 1. Self-driving (most recommended) - From Lanzhou: Approximately 3.5-4 hours drive, road conditions are good, and the scenery along the way is stunning, perfect for stopping as you go. - From Hezuo City: Approximately 1 hour drive, close distance, can be combined with Zhagana and Yeliguan for a Gannan loop. 2. Public transportation - You can first arrive at Zhuoni County Bus Station, then take a taxi or chartered car to the core villages of the Hometown of the Tibetan King/Home of Taoyan Inkstones. The drive from the county town to the destination is about 20-30 minutes. - During peak season, some villages have local operating vehicles; it is recommended to book in advance. Niche and healing, with no cookie-cutter photo spots, only the most authentic cultural landscapes of Tibet. This is the gentle way to experience Gannan.
