It started with a slow January day, a bored scroll through Instagram, and a place I'd never heard of before. Dovestone Reservoir. Something about it just felt right — so the next morning, I packed my bag, told no one, and left. Dovestone is a stunning reservoir nestled in the Peak District, just outside Manchester in Greenfield, Saddleworth. The moment the 83 bus drops the city behind you and the hills start to take over, you already know this is going to be different. The landscapes open up in a way that genuinely surprises you — it's only an hour from Piccadilly, but it feels like another world entirely. I walked with no map and no route. Just the reservoir stretching ahead, cold air, and the kind of quiet that actually lets you think. Halfway through, I found a single glove on the path. Picked it up. It kept one hand warm the whole way — sometimes travel gives you exactly what you need, just not in the way you expected. The people you meet here are what make it memorable. I helped a university student work through a genuine fear of heights on a steep section of the trail. Later, I missed my last bus back — and the two strangers I'd been walking with didn't hesitate to offer me a lift all the way back to Manchester. In their BMW. Take a 22-minute train from Manchester Piccadilly Station to Greenfield, where there is a large Tesco for ample supplies. After stocking up, walk about 40 minutes to 📍Dovestone Reservoir and Chew Reservoir circular route. AllTrails data shows 13.5 km with 442m elevation gain. The weather was bad, but since we were already there, we set out from Greenfield with umbrellas. Later, we gave up the umbrellas and let the cold sleet soak us through. We climbed counterclockwise along the road, then turned onto hillside meadows, which surprisingly were quite easy to walk on and not muddy. At 14:40, the sky gradually cleared and the rain and snow stopped just as we were heading down. We chose the fastest route down (red on map 18). The whole trip took 5 hours. The beauty of the Peak District is not striking; the hills and highlands surround several reservoirs, creating a relatively harmonious and beautiful scene. But at first glance, it surprisingly resembles the Scottish Highlands. Hiking in the rain has its own unique charm.
