Flights from Singapore typically cost more than S$800 return, accommodation choices are still relatively limited compared with established Southeast Asian destinations, and tourism services are continuing to develop. Tourism isn’t created by beautiful scenery alone. Airlines create connectivity. Hotels create capacity. Tour operators create convenience. Together, they create demand. I genuinely believe Timor-Leste has enormous tourism potential. If air connectivity improves, more accommodation options become available and the tourism ecosystem continues to mature, I can see many more Singapore travellers adding it to their bucket list. I went to see the Christ the Redeemer statue in Timor-Leste, a small island nation in Southeast Asia. Timor-Leste's Cristo Rei is the second largest statue in the world after the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sadly, Japan is not depicted on the globe under the statue. The day we made our way to Cristo Rei was one of excitement, because this was the highlight of our Timor-Leste expedition! Along the coastal road to Cristo Rei, we spotted an erection that served as a reminder of Timor-Leste’s political struggles, which reminded us of our own impending uphill task - ascending some 598 steps to the summit of Cristo Rei Hill! Midway up the climb, I got distracted by a stairway leading down to the emerald waters of a very enticing beach… But the climb must continue! About 30 steps to the summit, we were greeted by a panoramic view of both sides of the peninsula, with the coasts facing opposite directions visible all at once! And then… THERE IT WAS! The statue of Cristo Rei! It might be just a fraction of the size of Rio de Janerio’s Christ the Redeemer, but it was regal nonetheless. Cue majesty music! Caught an awe-inspiring sunset from the top of the hill as a bonus.
